Recent Twitter follows by UM recruits

Submitted by Real and Spectacular on
Some interesting Twitter follows by some of our targets. Recent follows seem to be heavy UM for Singleton, Filiaga and Hicks. On the flip side, O'Maury Samuels has begun following some MSU coaches and staff. Not really a fan of that. Maybe it's just me, but I really liked Samuels film and hoping he will still be part of the class.

Are we sure he's being slow played? I feel like he's the RB with the most options and the pursuit of Harris has concerned him the most. Even if they strike out with Najee, they'll have work to do with Samuels and a visit in January is more helpful than one now. I think they may see him as RB/Athlete and if they get Harris they'll sell him on being more than a running back.

I honestly think that is where the staff is planning on playing him. They won't tell us or the kid that because he wants to play RB, but once they are on campus, many kids will do whatever to see the field faster. There are no current LB commits outside of Ross and Willie Gay seems like the only other option. That is substantially low considering we didn't get a large LB classthe year before. Samuels' tape is also not that good. He shows elite straight line speed, but little elusiveness. Reminds me of a smaller, faster version of Derrick Green. The main common attribute they both had coming out of HS is that neither of them ever make a serious cut in the backfield or to dodge a defender. They just hit the hole hard, but we don't know whether that's more the OL than the RB.

Ed: Forgot about jordan anthony who seems like a lock, but 2-3 LB's and 7-8 OL seems a little out of the ordinary.

Also, Dillon is considered an athlete by 247, easily could play LB in Don Browns scheme with that agility and contact courage

I really doubt HARBAUGH is recruting someone for a different position without telling the kid.  He might tell him he'll get a shot at RB, and if that doesn't work out, the staff thinks his best fit would be LB and see if he wants to make the move and get onto the field.  It would be really shitty to recruit a kid to play RB and as soon as he's on campus switch him over to LB without any warning beforehand and no shot at his original position.

become convinced that I fundamentally do not understand Twitter so I never pay attention to news regarding follows, etc.

If he doesn't end up in our class, I'd much prefer if he stayed out west. He's a tremendous athlete and should turn into a quality RB wherever he ends up. Please let that not be anywhere in the B1G.

Teams also need leadership and people who motivate team mates. Maybe Taylor isn't off the charts when it comes to measurables and film, but maybe he will become one of the key "glue guys" who helps push his team to being better. Those roles can be very important when striving for perfection and National Championships.

Right...but talented running backs can be helpful for winning championships, too. I'm not saying hard work is useless in a running back, but leadership/toughness can come from offensive linemen and tight ends and linebackers and safeties or anywhere. You don't have to sacrifice talent at a key skill position just to get some leadership.

Magnus, you know far more about recruiting than I do, but can't Michigan get a Samuels type talent next year?  They seem pretty competent in that area right now and getting a stud next year would be highly likely, right?  If the hotbed of Grayson and Taylor's style (Frank Gore?) might be what attracts them to his commitment.

Maybe, but you could say that about DT, too. We could just try to steal a DT from Toledo or CMU. You want the best guys you can get. Michigan recruited a ton of high-level talents this year at RB, and Harris is the only one in the top 275 we seem to have a good shot with. That's even while people should be able to see that Michigan doesn't really have an elite running back who can be counted on to take over games.

Totally agree Clarence....Samuels appears to be more athletic, but who are we to question the coaches judgment on longterm potential.  I'm wondering if this means they see more upside forTaylor, more risk with Samuels, or do they see the two fairly evenly and it's a long-game to establish a recruiting base in GA?

Does following someone on Twitter actually mean anything? I am not on Twitter, but I know of people who follow folks that they love AND folks that they hate. Couldn't it just be, like, you know, devoid of any deeper meaning?

You can follow anybody you like.  It could be completely random.  I can start following Urban Meyer today just to read his nonsense.  Doesn't mean I'm now an OSU fan.

But Twitter also allows direct (private) messaging, like texting.  To do that, both parties have to follow each other.  Rather than give out his private phone number to a dozen people, I suppose a recruit could follow all of the relevant coaches and fellow commits of a particular school.  Then they can communicate privately via Twitter.

My understanding is that the reason Samuels had a delayed trip is that he needed to retake his ACTs and that retest was this past weekend. So his visit was rescheduled for right after the dead period. Now, maybe it's also true he's being slow played a bit to see if Harris flips from Bama. That might explain what seems to be some saltiness on his end. But fwiw, my understanding is that there was a substantive reason why he rescheduled his visit.

FWIW though, if we strike out on Harris and also lose Samuels I'm ok with that this year. We've got Higdon & Evans plus Walker. I'd rather use those extra slots for more speculative high variance recruits like linemen. All it would do is put a premium on having a good RB haul in 2018.
