The REAL recruiting board!
Most notable updates from 'wednesday recruiting'...
#1) it sounds like cornelius jones might end up being a DB here. he's pretty big, 6-2, 200lbs, so i'll list him at strong safety for now. makes him even more intriguing...and he was very intriguing to me even before this. #2) it sounds like we're slipping on LB Olaniyan.
So, according to Sam Webb, we've still got 4-6 scholarships available. It's possible that we're going to take more than that (not renewing 5th year seniors, assigning early enrollees to last year's class, etc.). Personally, I think that is true, and I am looking forward to RichRod busting out the snake oil. But for now, for the sake of simplicity, I will keep my predictions at 4-6.
It sounds like we've got the inside track on Christian, Grimes, Beachum, and maybe Murphy. Here is a list of all the players that we SEEM to still be in on, in order of our in-ness. Like I said before, I think Rich Rod's got some under the radar snake oil stuff going on, but I'll leave that alone for now.
RB - McDowell
WR - Stills?
DT - Beachum, Thornton
DE - Murphy, Clemmings, Mackal
LB - Furman, Cornelius, Nealy (new offer), Olaniyan?
S - Knight, Jefferson, Parker
CB - Christian, Grimes, Mathis
If we do indeed land the four players that we seem to have the inside track on, I would like to see us using the last two scholarships on a linebacker (Furman!?), and a safety (Knight!?). If we can land a class of those six, the complete class would look something like this:
QB: Gardner
SB: White
FB: Hopkins
WR: Robinson, Williamson
WR: Miller
SR: Drake
SR: Dileo
TE: Jackson
LT:
LG:
C: Pace
RG:
RT:
NT: BEACHUM
DT: Talbott
DE: Wilkins, Paskorz
Q: Kinnard, MURPHY
MLB:
WLB: FURMAN
SLB: Robinson
SS: Jones
FS: KNIGHT, Johnson
CB: CHRISTIAN, Avery
CB: GRIMES, Talbott
If that is indeed the recruiting class we sign, then this is what I see our starting lineup looking like next year. I'm not going to list BACKUPS here, just guys that I think have a shot to play...a lot.
QB: Forcier/Gardner
SB: Shaw/Smith...Cox-goalline...Robinson-harvin!?
FB: Moundros
WR: Hemingway...Stokes/Robinson (jr. will get hurt)
WR: Stonum
SR: Odoms
SR: Roundtree/Gallon
TE: Koger
LT: Dorrestein/Omameh/Lewan/Schofield
LG: Schilling
C: Molk
RG: Omameh/Ferrara/Barnum/Washington
RT: Huyge
NT: Campbell/Martin
DT: Martin/Van Bergen
DE: Van Bergen/LaLota/Wilkins/Roh
Q: Roh/Ezeh
MLB: Ezeh/Fitzgerald...Bell?
WLB: Mouton/Leach...FURMAN!?
SLB: Jones/Hawthorne/Robinson
SS: Kovacs/Williams...Emilien/Gordon...KNIGHT!?
FS: Turner/Woolfolk
CB: Warren
CB: Woolfolk/Turner/CHRISTIAN!?

That depends on how many of last year's early enrollees were signed back to the 2008 class.

Right - do we have any idea how many that was? IIRC, we could have signed as many as 5 people back, as we only ended up with a 21 man class the prior year.

I don't know how many we signed back to 2008. That's probably something that we could only take an educated guess at, since I don't know if Rodriguez would ever care enough to say, "Yeah, we signed this guy, this guy, and this guy back to the 2008 class, so we have X amount of scholarships." Somebody out there might know, I guess, but I don't.

Wouldn't it always be advantageous to sign back assuming you had open spots the previous year? Is there any reason you wouldn't?

I can't think of any reason why a team wouldn't sign a player back to the previous class if possible.

Despite losing BG, I love the idea of the huge increase in SIZE on the DL next year (as I have been saying, this is all based on the assumption Big Will is ready to be an every down player next year):
NT: Currently we have Martin at about 290 lbs, Campbell will probably play around 315(?) when he gets in shape. [+25 lbs]
DT: Currently, RVB at 275. If Martin moves to this position, he adds size and is more able to utilize his quickness than at NT. [+15 lbs]
DE: Graham is 265. Not much here, RVB will probably slim down a bit (he bulked up to play DT)... Call this one about [+5 lbs]
Q: Roh gets a year of OMGBARWISIZE, and packs on [+25 lbs] and maybe more of muscle
Thats an extra 70 lbs on the DL, or the equivilant of one RR cornerback recruit. This is like having a 12th man!!!
(Now back to my serious optimism)
We could really use the size since it would allow the DL to occupy more blockers, keeping opposing OL from moving to the second level and allowing our smaller LBs to flow more freely and utilize their speed.

roh gaining 25 lbs is quite an assumption.
still though...
running downs:
NT: Campbell
DT: Martin
DE: Van Bergen
Q: Roh
passing downs:
NT: Martin
DT: Van Bergen
DE: Wilkins/LaLota/Roh
Q: Roh/Ezeh
it'll be nice to have some more depth...and size...but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's going to be be BETTER without brandon graham.
