Good idea. On top of the people that go out to watch games you also have NYE parties that a lot of people go to. Probably cut viewers in half because of that.

My wife and I were invited to our friend's (or should I say acquaintance) for their BIG MSU stomping of ALABAMA.  I had a glorious time.  Started with 50 people and after the third quarter there were only six left.  The host turned off the game with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.  I said "Wait, you still might score!!"  We are now shunned.

Your favorite team has been bitch slapped by MSU recently, including blowing a game because of a stupid running, catching, kicking sideways punter. They are in CFB's final four, while Michigan is playing in yet another insignificant bowl game that rewards mediocrity.

Since 2008, Michigan is 1-7 against MSU, losing by an average score of 28-15. The only time Michigan has beaten the Sparties in recent memory is because a soon to be expelled serial date rapist kicked four field goals.

In fact, Sparty has even been respectable against Ohio State since 2008, going 3-3 against them.

Wow, I can totally see why you sat there talking smack.

Think like a man. Never forget your anniversary? Check. One less night to play dress up? Check. File taxes at a lower rate for the whole year? I dunno, maybe? Check? As long as you pay for an open bar, I'm gonna allow it.

There are a lot of Dave Brandons running around who think that whatever ludicrous idea pops in their head is pure genius, and they'll just skillfully manipulate everyone into accepting it.

They surround themselves with yes-men who never tell them their idea is not divinely inspired, it's just stupid.

Yes we do.

Much as I like to bash Sparty, it had little to do with them.  People have been going out on NYE to events not condusive to watching a playoff game on TV for 100 years.

The CFP committee was delusional that they would "start a new tradition".

I'm a college football slut, and even I had other plans.

I would never have missed these games, but New Year's Eve is one of the very few holidays with a party that both my wife and I like to attend. It's a tradition we have with some friends who we don't see often outside of this one party. I'd have skipped the party if Michigan were playing, but other than that? Nope.

Derrick Henry scored a 1 yd TD to put Bama up 7-0.  MSU went three-and-out on the next possession.  Bama drove from their own 27 to the MSU 30 for a 47 FG w/ 1:25 left.

Sparty finally showed an offensive pulse on the ensuing possession, and drove to the Alabama 12 with 23 seconds left.  A chance to get back to within one (lucky) score, which considering MSU's offensive production, they desperately needed.  Connor Cook then proceeded to throw an INT into the end zone, and the game went into halftime with MSU down 10 points, a mountain of a deficit considering how MSU had been stifled offensively.

Alabama started the 3rd quarter with a 75 yard TD drive.  Game over.

The ball drop thing isn't the only alternative on that night.  Lot's of people throw or attend really fun parties with their friends and there is net less fun for CFB fans when they have to split their attention between engaging socially acitvity and watching the nearest tv with the game.  It's a dead weight loss.  It's like putting the Superbowl on Easter sunday.

No kidding. What this plan seems ideally suited to do is to create strife in those parties as people are checking their phones during dinner, sneaking away to watch the game and ignoring people who aren't interested in college football. It also sucks for the hosts who have to decide whether to have a tv on or not.
