The reason Urban will be fired that no one is talking about
Surprisingly, no one is talking about the man making the decision in the UM case when debating whether or not OSU will fire him. Dr. Michael Drake, OSU president, is a Stanford alum who received his MD from UCSF and was previously the president of UC Irvine. He has no ties to Ohio State and is far more academic focused than his predecessor Gordon Gee. In 2014 he fired the band director, Jon Waters, and then spent a million dollars defending the university in litigation fees. If he spent a million to fire the band director, what is 38 mil to fire Meyer? Also, looking at interviews/body language he particularly receptive to Archie Griffins "welcome to Ohio State you better support athletics" sit down. Link. (9 minute mark is most notable)
Also, a guy like him, Stanford UG/UCSF MD could have higher career goals beyond being president of OSU. Look at ex-Dartmouth president Jim Kim who has a similar profile: Jim Kim has an Md/PhD from Harvard and went on to be president of the world bank. If Drake keeps Meyer those opportunities are gone--zero chance institutions like the NIH/WHO would consider him as a head.
To date he has placed Meyer on administrative leave and Gene Smith on vacation. All of the typical OSU insiders are completely in the dark because the athletic department has been locked out of the investigation. His youtube appearances deal almost exclusively with academics and rarely athletics. Here at 2:40 he talks about integrity, "you have to mean what you say and say what you mean so that people will trust you."
If OSU retains Meyer it would set the university's reputation back 20 years. That is the last thing Michael Drake would want on his watch.

Find it weird that nothing has leaked out from the investigation, if there actually is an investigation. Either way someone is getting fired and there is a zero percent chance it is Meyer.

I think he stays BUT.
He got caught in a lie then doubles down on twitter. He humiliated himself IMHO in front of the country and has no sympathy outside of OSU. Let him stay and hope the media pressure stays as well.
To me it's win win. Keep him in disgrace and maybe something else comes out. Fire him and watch the turmoil until the hire zombie Woody Hayes.

This ultimately is a matter of contractual law rather than a Title IX case, per se.
I doubt this will trigger a federal investigation. What it does involve is whether Meyer is guilty of an contract policy requirement of the university dealing with a reporting sexual assault or misconduct-related issue to a superior, which would explain why the coach acknowledged contacting AD Gene Smith about it, rather than the Title IX office.
Given the lack of public record information about what Meyer actually did, other than his own word, the investigation seems to be proceeding without special regard as to the public and police record of Smith family complaints. And they only bear on Meyer as it relates to a timeline of what he knew and when he knew it, and what intervening action he took in response, and whether it was contractually appropriate.
To me, he clearly lied about his response to certain questions when he addressed the recent firing of Zach Smith during his Media Days appearance in Chicago. He tried to obfuscate the record with benign remarks, and claim it as a private personnel matter, which, it was, but then noted that he consulted others before announcing Smith's actual dismissal.
He acknowledged dealing with a domestic violence complaint involving Smith, as a staff intern, when he was he was his head coach at Florida. In explaining that situation, Meyer was more forthcoming than in any other comments about his record of Smith's supervision.
He was never asked specifically about whether Smith was arrested for any incident in 2015. He claimed instead that he directed others to look into it at some point, and that they in turn reported nothing of substance, so any media report arising from it was questionable at best. That's how he seemed to characterize the general reporting. It basically wasn't worth his time to personally investigate and nothing was actually found meriting his personal review.
But in public reporting, details have now turned up that would at least contradict that original assertion and compromise Meyer's background story, even if his claim of reporting a 2015 issue to Gene Smith is true.
Over the weekend, in trying to bolster the case for Meyer, Eleven Warriors blogger, Jeff Snook, actually corroborated one element of Courtney Smith's claim that everyone who worked on Meyer's staff including their wives, had a certain level of awareness of marital issues with her ex-husband, including apparently Tom Herman and his wife.
So, in alleging that Herman was the primary source for Brett McMurphy's original story about Meyer's handling of Smith's employment status on Saturday, which Herman and McMurphy quickly denied, Herman also acknowleged having offered financial assistance to Courtney Smith before her ex-husband was actually fired.
Herman, hired as OSU's offensive coordinator in 2011, while Smith served under him as a receivers coach, left Meyer's staff in 2014, becoming head coach at Houston before moving on to Texas.
Whether or not Smith was a good coach, a good husband or father, whether he acted appropriately or not, is irrelevant, because this investigation comes down to whether Meyer supervised his conduct properly and met all his contractual obligations in doing so. That's what the investigation is ultimately about regardless of its soap opera context.

The question is whether he has those bigger aspirations. His pedigree suggests he will be. If he’s looking for a better job, then he needs to make his stamp on the place and no bigger way to do that than firing Urban Meyer.

Fact is until you start really pissing off your own alumni, donors and fan base, your reputation outside of your own community doesn't matter - as sad as that is...

I've lived in Ohio for 25 years. The academic reputation of OSU has increased a lot in the last 25 years to the point where (gulp!) it is actually a fine university. Its reputation as a football powerhouse dwarfs its academic reputation but they have worked really hard to improve that as well. Hiring Drake was a important part of that strategy. They are really stuck between a rock and a hard place-- their reputation takes a hit if they keep him, but (potentially) their football team suffers if they don't. IMO they are probably better off in the LONG run to fire him, take the high ground and get another very good coach. I'm not confident they do that, though. I do think if they don't fire him, Dr. Drake moves on at his first opportunity.

Well, this is not the only sports-related public relations problem on The Ohio State docket right now. They are also facing an ongoing investigation and lawsuits stemming from having employed a former doctor who may have sexually molested dozens if not more university athletes from the football to the wrestling program during his tenure.
And that case has at least implicated a leading congressman as a possible enabler while working as assistant wrestling coach.
The university president has to balance the financial needs of the school against the public relations and donation hits it will take while demonstrating forceful decision-making in either case. And, in my view, this seriously complicates the decision on Meyer's status.

Doctors sure have a lot of egos but it should not be a reason to fire Meyer. Drake probably is more willing than Gee in firing the head football coach but it does not mean that he is not subject to the same pressure from alumni and major donors.

The difference between $1M and $38M is $37M. That's a boatload of cabbage even for OSU. I personally don't think they are going to fire him. I bet they are spending the two week timeframe trying to figure out their story and defense on keeping him. They're not investigating shit.

Can somebody explain to me why Zach Smith was fired if it was just nothing? It's quite clear that Urban is using the Snook guy to put out lots of misleading and untrue things, but if he is alleging that the abuse was made up then why didn't OSU investigate and then deal with Smith? It seems like it would have been premature to fire him if it wasn't real and you would think that the media mouthpieces for the program would not want to leave a case for wrongful dismissal.

The argument against $38M being a a big deal (i.e. Firing Urban)...
This data is from 2016. The athletic department brings in $170M+ per year. $79M is spent on "staff & admin pay and benefit" and "other". They freeze a couple of head counts and cut spending on other and the $38M is covered in two years easy.

Drop in the bucket vs. overall university revenues. New coach, Stoops, Campbell etc. would work and these revenues would not change (ticket sales already baked in for 2018).
Overall university revenues are in the billions and among the academic leadership crowd regard for football etc is mixed at best. Believe me, Gordon Gee is the exception, not the rule. While revenue athletics matters to the brand tOSU is way bigger (rightfully or wrongly) than Meyer. If they move on they'll just negotiate down from $37 million and hire someone equally qualified as Meyer (Stoops) or young hot coach (Campbell).

Normally I don’t like wild speculation like this, however I do like this specific new analysis the OP has uncovered
I originally assumed OSU, being OSU, will do everything to keep Meyer and that he would probably stay.
But I completely agree that OSU is only a stepping stone for their current president and because his reputation, presumably his reputation for unquestioned ethical standards, will be more important than a winning coach, he will do everything to get rid of Meyer. To get rid of Meyer he will need some proof and then he will need to convince their biggest doners.
In either case above, whether they are predisposed to retain or fire, they will need clear evidence.

I want Urban to stay--for only one reason: I want harbs to beat him, with at least the same consistency of Bo vs. Woody. So, Harbs has a few to make up, but I never thought he'd be strong until the fourth or fifth year anyway. Harbs v Urbane could be a great game to watch for years to come.
