Quinn Nordin's 50 Yard FG Record

Submitted by UMAmaizinBlue on

We're all proud of Quinn and his monster leg for hitting two 50+ yard FGs against Florida, but once that happened everyone started throwing around the stat that he was the first Michigan kicker to hit two FGs of 50 yards or greater in a game.

However, this morning on the Michigan Insider a caller mentioned that Mike Lantry accomplished this same feat against Stanford in 1973. After a little research this appears to be true. Lantry hit a 50 yarder in the 2Q (then a Michigan record for longest FG) and then proceeded to break his own record with a 51 yarder later in the 2Q.

I figured we should give credit where credit is due. Not to take anything away from Quinn - he had a great first game and I'm excited for his future with Michigan - but Lantry deserves recognition for his performance as well (esp. since he's remembered for another less joyous reason).

So... Quinn Nordin is the first U of M player to kick two field goals, each 50 yards or greater, at an average distance of 51 yards or greater?

I thought that whenever this was mentioned, there was some qualifier on it like "as a freshman" or "in their first game". I don't remember hearing that he was the first to hit two 50-yarders in the same game.

With 2 50+ yarders in the same game WITHOUT the use of a tee!  Which is harder.  But then again, on the nice turf, it's easier.  Still this boy has a monster leg and will have a monster career.

GO BLUE!!

More favorable accomplishments recognized. He was quite a good kicker back when I was in high school. We used to get end zone tickets for $5.00 in 1972.

Im more interested in how many freshman kickers have kicked two or more 50 yarders in their FIRST game.

I cant imagine the list is that long if there even is a list. Nordin may be the first. I mean this is college. Most college teams are elated if their kicker can hit a 35 yarder half the time
