Rashad Weaver Decommits

I'm sure there will be more mudslinging from this one.
EDIT: For those who didn't click the link, he says that JH says they didn't know if they would have room for him and ultimately offered him a PWO. He does thank JH and UofM for the opportunity. Not as bad as Swenson, but some will overreact to it.

Better players available at the same position, pushing the limits without "oversigning." Who knows.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:45 PM ^
That was a helluva post questioning whether a kid is academically eligible...when it would have taken you two seconds to find out that the kid had offers from Columbia and Cornell among others. Even Ace's original hello post stated that. I know you will respond that you didnt know and you shouldnt have to research the guy before opening your mouth...but I guess your post shows that if you dont know any details then there is no reason to post wild speculation.

My son had offers to several Ivy league schools because he could throw heavy things a long way. He couldn't have qualified for any of them if they let him square his GPA.

I'm hoping my "/s" meter is broken, but...
January 25th, 2016 at 9:34 PM ^
Ughhh. I really hope the star reevaluates their recruiting strategies. Both in terms of offering kids there is a good chance they won't want at the end of the day and in terms of communicating with recruits they are on the fence about.

But he says "it's okay" after all the bad stuff!
February 3rd cannot come fast enough.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:36 PM ^
Jesus, this is getting out of hand. He makes it sound like JH just told him today. If I knew he wasn't a part of the class several weeks ago (and everyone else here knew also), why does he have to make it sound like this was just sprung on him?
January 25th, 2016 at 10:12 PM ^
To be fair to the kid -- we didn't "know" he wasn't part of the class until just now! Certainly we "believed" that he would not ultimately enroll at Michigan based on signs, rumors and numbers.
Regardless of what we did or did not know, the fact is he has every right to consider himself a commit unitl explicitly told otherwise. I do wish the staff would have better / faster communication. Granted, we are only hearing one-side....but that one side sounds pretty bad
January 25th, 2016 at 10:17 PM ^
Prior to JH we would have looked down our noses at this type of recruiting. The time has come to either accept that we were all full of shit, or call out JH for shitty practices.
January 25th, 2016 at 11:32 PM ^
If Sparty or the turds down south were doing this same thing we would be up in arms. I guess in the future we'll have to temper our sentiment when similar scenarios arise around rival programs?
January 25th, 2016 at 9:36 PM ^
And his senior season did not show improvement. Too bad but he will find a more appropriate home where he will log many minutes on the field rather than the bench.
January 25th, 2016 at 11:19 PM ^
.... did not show improvement."
Magnus, hardly one to shower praise where he thinks it unmerited, was positively astonished by how much Weaver improved in his senior season. Clearly you disagree. I'd be interested in hearing what similarities you see between his junior and senior Hudl film.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:39 PM ^
I'm sure an explanation will come out from the Michigan side (indirectly or anonymously) that will make this look less bad, but at this point the sheer number of guys getting nudged out looks bad in and of itself. Hoping this is a one class deal as Harbaugh adjusts to the level of interest Michigan and he himself generates and extends offers a little more conservatively going forward. I really don't want this to be the MO going forward.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:50 PM ^
I would qualify committable offers. It's one thing to extend an offer to a "Plan B" or "Plan C" guy and not accept the kid's commitment right away. It's another thing to accept a kid's commitment only to drop them later when it looks like "Plan A" may be available. Obviously if there is an academic issue or some other offer terms that were violated that's a different story.
As with most everybody else I don't know all the details in these cases but it's a bad look this keeps happening though we probably knew this was coming in this case.
Hopefully the staff adjusts the approach in future cycles.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
January 25th, 2016 at 9:38 PM ^
UM will have a top 5 recruiting class this year and will continue to do so under Harbaugh. We knew for a while that Weaver was not going to be a part of this class. He has other D1 offers and will be fine just like Swenson. Negative attention won't stop Harbaugh from bringing in top tier talent.

it make when "we" knew? People talk about these kids like they are livestock at an auction. These are individual lives that are impacted and there is absolutely no need to unless you just don't give a fuck.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:25 PM ^
The only reason we knew was because he was the lowest rated kid in the class.
January 25th, 2016 at 11:45 PM ^
People talk about animals at auctions.
Animals are not recruits.
People shouldn't talk about recruits like animals at an auction??
Weaver is going to do just fine. He almost and still might have a chance to play for Michigan. These recruits are exceptional athletes. That is fun to talk about. That logic works, I think.
No one is talking about recruits as animals. They are talking about recruits as recruits. That is OK.... here... have a fuck.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:38 PM ^
I trust the coaches and I know that they're just trying to put together the best class. However, these moves seem so out of character for Michigan. I hope this all shakes out and doesn't hurt our standing with any of the blue chip recruits.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:39 PM ^
Out of curiosity how is this "not as bad as Swenson?" The staff offered, he committed, seven months later and a week before NSD, the staff decided they could do better and pulled his offer. He may end up in a better position than Swenson by accident, but unless I'm missing something (totally possible) it seems to me to be the exact same behavior by JH and the staff. It's hard to say at this point that the Swenson situation was a misunderstanding or that he just wouldn't take a hint.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:41 PM ^
You're ignorant.

Didn't he schedule a Temple visit like 5 weeks ago? Wonder how he could have such foresight if the staff just told him today.... Also, haven't Ace, Brian, Lorenz, and Sam all been counting this kid out of the class for weeks now? Weird, how they all know, and he scheduled the visit, even though the staff only just told him today. Really weird.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:25 PM ^
Exactly. He knew. Yet he acts as if he's shocked today.
Under the old regime, the staff would have cancelled his commitment as soon as he visited Temple, and nobody was raking Hoke and Co. over the coals for that.
January 26th, 2016 at 8:59 AM ^
Well if you don't talk to someone for 7 months. They probably start realizing things aren't going to end well

Well, obviously you haven't followed the Swenson situation. Even his coach said they were aware of things quite awhile ago.

It may not sound good from him but he was taking visits for a reason. If I'm Harbaugh in the future I'm not accepting commits from recruits you have conditions on (I.e come to camp, I want to see how you do your senior year, etc)
January 25th, 2016 at 9:39 PM ^
I don't get why kids don't get the drift..... Like you havent been contact with them in months?
That is like showing up to my ex girlfriends place who wouldn't call me for months, nor did I try and call her and saying what I thought we were fine?

I expect more professionalism out of the coaches than giving kids the cold shoulder and hoping they take a hint.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:09 PM ^
Yep.
All I have to say is we had better win a fucking national championship...

That won't make unprofessional behavior magically professional though.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:45 PM ^
The fact anybody here is blaming Weaver for one damn second is astonishing.
This isn't what Michigan is supposed to be.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:50 PM ^
Not blaming him at all.... Trying to put myself in his shoes I don't know why I'd want to go somewhere I wasn't wanted

The head football coach gets to decide what the football team gets to be. It's been reported that Bo yanked offers as well. This isn't new to Michigan or new to college football. And for all we know Weaver was offered with conditions, he did not meet those conditions, and now he's gone.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:09 PM ^
Social media didn't exist when Bo was coach.
January 25th, 2016 at 11:33 PM ^
Sorry but one random anecdote about Bo pulling a scholarship does not mean this is an accepted practice or should be. Man people will rationalize anything.

January 26th, 2016 at 3:15 AM ^
And Bo pulled the scholarship because the kid did not keep working hard in HS. He did not pull it because the next shiny object caught his eye.
January 25th, 2016 at 10:58 PM ^
be. Unfortunately, for some here the standard now is Ohio State and Alabama (as in we aren't as bad).
January 25th, 2016 at 11:39 PM ^
For years we've touted Michigan as 'classier than thou'. Does the phrase "The Michigan Way" ring a bell with anybody? This underhand recruiting practice is forcing the fans to either a) Make excuses for it, or b.) say, "welp, that's what being competitive is going to cost"... We can't have it both ways.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:40 PM ^
I can't wait to read the hot takes from everyone about how awful this is. Should be really insightful.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:51 PM ^
kinda like your insightful post
January 25th, 2016 at 9:54 PM ^
insightful as "the kid can call it off late" or "the kid should have figured out what the silence met" or the rest of the rationalizations.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:42 PM ^
Week before NSD to lay this on a kid ... guess we have to wait a week to hear the other side. Feels like a backward step to the camps etc. I guess we stay tuned and hope for a response that has some integrity. No one read the Freep. Please.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:44 PM ^
The Swenson bit was out there at least a month prior and Weaver has visited the likes of Syracuse and Temple.
Doesn't fit the narrative though, so you won't hear about it.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:50 PM ^
Don't act like there is only one narrative here. There are good chunks of comments both questioning these recruiting tactics and defending them.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:51 PM ^
...and what he said above are not mutually exclusive. It looks like the staff needs to be more direct even if most kids get the hint.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:41 PM ^
If a kid says he hasn't heard squat from the staff in over 6 months, don't you think he or his coach would contact the staff to find out what the hell is going on? Something doesn't sound right.
January 25th, 2016 at 9:50 PM ^
Right. That's like not contacting a perspective employer after not hearing from them for a week after the second interview. You reach out to find out what's going on
