Redshirting QBs strategy
Now that we've blown Gardners redshirt (yeah i know this fact has been discussed plenty so thats all im gonna say about it), I think this is the smartest course of action going forward:
Note: I dont think this strategy will actually be employed
2011:
Starter: Denard (Jr)
Backup: Tate (Jr)
Redshirt: Gardner (RS Fr)
2012
Starter: Denard (Sr)
Backup: Gardner (RS Soph)
Redshirt: Tate (RS Jr)
2013:
Starter: Tate (RS Sr) or Gardner (RS Jr)
2014:
Starter: Gardner (RS Sr)
Backup: Sousa (RS Jr) or other
This would give us veteran starters and backups for the next 4 seasons.

If Gardner was second string over Tate at the beginning of this year, what makes you think that he's going to take a year redshirting and then come in and start over Gardner?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:29 PM ^
i personally dont think he ever was the second string qb. i think it was all a dumb ploy by RR to make a statement to Tate. But regardless, i think it would be extremely short sighted to not have Gardner redshirt, and leave him only one yr of eligibility after Denard's SR season.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:34 PM ^
Regardless of whether Tate was ahead of Devin, do you think the players would go for an "I'll redshirt now, you redshirt next year" type situation?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
well in this situation, it is what gives the players the best chance to eventually start. If tate doesnt redshirt, his being the starter requires that he beats out Denard (or Denard gets injured or leaves early). Gardner would have an incentive to redshirt, to give him an extra yr to compete as starter.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:49 PM ^
Gardner will get at least a year either way. I could see the coaches asking him to redshirt next year and getting two years of starting out of him, but I don't see any reason to redshirt Tate in that scenario. I'd rather have Gardner start in both his junior and senior years than breaking up our continuity by switching from Robinson to Tate to Gardner in successive years.

Can you redshirt after your freshman year?
Has anyone actually done this?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:35 PM ^
You have 5 years to play 4. Doesn't matter what year you use your redshirt.
For example- Woolfolk, Troy.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
isn't that a medical redshirt?
October 15th, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
Medical Redshirt can spring a 6th year, sometimes. Beamer loves red-shirting-at-will. He tried to red shirt Tyrod Taylor like 3 time.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:39 PM ^
No, a medical redshirt is for playing a couple games, then suffering a season ending injury. He is taking the redshirt for medical reasons, yes, but it is not technically a medical redshirt.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
It could be either I believe, but you apply for a medical redshirt after the season is over.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
It's a regular redshirt. He isn't going to play all season. The NCAA does not care why he's missing the season. As long as he never plays, he automatically is credited with a redshirt and becomes eligible in 2011.
Medical redshirts are a separate case. They come up when a player suffers an injury that does not allow him to play after the fourth game of the season. They must be applied for and approved by the NCAA.

This is all kinds of dumb.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:33 PM ^
Guys dont redshirt when they are soph's and junior's. Maybe in your NCAA 2011 Dynasty you do that, but not in real life.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:40 PM ^
Tyrod Taylor was inteded to red shirt his sophmore year, but they needed him.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
Way to know the rules. This reads like a youtube comment.
October 15th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
yes in most cases they don't redshirt after freshman year . but in some cases and this might be another they do . Look up Kirby Moore for boise he is doing it this year as a sophmore and he actually played every game as a freshman and did pretty good . It isn't liekly but if we can get DG for one more year it would be nice and if DG is smart and all in for michigan he will see this is the smartest thing to do in the long run for michigan and himself .
October 15th, 2010 at 7:07 PM ^
My gosh, how could the coaches be so dumb if they don't?! With superior abilities to know what's best for the program moreso than the coaches who work with the team every single day, you sir should immediately be the number one candidate to take over the HC position should RR not work out. You have my vote.
No sarcasm, just being crazy, it's been a long week. I actually wish he would take a RS year, too.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
But I love this idea. Remember Va Tech was going to do this with Tyrod Taylor (on his request) but then they ended up being incompetent on offense without him.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
I would not rule out the possibility that Gardner becomes "injured" at some point this season and we apply for a medical shirt for him.

Please make it stop. Speculation all the way to 2014 about the back up QB???
I appreciate passion and football fanaticism. But damn. There are way to many variables to even play this speculation game.
I know the Denard bandwagon is very full, but how many people really thought (not hoped) he would be the starter.
Hell if our offense gets some more pieces in place and the coaches can open up additional aspects we will attract some very special QB recruits. There is just as good of a chance that the 2014 names are guys most of us haven't heard of yet.

Wow such an important opinion you had to post three times. I think we got it the first time.
/s
But I definitely agree with you. I posted something similar in the thread about the 2012 starters. There is too much time left between now and then for new recruits to come in and change the outlook of the team. Who knows DG could start next year, you never know.

Stop doing this. This is beyond obnoxious. If you dislike the thread, give it a downvote and move on.

Can't he redshirt this season, provided he doesn't play any more? He's only seen the field briefly, and all in non-conference games. Pretty sure it's something like, if he plays less than 25% of the season (NCAA rule) and not in any conference games (Big Ten rule), he can redshirt.
Am I mistaken?
October 15th, 2010 at 5:42 PM ^
Yes, if we can find some medical explanation as to why he didn't play, and the NCAA approves of it. Otherwise, no.
October 15th, 2010 at 5:48 PM ^
Thanks. I wonder if "youth" is an acceptable medical condition. It certainly has significant comorbidities
October 15th, 2010 at 5:50 PM ^
Probably not, but the NCAA's standards aren't that high. Guys have gotten medical redshirts for things like broken fingers before.

October 15th, 2010 at 6:40 PM ^
I think we can safely rule out Denard switching positions.
October 15th, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
I assume if one of the QB's doesn't play for a full year (for whatever reason) they'll take a redshirt that year. You don't have to declare that a player is redshirting at the begining of the year for him to get one. At least that's my understanding. So if Devin is third string next year and never gets into a game (possible), he'd redshirt.
