Rashan Gary Argument

Submitted by Santa Clause on

So my friends and I got into an argument. One of my friends is an OSU fan and the other one is an MSU fan. They told me that IF Rashan Gary committed, then he would start immediately on the d-line. I argued that there was no way in hell because our entire d-line next year is filled with seniors who can play at a high level. I also said that he might become heavily involved in the rotation but not starting. Then my friends said that he is more talented than anyone on that d-line right now, and you have to play the best players no matter what. I'm wondering what you guys think about this? Would Gary sit behind an experienced defensive line or start ahead of all of them like my friends think?

I'm as cynically pessimistic as anyone on the board, but regardless I don't think there's any reason to be anything other than very optimistic that Gary commits to Michigan.

Yes, when it comes to recruiting anything can happen, but it's possible I can be hit by lightning today, and I'm not worrying about that either.

First lets get his LOI, but no way he starts but gets playing time. Got Mone, Glascow, Wormley, Henry, Taco, Hurst, Shelton Johnson, even true freshman Elliott. That's a ton of bodies along the front four which is a great problem to have.

I think if he is the best player, then he will start.  Probably won't be the best player though to start the season...

I think anybody who doesn't think he would start is full of it. Even though we have a good defensive line his talent is shoulders above anyone that's on the roster. There is no doubt that he was start.

You play the best players and the ones who give you the best chance to win. If it's the established guys play them, if it's hotshot freshman, play him. Performance matters, not age.

I've only seen bits and pieces of Rashan Gary in actual playing against good competition, but what I saw in the Under Armour game showed me an elite talent. I know the Under Armour game is against the top High School Seniors, but in that game he dominated on every snap. I see Rashan Gary starting from his 1st game as a Wolverine, he's just that dang good. Now let's hope we're the team that lands him. GO BLUE!!!

If you're not from ohio and you choose to root for them, you are the biggest douche of all time.

This is akin to chosing to become a sith lord.  Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

On another note,  maybe a buckeye fan bit him?  I have always thought that if a buckeye fan bites you then you will become a buckeye fan kinda like the walking dead.  Because of this, I can no longer take my kids to the Toledo zoo (ever notice how much red and grey there is at that place?)

He'd get playing time, probably not as a starter.  If he did actually dislodge someone on the line right now, that would immediately make the backup line one of the best lines in the conference, maybe in the country.

I wondered why an alleged UM fan like the OP (aka Santa Clause) would create a thread that stirs up argument about a prized recruit’s future at UM---eg whether he would start at UM or whether he would instead go to Ole Miss.  The OP (aka Santa Clause) claims that the arguments about Gary are motivated by his alleged membership in an unlikely circle of 3 friends: One for OSU, one for MSU and one for UM (allegedly, himself).

Somewhat skeptical, I looked at his past posts.  Elsewhere, he blamed the OSU/MSU “friends” for a variety of negative opinions about UM coaches: eg that “we have bad recruiting classes…(that coaching led) to every players damage in potential…(or that we) had great recruiting classes buteven worse coaching”.  In his past posts, he referred to players in “Jim's doghouse all year”. Then he suggested that Lloyd Carr acted like a “douchebag” with Ty Law.

I further questioned the alleged fandom of the OP (aka Santa Clause) when he demonstrated less knowledge of UM than OSU.  He seemed most familiar with UM commits that had decommited from OSU, like Walker—whose abilities he now questions.  Also, while he claimed no prior knowledge about UM history (the relationship of Carr and Ty Law), he was quick to demonstrate his knowledge of OSU history-- pointing out that Bosa started as a freshman at OSU.  (which he now claims would not happen at UM for Gary, even though Gary ranks 36 places higher than Bosa did).

I then found it a bit ironic when he joked about being Santa Claus (coming) “into your house uninvited” and hoping we would all be “at sleep.”  I wondered if he was indeed like Santa Claus: somebody who tries to enter our virtual home uninvited.  Was he hiding his identity in a costume, like on online Buckeye claiming to be clothed in UM gear?

Of course, Santa Claus would be giving gifts when entering our home, right?  Sure.  But so appeared to be the Greeks with their Trojan Horse.

Please tell me that you are joking. Because if you are then that would be funny as hell. If not, then I have some points to make.

1. I made this thread to have a healthy discussion with other members of the board to see what their opinion's were about Gary starting. Nothing fishy there.

2. Other people told me on this thread that Gary was an old miss lean now and I asked them why. I never suggested he was an old miss lean.

3. Ty Isaac was in Jim's dog house all year if you want to admit it or not.

4. On a previous thread about Ty Law, someone stated that Carr didn't support Law's decision to enter the draft early and basically told him to "f" off. So I said that he acted like a dbag in that instance.

5. Walker did struggle in the AA game and its practices. Not to mention he slid down the overall rankings.

6. Anyone who knows about big ten football knows bosa was a four year starter.

7. Yes, it is ironic that I have 3 friends who root for our arch rivals but that's just how the dice rolled.

8. As for the rest, I don't know what to tell you man. You sound like a crazy conspiracy theorists that wears a tin foil hat to hide from the illuminate.

"Wow.  Didn't know Lloyd Carr would do something like that.  Kind of a douchebag move if you ask me."  I can put all the other quotes here if you like.  But my view is that your comments here have been generally negative...and they make me wonder about your motivations.

It would be naïve to think that OSU fans do not come to UM forums. It would be naïve to claim they never pretend to be UM fans.  It would be as naïve as believing in Santa Claus(e).

With Gary this would presumably be the two-deep:

WDE: Charlton, Gary

DT: Henry, Hurst

NT: Glasgow, Mone

SDE: Wormley, Godin

All of these guys would play. DL gets so much rotation that the 2nd guy can play like 40% of snaps. Gary could conceivably take snaps away from Godin and be a 50/50 with Taco, thus predicting starter-level snaps for him is actually quite reasonable. Things like cutting off a zone read take time to learn, though.

Yes he can play WDE. His future is on the interior sure but he's got the moves and the rush and the responsibility for WDE, especially in Michigan's/Brown's system that almost never zone blitzes. In a nickel over he's rushing the passer, stunting, setting the edge against LTs, and getting optioned a lot.

If you watched the National Championship game Clemson has an excellent WDE who's bigger than Gary and built like him who made a spectacular play where he was optioned, squeezed in juuuust enough to make the quarterback think he has to keep it or else his RB will be swallowed at the line, then read the keep and exploded for a TFL. Coker isn't exactly Tebow but it's a rare QB who could have gotten out of that one when he's getting hit half a second after standing in the handoff position.

That's the kind of play Gary could bring to that position. Someone with the scary athleticism in that size of a body can't be shoved or kicked (like Roh was as a freshman) but has the agility to make crazy-ass plays that negate the mathematical advantage of the spread and cause havoc on passing offenses.

"Will" is WLB, i.e. the position Bolden played this year. We're not talking about will.

In a normal year, Rashan Gary would start for our DL.  But this is not a normal year.  Next year Michigan returns arguably the best DL in Michigan football history (sorry 1985).

Look at it this way. If Chris Wormley or Willie Henry were able to play in the under armor game, they would get a hell of a lot more than 3 sacks against a high school offensive line.

There is little doubt Gary will play.  He IS that good.  But i just cannot see him starting - maybe, MAYBE at WDE.  But he cannot unseat the other 3 positions IMO.  Were just too good there.
