RR's Yost Test Today

Submitted by mabrsu on
I think there is a big test today for Rich Rod. If everything had been going great and we were 7-2 as opposed to 2-7, I think there would still be  grumblings amongst the donors and fanbase. The question that RR is not one of our own still exists. Does he have the same values and appreciation for our tradition? Is it just about winged helmets and the big house to him or does he appreciate our entire tradition? Today is the Monday Press Conference the week of the Minnesota game. I hope everyone remembers how Lloyd was at this press conference. He loved telling the story of the Jug. The question is how will RR do today? Does he know the story? When did he first hear about it? Does he even know who Fielding H Yost is because he hasn't said his name once.  It is always Bo, winged helmets, and big house. Will he pass the Fielding H Yost test? It matters to me to show how much he has embraced our program as his own.

Dude, he hasn't been here that long. He might not know everything yet, but he'll pick it up. I'm sure he's more concerned with his team right now given that he has bigger issues than Lloyd ever really did.

Also, these arbitrary tests of a new coach really just annoy me. So what if he doesn't say certain things? Doesn't mean he doesn't know about it. Just means he doesn't conduct things like Lloyd, who knew?

I actually like RR and I think he will do great things here if given the chance. I just think other people like big time boosters may be thinking these things. I also want to know if he knows the history. I love Michigan football for more than just Saturdays. The history is so cool and interesting, so I am wondering if RR has taken the time to learn these things. It doesn't have to be so black and white. I would like him more so though if I heard him wax poetically about it. I am sure he has been coached up by the athletic department press secretary. I won't like him less if he doesn't say anything about it. I meant to say earlier how much has he embraced our tradition and history as his own.

I spent the first 22 years of my life in Michigan, am a life-long Michigan fan, graduated from the university, and I barely know the history of the Little Brown Jug or anything about Fielding H. Yost.

I hope he talks about how to prevent turnovers against one of the nations leaders in TO margin.  I hope he talks about the health of Threet and if Zirbel is back by the end of the season.  I hope he talks about the current team.  Fuck some old-ass water bucket that is relevant to a bunch of "yeah sure ya betcha" hillbillies who eat fish soaked in vinegar.  RR is not LC.  He is not poetic, he is a coach.  So what if he does or doesn't know much about Yost, is Yost giving him schematic advise?  Fuck boosters, if they want to send this program into a shitstorm by getting RR fired, the egg will be on their face.  Minnesota may be better than us this year, but when is the last time they were relavent?  1943?

I am going to quote dex on this one:

"I hope RR walks into the press conference and pisses in the LBJ"

Is that they just paid $4M to get RR out of his old contract and they'd really like to see some return on that investment. Like you, I could care less about the jug story, but the boosters (and not well-informed message board fans like you, and, I like to think, me) drive decision-making.

Until we on the intertubes make like Obama and devlop a monstrous war chest of out of small donations and effectively vote as a bloc with that money (a sort of counter Victors club...is that even possible?), other voices will have the ears of the UM administration.

Big money boosters might wear funny pants  to games and to prefer the high floor/low ceiling teams of the Schembechler school, but they also write the checks and call the shots.

I heard RR failed miserably at the LBJ test. supposedly the seniors had to sit down the coaches and tell them the story, and they weren't even that interested in hearing about it. Lloyd used to sit the team around and explain them the story every year. I think this is just one example of a loss of tradition. We lose the history that separatees us from texas, fsu, etc.

Sure, i'd like to keep up all the great traditions we have even including this one which I think is mostly overrated.  However, how was he supposed to know the story of LBJ?  Now that the seniors told everyone the story, he will know about it in the future.  He is learning about the traditions of Michigan and I haven't seen much evidence of any that he has learned about and intentionally disregarded.

Wouldn't you rather have him spend his time trying to teach players about the offense, than do his own research into all the traditions.  He'll learn the traditions over this year.  Sure it makes for bad stories during this transition year, but we'll see how it goes next year.

He only showed up and chastised his assistants for laughing at the "hook Fielding Yost hung his gear on."

RR says the bare minimum of what he has to say about "Michigan's great tradition," and that's it.  No more, no less.  He only says it because he has to.  And does he fall short every time?  Yep.  Should it matter?  No.  But it does.
