Recruiting Class Snapshot (Scout)

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Per mgouser Wettin 3's, Scout's Allen Trieu has a quick write-up on Michigan's recruiting class to date.

Nothing earth-shattering, but always enjoy Trieu's write-ups.  They're positive on all the commits, but Ben Braden ("... now considered as one of the gems of the class")  and Tom Strobel ("... our Scout staff thinks Tom Strobel may end up as one of the best players in this class") come up for particular praise.  And the photo of Ross in M gear is worth the click.

James Ross

He looks like he's been starting for 3 years.  Gonna look great in that uniform, with the head cracking and fool clowning.

Speaks volumes about how good recruiting's been when "the one that got away" is a guy a lot of people weren't thrilled about anyway. I probably would have put Pike in that slot but there haven't been many guys we really missed on.

You said, with Morris coming in 2013, there is not a dying need for a QB this year.  I absolutely think we should take one, but he doesn't need to be one of the top QB's in the country.  Personally I really hope they offer Fuller, I can see him as QB for Michigan or switching to another position a year or two into it because our QB needs are satisfied.

I prefer they take a guy like Fuller at this point if they are going to take any QB at all. Take a guy that can possibly play a different position, so long as he is aware that a position change is a possibility and he is receptive to the idea.

I don't think a QB is a necessity for this class, especially with the abundant needs at other positions, the fact that we took a QB last season, and the fact that we have a 2013 QB committed already.

Can't resist....responding....to this tired...subject....

It is a necessity to take a QB this class.  It always is a necessity, and the stat you present is evidence that coaches realize this.  It is very short sighted to not see the need for sufficient depth at QB.  Please hop in my DeLorean and let's travel to 2014...

DG is in the NFL (or maybe he didn't get his redshirt) and you have a RS Junior Bellomy, a true Sophmore Morris (he got a dozen snaps as a frosh), with a scrawny incoming frosh QB who needs a redshirt.  Let's say Morris does in fact turn out to be The Truth, but he get's injured in the 4th game, and is out for the rest of the season.  We're left with one legitimate option, Bellomy, and he isn't all that highly rated.

This isn't even a worse case scenario!  Bellomy could turn out to be a full on Coner (with equally sick lyrical skills) or Morris could decide a week before signing day that Washtenaw Community College is his dream school, leaving us only enough time to grab a low 3-star QB.

Basically, all those who don't see a need for a QB in this class are like a 1955 Biff getting the sports almanac, and unknowingly creating a terrible future.  I'm just trying to prevent this like Doc and Marty.

with you.  And it is a tired subject.  We simply must take a quarterback this year, I was just pointing out that I wouldn't mind if it were a quarterack who could possibly switch positions down the road if we find there is no nead for a quarterback.

Plenty of quarterbacks don't pan out like their supposed.  Clayton Richards was a highly touted quarterback who ended up not playing much or well and turning to baseball towards the end of his career.  Matt Guttirerez was another one who never really stepped up to the plate.

I don't think we need to worry about Brady Hoke's recruiting plan, by February someone will be locked in.

Trieu knows what he's talking about, so it's nice to see him be excited about the class.

Tom Strobel is one of the weirdest recruits, because ESPN has him as a low three star (our fourth lowest recruit), but Scout has him as one of our top players. It's interesting that recruiting sites certainly don't agree about a lot of guys.

One need. . .yet to fill is defensive tackle. We consider four-stars Danny O'Brien, Sheldon Day, and Ondre Pipkins to all be longshots.

-Michigan State's snapshot.

Between O'Brien and Pipkins, it is likely a matter of who commits first.

but didn't Pipkins not even include MSU in his top 7? It's probably not concrete, but it doesn't look like he's considering them at all.

PSU comes in at 21, but that's it for the B1G in the Top 25.

It's early but woah.  I'm as provincial as the next guy, but I won't mind if the B1G continues to be shut out this year.  A huge up year for us coupled with a down year for all others would go a long way to restoring the normal balance of power.

with only 5 spots left (or is it 6?)

I"ll take:

O'brien or Pipken @ DT

Washington or Wormley at DE

Dunn @ RB

Stanford or Darboh @ WR

and Diamond @ OL

Might be a tall order for mere mortals but just like drinking a glass of water for Hoke, Mattison and Borges.
