Rushing the Court

Submitted by Bryan on
I'm not sure how I feel about rushing the court after the win. Sure, UConn is a good team at number 15, but it makes us look like a mid-major doing that with the students holding up one finger. Am I the only one that feels this way? EDIT: Someone types faster than I. damn

..but moments like this, with a bunch of elated students celebrating on their home floor, is what college athletics is all about. I got chills seeing all of those maize shirts on the floor.

I'm a student. We already know how to have a good time. Rushing the court after beating the # 15 team makes me scared about what we will do if we beat MSU. Let's say we rush the court after beating MSU, and rush the court.... they would make fun of us for a year. and they would have a legitimate argument. If you allow students to rush the court against the # 15 team, where do we draw the line? What are our standards? When I grew up, it was rush the court when beating the #1 or 2 team... maybe.... Let's not give them the satisfaction that Michigan sports has changed at all. We should still be thinking that we are # 1.

In answer to your implied question:
We should still be thinking that we are # 1.
maybe I need to reconsider the state of Michigan athletics.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. What is the point of pretending, because that's all it is, that we are a dominant world superpower in basketball (or even football, at least for the time being)?

"It's a good win. Not sure if it warrants rushing the court." "That doesn't seem to matter these days." "....eh. Whatever." Cut to commercial.

if i recall correctly, osu was ranked around 15 or so two weekends ago, and there was no court rushing after that game...

OSU wasn't the #15 team w/out Evan Turner. That was clearly an inflated ranking, and with him back they will probably be every bit of the #15 team in the country. I am glad we were able to get one without him, as I am sure the rematch will not be an easy one.

UConn wasn't as good as #15 either, they had lost twice before today after their ranking came out. Even if they'd won today they still wouldn't have been ranked come tomorrow. That being said, I was kinda surprised that we did rush the court, but at least we did it well. I would have done it if I was there. Let the students do what they want to do.

UConn came in with a losing streak...they may have technically been the #15 team for a few more hours, but they certainly were not playing like the #15 team. Heck KenPom even had us as 1 point favorites so I would only call it a very mild upset. I thought it was amateurish to rush the court as well. There are plenty of other ways to celebrate that are less embarrassing. Not a big deal either way, I just would not have done it.

No, the win didn't warrant rushing the court, but I feel like it might've looked good for all the football recruits there to see such a good atmosphere at Crisler. As a general note, anyone doubting DG's commitment should know he was sitting right next to Rich Rod and his wife the entire game, and when the recruits left at half to tour the Big House or something, DG stayed behind alone and just watched.

Some people like to say "act like you've been there before" when criticizing players celebrating TDs in football. Makes sense. But what if you "haven't been there" before? Celebrating must be okay in those scenarios, right? I like applying similar logic to rushing the court. The unfortunate fact is that this Michigan team (and students for that matter) hasn't really "been there" that often. Victories over ranked teams at home are not a regular occurrence, so I think we need to give them some leeway. It's a borderline call, but not a major deal IMO.

I really wasn't expecting anyone to rush the court and was surprised, but everyone was just caught up in the moment and it was nice to get a good non-conference win. We should've rushed the court when Brandon Graham was acknowledged for the Big Ten MVP award. He looked excited to receive it, and there's no player more deserving.

As an old-time alum who has attended a lot of Bball games, I thought that it was great to see the students rush the court. The atmosphere was electric in the first half and then wained in the first seven minutes of the second half after UConn tied it up. The last five minutes were nail-biter minutes. So I give the fans, the students, the band and the players HUGE kudos for staying active at the end of the game. I felt completely comfortable watching the students storm the court after the win! Great job by the players and Great job by the Maize-Rage!!! Go Blue.

how poor our OOC record is, this was a huge win for this team and can possibly be the spark that can turn the season around. So I thought it was cool that they rushed the court. Go Blue!

Yeah it probably didn't merit it, but whatever. Did the team have fun? Yes. Did the students have fun? Yes. Enough for me. Go on - rush that court. Recruits seeing Michigan fans going nuts and embracing a team probably didn't hurt either.

Seven more fellas. BTW if anyone reading this will be in the maize rage a week from Tuesday I will personally purchase and smuggle in ski masks for every one of you in attendance. And you had better be wearing them when you charge the court. Or you can throw them at noisy state fans. Whatever burns your boat.

Rushing the court or the field is just getting old and stupid. If you want to celebrate with your friends, you're already next to them in the stands. If you want to congratulate the team for THEIR victory, then when you rush the court or field, go up to them and congratulate them in a respectful, safe manner. Don't jump on them, and don't heckle the opposite team (especially well conditioned, muscular athletes who are over 6 ft and over 200 lbs - not smart). Rushing the field is about a bunch of idiots you think they somehow are involved in the victory (you weren't) and getting this face on Sportcenter or CBS or ABC or whatever. Look at how many of the kids were running for the camera at the end of the broadcast. I personally liked Lundquist and Kellogg's take on the rushing of the court. Subtle slap at Michigan. My gosh, we have actually won a national title in basketball and finished runner up three times (though vacating two of them). It's not like where Northwestern who has never made the NCAA tournament.

This statement is idiotic. Any good fan is involved in the game in some way. Fan support and cheering can serve as a great motivator for some players. If you were at the game and you saw Brandom Graham when he accepted his award, he had the biggest smile on his face as he held up the trophy and ran towards the student section. How into these games would these players be without our support? Rushing the court was not about beating the #15 team in the country (and not even really #15 considering recent losses). This was about a struggling team making some big plays down the stretch to get a solid non-conference win. I'm 2 years out of school and was sitting in the gold section up top. A part of me really wanted to go down with the students and just be a part of the experience. Not everyone wants to get on TV - some people were just caught in the moment. I was initially surprised when I saw people rushing the court, but actually being at the game makes you understand it more. You see other teams do it "when they're not supposed to", but who the hell cares. Indiana rushed the court that same night when they beat Minnesota in OT not because they beat one of the best in the nation, but because they love and support their team, just like us.
