Recruitin' (Spots Left open for other Potential Commits?)

Submitted by MGoJeezy on
Sorry if this is wrong format or the wrong place, this is the first time I have posted content. I'm interested with what UM will do. I think you can only have 27 scholarship players? Right now we are at 22 and If at the end of this week Pie Young and Kareem Walker commit that would have us at 24. We would the have to pull back some offers, to leave spots for Gary (25) Hill (26) and Long (27)? I'm only guessing here, because I think our chances or getting Nauta are slim to none- seeing how we just offered a TE from Mizzou.

A few grayshirts and some potential decommits could open up some more spots. Room for other guys to commit as well.

You will get some snark because this topic has been addressed at length, including in the "upshot for the rest of the class section" of Ace's Hello:  Devin Bush post.  But, to answer your question:

1.  There will probably be a few kids from the current class that go elsewhere; that is normal, and I expect that if better prospects want to commit, Harbaugh will honestly tell them that while he will honor the scholarship, he doesn't expect them to have much, if any playing time, and suggest that they look elsewhere;

2.  Pie is not coming, as I do not believe that we would take anothe receiver unless it was someone truly elite;

3.  The max is 28, as early enrolees get backdated;

4.  Even if we get Gary, Hill, Walker and Long (far from a certainty and getting even 3 of these would be amazing), we would only be at 26 (and then see point 1), leaving room for at least 2 more.

don't end up committing, I see us missing out on a couple positions of need.

If we only have 5 spots left, which would conceivably be:

  • Gary
  • Mathis/Nauta
  • Long
  • Walker
  • Jones/Jackson

That would leave out a WR, another spot for Hill, an offensive lineman, and possibly another interior defensive lineman.  I'd especially hate to lose one of the two OL Michigan is after.  Should be interesting in any case.

Devin Bush Jr. makes 5 recruits from Florida, with two more targets from the Sunshine state still on the board. Not to mention three recruits are from New Jersey, with two more still on the board from the Garden State. Two others are from Maryland, with one more on the board from the Old Line State. Here's a free map to the recruits' homes! Home towns, that is. I mean, seriously...

Meanwhile, there is only one recruit from Michigan (Onwenu) with one other on the board (Lavert Hill) - and none from Ohio. This is shaping up to be an unprecedented recruiting class, in more ways than one!
