Rashan Gary is First Team Preseason Sporting News All-American

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

The Sporting News released its preseason All-American team today, and Rashan Gary made the first team, while Mason Cole made the second team. The first team is presented as a slide show, which is annoying, but here's the link to Rashan's page so that you don't have to click through everything:

He's gonna be a monster this year.

Certainly does. The only thing that was able to stop Mo Hurst last year was...Mo Hurst. I wonder if his belly rub against FSU that he did instead of recovering Francois' fumble haunts him like it still haunts me. I believe that was the play before Cook's 75yd run. Hurst recovers that fumble and we win that game.

It's amazing to me how slept on Mo still is. He's gotten love from Kiper and PFF, but that's about it. He'll be a national name come December.

It will be great when our d-line knocks several qb's out of the game with Barrett being the main one. I actually think winovich will have the most sacks this year. If Mone can stay healthy and just plug up the middle with double teams not moving him, well guess what, Gary, Winovich, Hurst, Kemp, Villian, Hudson are going to wreak havoc and provide much needed pain. All American status is good also.

Lot of pressure being put on the young man. Fortunately, he seems like he has the exact mentality to handle it. Everyone already looks to him as a leader and he's not even 20 yet. If he has great focus on his assignments and doesn't try too hard to make plays, he should be an upgrade over an already outstanding Anchor in Wormley.

EDIT: Also, Josey Jewell is still at Iowa?? We can't get Clark a Medshirt but Jewell can stay at Iowa for 8 harvests.

Gary shouldn't be first team, even though he'll finish there, IMO. I think we're about to see something we haven't seen in a loooong time at that position (over the course of a full year - because Taco's last 4 games were unreal). And having Hurst and Mone...even Winovich is going to be what makes the difference.

You can't go all off of flashes and high school hype. Is Da'Shawn Hand the other DE?

Not necessarily.

Most take into account what a player has already done. Come on, you know this...

Otherwise, they would be chalked full of 5* guys who've never done anything but are getting their first shot.

Let's go ahead and make Cam Akers 1st team, Dalvin Cook is gone. What about Greg Little at Ole Miss? This is his year to shine. Bo Scarbrough at Alabama is going to be their featured back this year.

I think Devin Bush Jr. is going to all over the place as a starter. Khaleke Hudson is going to be a major player this year now that Peppers is gone. I haven't seen either mentioned as preseason All-B1G players.

You and I both know that these lists usually always take what you've done into account...it's not the end all, be all...but it's a factor in the equation.

Again, Gary is going to be there at the end of the year...but, IMO, every other list I've ever seen (for football, basketball is a completely different story)...add what's you've shown into the mix with what you're expected to do this upcoming year.

While I certainly think he can get there, that's a lot to expect of a guy who didn't play very much last year. His potential is limitless to be certain, but it's going mostly on hype.

But here's to a double-digit sack season and something to the equivalent of 20 TFL for Gary this season.

We need Winovich and Gary to be pretty close production wise to Taco and Wormley. I think Hurst and Mone can be close to as good as Glasgow and Godin/Hurst were. Mone won't be as good as Ryan but Hurst will be much better. Gary could have a Clowney sophomore year this year.

Sporting News list Mason Cole on the Second Team OL. He's been very solid for a long time, but not sure that too many people even around these parts would rate him on an AA level. Hoping he lives up to the expectations as a senior.

Also, in your weekly sign of the apocalypse, there is an Indiana defender listed on the Second Team as well (Teegray Scales). Scary times.

Indiana fans (there are dozens of them) will tell you that Scales was a better player than Peppers last year (he wasn't). But he is actually good. They have a very good corner as well in Fant.

This is going to be an exciting year

Sure Taco Charlton was low key dominant but Rashan Gary for the next 2-3 seasons is going to strike fear into the minds of all opposing QBs. And when they focus too much on Gary then Hurst is going to eat them alive

Interesting that there is a relative lack of Ohio State players on their preseason AA list considering they have them at #3 on their preseason top-25. The only one I see is OG/C Billy Price. I would have thought one of their DL players (Tyquan Lewis or Sam Hubbard?) would have made it considering the hype they have received this offseason.

I don't disagree, but I think the strength of OSU's DL, and the reason they are getting so much preseason hype is the depth of their DE rotation. OSU has 4 above-average DEs (+ DT Dre'Mont Jones) that they feel comfortable rotating to keep them all relatively fresh through the whole season.

DE (2016 stats):

  • Tyquan Lewis - 29 tlks, 10.5 TFLs, 8 sacks, 3 FFs and 3 PBUs
  • Sam Hubbard - 46 tlks, 8 TFLs, 3.5 sacks, 2 PBUs
  • Nick Bosa - 29 tackles, 7 TFLs, 5 sacks
  • Jalyn Holmes - 33 tlks, 8.5 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 FF, 1 PBU

I am definitely more surprised by the omission of Tyquan Lewis than Sam Hubbard. Lewis is the B1G's reigning "DL of the Year," and a RsSr that passed on the NFL draft last year.

I can't remember everything that was said. He took his Michigan official for the OSU game. I remember he said if these Michigan fans didn't sit down, he would slap someone. Something to that effect. He said some other things that I can't remember now. He of course did apologize later.
