questions about last night's game
First--what a game. I've watched a lot of hockey (and I was at the '98 UND game @ Yost), but I don't know if I've ever watched a more exciting/nerve wracking game in my life. I do, however, have a couple questions about the game I was hoping someone in the mgocommunity could answer:
1) What were the students chanting at the end of the game during the handshake line? I was sitting in the 200 level opposite the M section, but I couldn't hear...
2) Who had the monster hit that took out the NoDak player? I looked on youtube and didn't find anything yet.
1. They were chanting Hunwick's name.
2. Glendenning put the hit on Nelson.
Any word on Nelson's condition? I hate to see injuries take place. It was a clean hit, but he slid awkwardly into the boards.
The word is that he could move his arms and legs but had lower back pain. They took him in to be safe. I agree, I hate seeing that stuff. Melrose summed it up perfectly though. Between whistles, we hate everything about you. But when things really matter, like a serious injury, we all hope for the best for eachother.
Thanks for the update.
Simply the best fans in sports
Thank you--I could have sworn they were chanting something longer/more involved than "Hunwick," but like I said: I couldn't hear it over the sound of the NoDak fans rushing to leave...............
"Shau-aun Hun-wick!" clap...clap...clapclapclap. "Shau-aun Hun-wick!" clap...clap...clapclapclap.
It sounded like at one point, the UM fans were chanting "racist mascot." Is that what you are referring to?
Edit: nevermind -- you clearly said "at the end of the game." I need to learn how to read.
Did happen at one point early in the game.
Drew some of the few smirks from the NoDak fans sitting near me for the game (I wasn't with the students) - aside from a couple of guys who got unnecessarily defensive.
[One of those guys also delivered a death threat to me for cheering for Michigan and openly questioned early in the game whether Michigan knew how to play hockey - to me, though, this was the exception for their fans, since most seemed pretty reasonable.]
Eh. Par for the course. Some guy got kicked out for stealing a sign in the 1st period. That was a failboat.
"Our midget goalie just stood on his head and sent you and your racist mascot back to the fridged hinterland that is North Dakota to ponder your continued failure to win a championship," Clap, clap, clap clap clap.
But I could be wrong.
You forgot the part in the cheer about North Dakota Nazis.
North Dakota Nazis?
I hate North Dakota Nazis.
Ralph Englestad
I hate Nazi Zombies more then I hate North Dakota Zombies
Those are the sneakiest kind of Nazis, I think.
At least it's an ethos.
My avatar couldn't have said it better himself.
Thank you for that.
Seriously.
Thank you.
From what Gary Thorne relayed, during the telecast, Nelson was taken to the hospital with lower back pain. It was a precautionary trip. He is expected to be OK.
I believe they were chanting 'it's all your fault' to the opposing goaltender.
^ it was great that the TV caught that chant, Melrose even mentioned it.
That was me doing the "It's all your fault" chant... highlight of alumni fan career to have Melrose point that out :).
About the internets. That was ME, and Melrose specifically mentioned ME yelling that out.
Man, people are always stealing my thunder.
As horrible as Melrose was, a couple of the chants got a laugh out of the announcing team.
Best part of the game for me was when Michigan scored and then would body check the glass right in front of the Sioux fans. It was especially nice after the empty netter when you could see a North Dakota fan all enraged, leaning forward and giving the Michigan players the finger.
He was rabid.
that was a different NoDak fan.
There was a LOT of Hunwick chants followed by even more "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!"
Those were the two main ones AFTER the game ended.
The ESPN camera guy was very amused by the "racist mascot" chant... laughed and called us mean. Apparently not television appropriate though.
Having someone laugh at you while calling you "mean" is an absolute high compliment.
I expect nothing less from our students at hockey games "Spouting off hilarious mean chants since the early 1990's"
There was also a Beat the Bulldogs chant. And then there was something about nazis as someone stated before.
