Rivals Mod: No Truth to GERG rumors

Submitted by pz on

This is Misopogon - I'm leaving this board post up in case anyone comes hearing a rumor about Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Robinson and a resignation. A rumor was posted on a Rivals board, and a moderator refuted it. At the moment, it seems like someobody made something up, and then someone else with information called it ridiculous. Michigan's defensive coordinator is Greg Robinson, and there is zero information, credible or otherwise, suggesting otherwise. Carry on.

Original post:

That's it and that's all.

2 separate people have said it, though sourcing is unclear at this point, so it could be false / someone screwing around.. Have to say that I think if he did resign it would be the best move for both parties at this time.

My apologies if I'm just making a bad joke worse, but it is Halloween after all. Mods - feel free to take this down if you've got info to the contrary or think that it is just BS.

UPDATE: One of the guys has now backed off, saying it isn't a done deal. Seems fishy...

UPDATE 2: Now a Mod has refuted. Go back to thinking whatever it was that you were thinking before this happened.

Good options:
1. Casteel: no staff changes
2. Other DC: must get to choose his staff

Bad option:
1. New DC no control over defense/assistants=gerg/Schafer all over again and we are done.

especially the part about not picking your own staff, or at least having some say in its formation. this will be the second DC falling on a sword for this bunch.

Im waiting until ap ress conference (fat chance if GERG wouldnt even talk to the press after games), or a press release confirms it. And I wouldn't celebrate anyways. The only thing that'd really get me to celebrate is reading "Tony Gibson Resigns".

No sarcasm, great title. A lot of times people would title this Greg Robinson resigns or something of that nature, seriously good title. Plus 1. On another note, I am not sad about if this true.

My buddy summed it up thusly: "Changing defensive coordinators is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic." Have to agree. Doesn't matter who coaches this defense right now. The talent, experience and depth simply aren't there.

My buddy sent me a text with this rumor/inside info and signed off with that same phrase. That's the second time I've heard it since 4pm today. Either we have the same buddy, or that phrase is making a serious comeback...

Hey I've got an idea: since I have internet access I think I'm going to make something up and post it on the internet so I can fantasize what people's reaction to it will be when they read it at home. It will be really fun.

and we DO change DC's....we still have undersized...undertalented underclassmen all over the defense.

How can any reasonably intelligent football fan really believe a COACH will somehow make any appreciable difference?

We need better talent and more size and LOTS more experience.

I have no personal affinity for GR....but i hate to see any coach lose his job and get blamed for things he simply has very little control over.

Greg....you did the best with what you had. I hope you land on your feet somewhere.

I can't count the number of times Robinson has mentioned that he teaches his players to go for turnovers. All the time, you see players go for the ball rather than wrap up the defender. That falls on the coach.

When you can't find a way to get pressure on a walk - on first start QB to let him make bad decisions, well...at least part of it is on the coach.

I'm sure GERG is a nice guy, and I'm sure he's been placed in a tough situation, but I do not consider him one of the ELITE DCs in the country. There is plenty of room for an upgrade.

is doing what he can with little to no talent (except Martin). my main beef with him is he gives opposing teams little to no rush, which gives others teams qbs tons of time to exploit are young and inexperienced secondary! i would like to see more blitzes along with moving to more of a 4-2-5 scheme with roh as a full time DE. Lets hope we see some progress in the defense next week or it wont be pretty.

As much as I like getting turnovers, I much prefer a solid tackle for a short gain. It's way past time for a change, I'm just not sure what good it will do at this point. If RR sticks around next year, Casteel and who he wants to help coach the D might be a good option. Whoever gets the DC job, if it is in fact open now or later, should be able to pick who he wants as assistants and run the scheme he knows best that can help this program turn things around.

I can't remember feeling as helpless and weak as a Michigan fan then Royster's 4 and 1 in the second quarter. He carried half of our defense forward after we knocked him back a full yard.

We're so soft. We're young too. But we're soft. Whatever can be done to not be that anymore, make it happen.

In a perfect world we hire a defensive-minded head coach who overpays Calvin McGee and Barwis to stay on for the first couple of years.

If/when he does resign do you think GREG holds a press conference? I think he will leave it up to the AD to announce it and continue his streak of never facing the media.

Take it for what its worth....I was formerly BILG until you all Neg bombed the crap out of me for being critical of the defense's progression. Anyways, if you remember me, I used to have a friend in the AD who leaked some info on the coaching change and I posted it here. That was about how Miles was offered the job and was going to accept.....This was before Herbstreit and ESPN blew up the story and shit hit the fan. Then he leaked RR to me, but I was too afraid to post....so I just said it might be a Big East coach...and everyone assumed it was Schiano.....Anyways, this is just to try to reestablish some credibility here.....

My friend no longer works at the AD so I dont have direct inside info. However, he is still very close with people in the facilities and there is no truth to a GERG resignation being ACCEPTED. However, after the game last night, there were supposedly heated conversations in which GERG basically said...WTF you want me to do....resign, OK, I will resign. RR supposedely coaxed him not to and it was just a situation of total frustration after the game. I don't think this is really a story. I think it was just heat of the moment bs that goes on after a disappointing loss. How serious GERG was, I have no idea. How valuable or valid this info is, I also have no idea.....Just relaying the limited info I have.

1) If Gary Moeller is coming in, UNDER ANY CAPACITY, then the job security of Coach Rodriguez and his entire staff is in real, imminent danger, and are all but gone after the season. At this point I find it hard to believe that a move like this would occur.

2) RE: Defense. Is it just coaching, scheme, talent, youth, or size? The answer is yes. All of the above. There is very little pressure on quarterbacks outside of Martin, very few sacks, and it's been so long that I'm not sure the defense understands the concept of "turnover" anymore. If Mike Martin goes down for good and can't go against Wisconsin or Ohio State, this defense is fucked, seven ways 'til Sunday. The possibility of us giving up 50 in each contest is very, very real without him. I don't even want to contemplate what this place (and the Michigan fanbase in general) is going to be like if this comes to pass.

3) I said this last night, but I'll say it again. I have absolutely no confidence in this defense under nearly any down and distance combination, and at this point, against any opponent. Pick any team on our schedule. Do you feel confident that this defense can get a stop on 3rd and 6, at any point in the game, and from anywhere on the field that you choose? Sadly, I do not.

4) This loss really shook my faith in Coach Rodriguez. I was patient the first year, and slightly less so last season, but I did see enough progress to sit back and say "okay, things will continue to improve". When we lost to MSU and Iowa earlier this season, I thought, "well, this year will be different. We've got more talent on offense and surely we can get past PSU, Illinois and Purdue and get to 7 wins". I'm not sure there's one more win for us, let alone two. I've got really serious questions and reservations now. I can understand getting beat, but not in the manner in which we saw and heard last night.

the performance on saturday, i'm done... i've been very patient with this staff and have defended them every step of the way, but when you can't beat a penn st. team that is starting a walk on at QB and has proved all year long that that they can't move the ball on O there is a huge problem... i would really like to know what went on over the last 2 weeks in practice that caused them to come out unprepared? RR says every week on his show that they want to work on fundamentals with the team and ESPECIALLY with the younger players... the defense has regressed again for the 2nd year, not that that they have been great all year long but when they can't get off of the field repeatedly on 3 and long there is major problem... as said above the O isn't doing anything new at all... we can't run the ball worth a shit, unless denard does it... through out fall camp all we heard about is how good our RB's are going to be, well where the hell is it??? for the last 2 weeks all i had was flash backs to the 2008 purdue game, everyone remembers that game... people were getting there hopes up that this would be the easiest win of the year, and i kept thinking to myself this is to much like purdue of 08... well guess what a walk on QB had his justin siller moment and as fan were left scratching our heads and wondering what the fuck just happened...

always be a Michigan fan forever, it was born into me... but i've had enough of games where our defense comes out and shits the bed... i've taken all of the info that has been provided on this site in the last 3 years and tried to explain it to people... i'm just tired of defending the coaches and expaining to irrational michigan fans about what is really going on... something needs to be done period and if you can't admit to that then you are lying to yourself...

Football coaches are seldom fired or hired mid-season. (Minnesota’s Tim Brewster was the very rare exception.) Anyone whom you’d want as GERG’s replacement is probably employed elsewhere, and won’t be available till the end of the season. Firing GERG now wouldn’t improve the Michigan defense for the next four games. It would just insert drama into a situation where it isn’t needed.

Soooooo... what's happenin'?

Look, I was cussing and throwing remote controls like most of you on Saturday night, but I keep coming back to one thing and that is how productive the offense is. It's prolific, and it's prolific with a lot of youth. That's something. I think Denard and the offense is probably enough for Rodriguez to keep his job.

So, offense = good thing.

Defensively, YIKES. Some changes are going to need to be made. Yeah, I get that there are players out there that shouldn't be. I get that there has been some bad luck. I get all that.

Having said all that.... when you're going up against a team trotting out a walk on QB who's taken exactly TWO snaps in his collegiate career, you have to expect a certain type of offense. You have to anticipate a lot of short passes, screens and draws. If the players on the field are THAT BAD that Robinson properly prepared them and they STILL didn't execute properly, then I'm at a loss. I just cannot believe that they're not that intelligent or have that poor football instincts. I'm sure this year has been difficult on Greg Robinson, but there have been more than a handful of situations where I questioned the defensive playcalling and set up. "Oh, Craig Roh's a linebacker." Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, no he's not and it's pretty obvious.

I really hope that the defense shows some form of progress this year, but frankly I don't really expect them to attributable to both the defensive coordinator and the lack of talent on the field. I have never seen such consistently bad tackling in my life. That's coaching. Those are basics. And what we've seen this year has been unacceptable for pretty much any Division 1 program.

Defense = REALLY bad thing.

Now the way I see it is that RRod is not a D-guy. The offense has been pretty damn good for the past 2 years, and its underscored by the fact they are almost always trying to come from behind. I haven't heard anything about GERG's demotion or firing, (i'm working on it) nor anything about Moeller.

RRod will get atleast one more year, but I'd be very surprised if there is no change at DC between now and next season.

below is me just thinking outloud on some potential replacements:

Dick Bumpas (TCU)

Willie Martinez (former UGA d coordinator)

Bill Stewart?

it's going to be a big name, or a urban myer type up-and-comer.
