A question about if Marvin Robinson were to commit to Michigan
First of all, I would like to say that I don't care when he does it because I think that he'll end up blue sooner or later. But if he does commit before his senior season could a coach really get away with benching him for something like that? Robinson is a national prospect and I would think that the media would not take kindly to the coach.
Wouldn't surprise me if he did. Most Buckeye fans lack common sense. I lived in Columbus for a couple of years and have witnessed firsthand at how stupid those people really are.
His coach can do anything he wants, but if he benched Robinson for no reason at all, you would probably see a media backlash and - I would think - administrative intervention.

I haven't heard this one. The implication obviously being that M Rob's coach told him at some point that he would bench him if he committed to Michigan? Where did this info come from?
I can't give any specific sources but I can assure you that it's not something I just pulled out of my ass. I've read it quite a few times, I thought it was a pretty widely circulated rumor.
The popular theory going around is that M-Rob's coach is what is keeping him from being blue at the moment, or that he is, in fact, silently committed to keep his coach from finding out. This would suggest that his coach is doing something to discourage him from committing. Telling him he will bench him is one card he would hold, although I really doubt he would pull it because of the shitstorm it would bring on him if he did. Its not like Florida is full of OSU fans, and a coach making his team suffer because he doesn't like where one of his players is going to college would be fired and probably run out of town. It's much more likely he's trying to convince him that Michigan isn't the right place for him, or that he should really look into more schools before he makes his commitment.

FWIW, Rivals is reporting that he's committing in the next two or three weeks. Doesn't say where, obviously, but the quote about the time frame is followed up by him confirming that Michigan is his leader.

Any coach who doesn't support a player's preferences is not doing his duty as a teacher. For example, I hate OSU and MSU (in a schticky kind of way), but if a kid really wants to go to either school, he is still going to get an education, and I don't think a coach has any right to steer a kid away from any school. Most of all, it is his dream and a coach has no business trying to deprive a kid of his choice.
For years, the Catholic schools recruited the best of the best and then told them "if you're good enough, you might get to play for Notre Dame someday." ND won a lot of National Championships that way. Apparently, it isn't happening anymore. I would hope it isn't happening elsewhere, either.
I don't mind a coach giving a kid a little nudge, but there is a time when they need to back off, support the kid's decision, and wish him well.

an alum, or a former player? In any case, maybe RR and staff can talk to the douche, show him some love and explain that he and his staff are new to M, and want to build a relationship with him and the problem is solved.

i don't believe that robinson's coach would ever bench him for committing to M. marvin has to be the best player on their team and if his coach were to bench him like that a lot people would notice and a lot of those people would be pissed

If the coach does make such a selfish, bullheaded decision, I have to assume the players will revolt and support their teammate, with sleeper QB prospect Jon "Mox" Moxson leading the charge.
Wait - so people are getting all hard up about the coach because a yahoo on a message board posted a bullshit hypothetical?
Simple fact: if the the coach:
a) values his job
b) ever wants to have an elite talent play for him again
c) wants to retain any credibility with D-I Universities
he will play Robinson regardless of his college choice. I refuse to believe a guy is that monumentally stupid, which leads me to believe that the OP is...full of shit.

Again, there is a reason Marvin Robinson didn't publically commit when he visited for the MSU game last October, when everyone was expecting it. It's pretty easy to figure out why.
Let's be reasonable here, though - there's a big difference between encouraging a kid to consider all options (which he should do) and telling a kid that he'll be benched/disowned/whatever for choosing a certain school (which he shouldn't do).

Those two things don't necessarily have to be connected. Perhaps Marvin Robinson just wasn't comfortable with committing to Michigan 1.5 years before signing day.
He tried to commit to Lloyd Carr when he first showed up at camp two years ago. He "silently" committed to RR last October (hence all the inside reports of "a silent commit reaffirming that status" after this past weekend). It was after that MSU weekend in October (where EVERYONE expected him to go public) that it was learned that his coach is a Buckeye and may try to sabotage him - something the insiders at Rivals essentially confirmed.
If he was just trying to convince him to "explore other options", then this wouldn't even be an issue because M-Rob would already be openly committed, because he's been in love with Michigan for two years now. Pretty clear that there was something else going on behind the scenes.
In a perfect world, high school coaches show no agenda and no bias and present every opportunity to their players as best as they can. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. Coaches who have ties to certain schools very often try to steer their kids to those schools. There's a reason nobody who cheers for Michigan is getting any hopes up about William Gholston. And it's pretty much the same reason Marvin Robinson hasn't been publically committed to Michigan for six months now.
I'm not saying you're right or wrong. I just don't see a high school coach "sabotaging" his star player, because the coach holds very little leverage and it would just be ridiculous. There could very well be something else going on there, but I'm not prone to believing in conspiracy theories.
