PFF Compares Mich and OSU Position Groups

Submitted by sundaybluedysunday on

An excellent article over at Pro Football Focus today where they compare Michigan and Ohio State by position group. Michigan gets the edge in offensive skill talent, defensive line, linebackers, and the secondary, while Ohio State takes it at quarterback and offensive line.

My favorite stat from the whole thing: Ben Gedeon is their second ranked linebacker against the run in the entire country.

What a difference two years make, we have the edge in offensive skill players over Ohio State (based off of these stats at least)... who would've guessed that. Love it

Pretty much this.  I'm not worried anymore about this game.  I'm excited about it.

Remember that last year is likely going to be the worst team that Harbaugh will ever have at Michigan combined with Ohio State having one of the best college football teams in recent memory.  Yes, we got blown out.  No, I don't expect that result moving forward.

I get football boners all the time. Normally, it's because I play quarterback, and my wife plays center and snaps me the ball. She is naked while snapping, of course. And the ball is covered in lubes and oils and scented candles...

Ben Gedeon is their second ranked linebacker against the run in the entire country?

He might be the third best linebacker against the run in Michigan's starting lineup...

I still have a hard time considering Jabrill a linebacker, so he remains a hybrid spacebacker in my mind. That leaves two traditional linebackers: Gedeon and McCray. McCray has been good as well, but I have no doubt that Gedeon has been the better linebacker through 6 games.

And the stats back that up: 5 more solo tackles, 14 more assisted tackles, 3 more tackles for loss, and an extra 1/2 a sack.

I agree with the analysis on each of the position groups and which team has the edge.

Interestingly, they give Michigan the edge on all areas of the Defense:  DL, Linebackers and Secondary.  This should bode well in a game like this.

We just have to stop Barrett - and I believe we will!!!  Go Blue!!!

OSU has McMillan, yet somehow our LBs as a group are better than theirs?!  Just, WOW!  I never would have predicted that at the start of the season.

Seeing how the OL and Speight look coming out of the bye and how our defense handles Indiana is going to determine how I feel going into the game.  If we are still having trouble with edge rushers, which Illinois has, its going to be an issue to get anything going offensively against osu and we still haven't seen how we will hold up against a team going 3-4 wide with Clark out.  But both of those things can have positive answers and we have over a month to get them.

Barrett hasn't been very good under pressure, which is our greatest strength.

His advantage as a passer is on deep throws, which requires time in the pocket and separation on our DBs, which ... good luck on both of those. PFF has OSU only 8th in the Big Ten on pass blocking efficiency, with their tackles allowing pressures.

I'm worried about the mobile quarterback, but sleep soundly knowing Don Brown is up all night thinking about nothing else. Also nice that they rate Ben Gedeon second in the country against the run.
