Recruiting director Matt Dudek responds to Twitter trolls...

Submitted by fharajli on

So there is a small, but growing faction of people, who have been voicing their displeasure and concern about the '18 class. They claim that we are getting left in the dust in comparison to OSU's recruiting. When you look at the recruiting rankings and the classes OSU has coming in over the next few years, that may be true. That frustration boiled over in a heated Twitter exchange with recruiting director Matt Dudek. Looks like the trolls have finally gotten to him.

Personally, I'm not a star gazer or one who puts tremendous stock in recruiting rankings, but there are many in the fanbase that do. True, there is a stark difference in talent that OSU has in the '18 class and what Michigan is getting star-wise. I think it's just a result of some misses on our end and a bad season and I think the '19 class will be as good as any and there's no reason to worry.

For those out there that are worried about the '18 class or the disparity in apparent talent that OSU is bringing in and what Michigan is bringing in, can you explain the rationale of why you're freaking out over one average class?

No comment on Dudek, but Harbaugh was decent (not exceptional) QB play and we beat OSU. By all accounts, we will have this over the next few years. Harbaugh didn’t win at Stanford by out recruiting, he won by being a better coach and getting the most out of his guys. We will never consistently out recruit Urban or saban (well not until we beat them Omni the field anyway).

247's player points is better. This year so far we average 89.54 points per recruit. Ohio State is averaging 94.87. That's a significant difference. For comparison, MSU has an average of 87.01, PSU and ND 90.59. So we're slightly ahead of MSU and very slightly behind ND, but quite a bit back from OSU. To put it into perspective OSU is ahead of us by the same amount we are ahead of Rutgers, Purdue, Cincinnati, Illinois, and Kansas State. OSU has 14 top 150 recruits right now to our 3, that's a problem IMO. OSU's average recruit this class would be the 115th ranked overall player. Ours would be the 335th ranked overall player. That's a large difference when your talking a full class of kids.

I don’t understand the fear of OSU’s recruiting rankings. M outplayed them twice in a row now, and only lost because of qb play. Harbaugh is the qb whisperer, so ultimately this will work itself out.

I mean, in the end what is the difference of "outplaying" your opponent when the end result is still a loss?

Hoke's Michigan teams arguably "outplayed" comparatively better OSU teams in 2012 and 2013, but still ended up with a 1-3 record against them. Rivalry games can inspire players (and coaches) to perform out of their minds...

These "STARZ" could be the difference in scoring 1 more point, or holding OSU off for 1 more drive and finally tip those close games to Michigan's favor.

Maybe I am old school, but sports stuff that happens on Twitter isn't news. A guy losing his composure about his job is just a guy losing his composure about his job. It is small, it is unremarkable.

OSU is on a legendary recruiting tear fresh off yet another conference championship. Why would anyone expect to keep up with them? Michigan just finished the regular season unranked. Unrealistic expectations are a lot of the reason people are miserable.

Exactly. Fans should care about results on the field. Nothing else. Peoples' recruiting obsession is just downright bizarre. People going after the recruiting guy but would they ever go after harbaugh if he made a huge error that cost the game?

Just what exactly do all the whiny bitches complaining about all things Michigan football really accomplish.

A better question yet would be, what exactly are all the whiny bitches complaining about Michigan football actually seeking to accomplish.

If the answer to the second question is an improvement in Michigan football ... or anything else for that matter ... resultant from their whiny bitching, their fail is monumental.

Any improvement in Michigan football is despite them ... this is true of the, or anything else for that matter, part as well.

Not a good look.

There is no need to wallow in the mud with every troll on the internet.  That's an endless (and pointless) job.

The results on the field will do the talking.

That arrow is trending up, so there is really no need for any pointless drama.

You asked why people would freak out. The answer is simple. Michigan simply doesn't have a great track record of turning 3 star players into NFL players and All Conference players. Michigan needs the 4 and 5 star players. Obviously, starting out on equal talent footing with OSU is preferential to starting with less talent. Add that to the fact that Harbaugh didn't recruit will on the problem area of offensive line, and it becomes clear. You can grab as many 4 and 5 star QBs as you want but if the line is letting them get hammered you're going to have issues passing.

Why there is all this hand wringing about recruiting. Michigan was a good QB from winning EVERY game except 2 games since Harbaugh has been at Michigan. Now that the succession of Harbaugh recruits and QB’s officially begins with Peters you all can start judging. It amazes me that many of you forgot what kind of shape Michigan was in when Harbaugh arrived. He has worked miracles in 3 years. 2017 was his best coaching. Tough conference, youngest team in D1 and a bad QB situation. 2017 rock bottom for Harbaugh was Dantonio’s 3-9.

Its pretty interesting banter between our Recruiting Coordinator and some "fans" about a relevant topic. The fans are asses but they're clearly getting under Dudek's skin.

is the worst thing in all of this. Why? Because you don't do that if this is the only place you hear these complaints, and you're pretty happy with how things are going.

You do that only once that talk hits a certain pitch and it really irritates you, either because you sense there's some truth to it or because it's so much talk that you suspect everyone else thinks there's some truth to it.

In other words, this is an indication that the concern about our recruiting class is certainly heard and perhaps shared by people in Schembechler Hall.

Let's not pretend they aren't star gazing themselves.  Last year if they could have brought in 5* Najeeh Harris and Alex Leatherwood instead of 3* Joel Honigford and Kurt Taylor, they would have.

I’m a Buckeye, but I come in peace.. I enjoy reading this site because I have a ton of respect for the rivalry and of course I like to keep a close eye on the enemy.. I think you guys should just relax, I know being 1-5 against your rivals and 1-6 against top 10 opponents isn’t ideal, but Jim has changed the visibility and perception around Michigan Football and has lead the brand back to the national spotlight. I think you guys still lack the depth that we have in Columbus but the core of your roster with Peters or Patterson should be enough to compete for B10 titles and possibly national titles. Imo the lack of recruiting “success” for UM isn’t due to academic standards, I think that’s an old narrative considering that UM is recruiting the same kids as tOSU, Bama, Clemson, SC and etc. You guys have just missed on some kids whether it’s getting them to sign or developing them. But I’m looking forward to see what’s next in this rivalry. I don’t know about you guys but I’m excited that JT has finished his 20th season of eligibility, he’s been a great ambassador for my Buckeyes but he’s been the reason our offense has been incredibly inconsistent over the last 3 years. Looking forward to Haskins/Dobbins vs Peters or Patterson/Higdon next season. Happy Holidays and Go Bucks
