Roster currently at 87

As we blend the 2009 roster (minus B. Smith / Graduates / Cone / Cissoko) with the 2010 incoming freshman (at 26) we have a current "roster" of 87.

The necessary attrition will come from either walk-on players that were on scholarship in 2009 (Kovacs and Leach) and/or 5th year seniors not retained by the staff (Sheridan, Patterson, Wright, Moundros).

Obviously, Ezeh, Mouton, Ferera, Schilling, Banks, and Dorrestein are coming back for the their 5th years andn will be retained.

So, with signing day approaching, and looking at the current roster... Do we want more than 1 more commitment (Parker or Knight or an OL, etc.) at the sacrifice of not giving scholarships to (currently) 2 and possibly more of the six mentioned above?

EDIT: This does not take into account any future transfers as none are known at this time (although you can assume at least 1 will happen before or after spring ball).

EDIT: Still at 87 without counting Cissoko

Also, the number 26 is based on last years schollie count, as you can only back date recruits if you were under the 85 schollie limit for the previous year. Someone said we had 84 schollies last year which means we can only back date one EE to last years class so the 26 total number this year will not change.

Having said that, I am unsure if that 84 number is accurate.

There are 48 non-fifth year, scholarship players returning, 49 if you count Kovaks and 50 if you count Leach too (for the sake of argument, let's count both). These are the players eligible for a fifth year:
Sheridan
Cone
Schilling
Dorrestein
Ferrara
Banks
Patterson
Ezeh
Mouton
Wright

Say we only say goodbye to Sheridan, Cone and Wright. That puts us at 57. We currently have 26 commits. 57+26=83.

The issue, according to the guys on the premium sites is that we had 84 guys (including walkons) on scholarship last year which means we can only sign one guy from this year's class back to last year. So we are limited to enrolling 26 guys from this class.

You left out Moundros (former walk-on that's been on schollarship for the last two years); and Cone walked with the seniors at OSU game (and he was not included in the 87).

So, your 83 (after adding Moundros and not considering Cone as part of my 87) is actually 85. Math is right.

First off walk on scholarships are year to year with no guarantee of being renewed. Of those who signed LOIs there were 77 to start the year and that number was down to 71 (7 left + Kelvin Grady)before B. Smith left and DW declared leaving 69 minus the seniors which would cut it to 57 including all fifth years. Add in 26 recruits and I come up with 83.

Early enrollees do not count toward the 84 guys we had on scholarship in 2009. Scholarships are done by calendar year, so we have 59 remaining scholarship players for 2010, plus 7 early enrollees (that's 66 total), and now we can bring in 19 more guys for the fall.

Early enrollees count toward their graduating class year (2010) so don't worry about them.
