PFF Team of the Week

Submitted by animalfarm84 on

No Wolverines on the national PFF Team of the Week this week, but the B1G Team of the Week includes Grant Newsome, Mason Cole, Ryan Glasgow, Chris Wormley, Rashan Gary, and Jabrill Peppers.

None of those inclusions is likely to be a surprise, but it's great to see Newsome and Gary show up on this list so soon into their careers (even though Newsome of course got into a number of games last year).

Still trying to figure out what NFL scouts see in Leidner that makes them think he is a first rounder.

I don't mean to bash Leidner too much. He will definitely get a shot to play on Sundays, but he's had a very, very meh college career (so far) on a very, very meh team. He also plays in a run first scheme that hasn't had a legitimate passing threat in years. So he hasn't he a boatload of opportunities to show what he can do.

I hope he proves me wrong, I have nothing against him and he absolutely balled out against Michigan last year, but I just don't see a first round talent when I look at him. I see a mid to late round gamble with low risk and some pretty good upside.

I'll be interested to see what the UFR says on Gary.  I'm guessing it'll be up and down -- I noticed 5 or 6 plays that looked like big negatives.  Mostly pass rush lane issue and loss of contain when optioned -- things that you would expect to be difficult for a first year player.

I was also a little surprised to see him often coasting when the play got past him; I'm guessing that will be another thing the staff will harp on him for, especially given that his speed allows him to be a really effective pursuit defender.  It's going to be fun to watch him develop over the next three years.

I agree -- pursuit is no problem on that play, though I have to imagine he's got contain responsibility for the RB there, so the gain is on him.  That play is one of the big negatives I recalled.  I would think that's a -2 on UFR -- Peppers saved it from being a 15-20 yard gain.

There are other examples of worse pursuit effort; we'll see if Brian raises it in the UFR.

Obviosuly, these are small caveats.  He looks great for a freshman, and these are easily fixable issues.

PFF loves our oline.

probably mostly due to pass pro.  that was the most striking improvement i saw last year from hoke years.  pass pro.

Don't know how much stock I put in their analysis.

How could they leave out Donnel Pumphrey of SDSU last week after he virtually ran over Cal with 281yds and 3 TDs. (shakes head in wonderment)
