Pure speculation/question about Threet/RR

Submitted by wolverine1987 on
Given that coaches do not actually have to grant a transfer (though they almost always do and should do) do you think that RR had a conversation with Threet where he tried to convince him to stay? Or, did he accept it straight out thinking (as some say) that although Threet is a gamer and has potential, that he would never really fit into the spread, and therefore it was best for M and Threet that he move on? I'm in the camp that says he would have tried to talk him out of it. As a coach, knowing that you cannot count on a freshman QB, particularly before even seeing him in an official practice, it would be short-sighted to encourage him to go. Speculative thoughts?

I'm sure he tried to talk him into staying. He tried to get Mallett to stay on three occasions, and he's in the same mold as Threet, albeit with a much, much, much, MUCH, stronger arm.

Threet may not fit in the spread that well, but RR would be ignorant to not try to convince him to stay. He has the most experience on the team at qb, and like you said with two freshman coming in you just dont know what they are going to do. In my opinion Threet was going to be the starter for at least the the first and second game. Threet would have been a major contributer to the quarterback possition this year, if not on the field at least on the sideline helping Forcier/Robinson adjust from high school to college ball

is a man of outstanding character and wisdom. No doubt, he would try to convince Threet to stay but, failing at that, would do the honorable thing and grant the transfer without hesitation. (See McGuffie's transfer for corroboration)
