A Reminder That Should Not Be Needed - DO NOT Attack Recruits

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Judging by people's reactions to this thread, I feel like I should clarify a couple things:

1) I believe that Michigan fans are by and large less moronic than other fans (I'm a relatively recent convert and, from my experience, we have one of the better fan bases).

2) This isn't about wanting Weber. I think he's a fine athlete, but I am very happy with Higdon...especially after reading MichiganMan14's wonderful post.

3) Weber's Mom is probably overreacting, though at the same time this is her kid and no parent wants their kid attacked -- online or otherwise.

Let me preface this by saying that this critique is not directed toward MGoBlog users. During my time on this Board, I have gotten the distinct impression that the people who post here are by and large intelligent, reasonable fans.

That said, just like any other fan base, we have our complete MORANS. Don't let this be you!

The upshot of the article is that Michigan fans have been attacking Weber, leading his mother to have a very negative opinion of the Michigan fanbase. If the LOI wasn't the final blow to the chances of Weber wearing the Maize and Blue, then everything that seems to have happened since then was.

DO NOT ATTACK 17 AND 18 YEAR OLD KIDS!!!!

I got negged indirectly due to my response from being so suck of the same sob sisters/nerds who cannot see the betrayal by the "lifelong" fan who commits to the enemy at our greatest time of need, and instead say like losers "oh, good luck mister weber" as if they knew him.

You didn't get "negged indirectly." You're a melodramatic asshole with a head the size of Nebraska and an IQ no bigger than my shoe size. You made a very poor choice in directly attacking a high school kid like he killed your dog. Get over yourself and give it a rest, guy with no friends.

OK, if you're a U of M College of Engineering graduate, how come you don't know you have a BSE in Mechanical Engineering and not a BS?

Far from conclusive proof that you're an impostor, but an actual graduate from the College of Engineering would know that.

My only point is who are you going to get through too...this isn't a novel idea. If a person is going to be an A-hole, than they are going to be an A-hole. Every school has A-holes, especially schools who take sports way to freaking seriously

If you are from Michigan and you go to Ohio you can suspect some shit talking from people. That is always going to come with a rivalry, but if there was racial crap being said or attacking him to the point where you cross the line then that needs to stop.

Yes, there are a lot of morons on social media.  That's a fact.  But it's impossible to re-raise all of them from childhood not to be morons.

If you don't like people who are admittedly morons commenting on your business, keep it private to yourself and off of social media.

You can't have it both ways . . . the attention and fawning you get from social media when you want it, but not the negative attention from trolls when you don't.

He tweeted that her punctuation and spelling were bad. She was just posting how upset she was with Michigan fans for tweeting negative stuff to her son.

This social media thing has created a monster of negativity. People text and tweet things they wouldn't have the guts to say to someone's face. It's ridiculous. And on top of that to correct someone's punctuation or spelling is so childish. People need to grow up and get a life. Just horrible how people act on Twitter.

it is ridiculous.  unfortunately all institutions have normal fans and creeps.

social medias great for scores of respectable, decent people looking to network, maintain / build relationships, conduct business, etc, but its awful at same time bc theres just as many clowns and immature fools who should be muzzled.

whether posters believe comments to be positive or negative, why bother, why communicate in any form with totally foreign recruits?  theres a blog full of somewhat similar people to converse with and debate mich sports - why directly involve unknown recruits / players?

18 yr old sports-crazed frosh or 50 yr old bored alum - unless you have curves and are looking to date athletes, they most likely do not care or want to know you so just say / type nothing at all.

and only pretentious michigan fans would be douchey enough to knock someones punctuation or grammar - especially in that context, wow

Of course, but the mom is in the wrong here. All fan bases have this, and you can bet there are plenty of MSU and OSU fans posing as Michigan fans wanting to make us look bad.

If the noise bothers her she can turn it off. It really is that simple.

Well I doubt that she paid much attention to recruits and social media. So I don't think she was really in the know on what could happen if her son committed to OSU? And I think Mike had a lot other things on his mind then to tell his mother to be prepared for the worse. That being said I am sorry. But grown men following recruits and even worse tweeting them is just pathetic. Is it really that "cool" to see what some 17 year old kid from Tampa who has a Michigan hat is thinking? Stuff is kinda lame to me.

She doesn't care that all fan bases are apparently filled with douches.  She just cares about the ones she has read.  You talk about someone's child to a parent's face the way some (on the internets) have talked about Weber, it would get ugly fast.

Didn't he also catch alot of crap from Buckeye fans when he decided to listen to Coach Harbaugh?  It sucks that the idiots are usually the loudest.  Just imagine the stuff she would have read if he had come to Michigan.

It sucks that the idiots are usually the loudest.
Actually, I think it's more complex than that because most intelligent, reasonable fans probably know better than to stalk / Tweet high school recruits in the first place. Hence, comments on Twitter / Facebook will always skew to the trolls. Also, I think it's human nature to remember or obsess over the negative stuff regardless. Weber could get 95 positive comments out of every 100 and he or his parents would still single out the 5 that were negative.

However, in this day and age if you are going to participate in social media and put yourself in the spotlight, you might need thicker skin. I'm sure they love all the comments about how great he is but with that is going to come the opposite.

Maybe Mike has but in general if you're going to be involved in social media you have to understand these things will happen. He was tweeting about how hard the decision was and other things. You can disagree but it's fact you have to have thick skin if you're going to participate in social media.
