Perspective

Submitted by greg788 on

After the Notre Dame game, most of the board was out with torches and pitchforks. Some of that was justified. I personally felt Michigan wasn't emotionally or mentally ready to play (including the coaching staff).

I'm seeing the opposite over-reactions now in all this glad handing. Suddenly the offensive line is a bulldozer.

Here's what I saw:

1. Nebraska 's defense line is undersized

2. Probably half of them have checked out already with the coaching change (Frost implied as much post game)

3. They failed to do the ONE thing that Michigan's O line has yet prove they can manage: the mayhem from twists, stunts and frequent linebacker blitzing. Instead they tried to play us straight up like Wisconsin / Iowa.

I'm happy to see we executed a relatively simple assignment. But by the end of the first quarter I was shaking my head and thinking, geez, Nebraska D coordinator, what are you thinking, your game plan just sucks and I'd hate to be a Nebraska fan right now

So, perspective is in order. We played our first complete game of the season. What matters is playing this type of complete game against the gauntlet we have to run in a few weeks ... we'll see ...

Everyone realizes who Nebraska is. They're 0-3, which includes a home loss to Troy.

That being said, Michigan won convincingly yesterday. - Something they failed to do against some pretty putrid competition in 2017.

We know Michigan won't be able to run for 6.3 yards per carry against OSU, MSU, Wisconsin, and likely PSU; but they won't have to.  Michigan has a stable of talent in the WR, TE, and QB positions.

We will learn more about the team this weekend, as they'll face a pretty stout front 7 of Northwestern. In the meantime, enjoy a dominating win over another Power 5 program.  Things are looking up.

You know, I love these posts trying to temper and mitigate statements that no one ever made. They provide "perspective" of a sort, although not the sort that they advertise.

Case in point:

Suddenly the offensive line is a bulldozer.

I think the problems that we all see have been well-documented, and while there was noted improvement yesterday (but there is much work yet to be done with this unit, to be sure), please show me where someone said this.

Anyone who thinks this game means our offense/OL is fixed after of this game is wrong.

Anyone who thinks our offense/OL hasn't vastly improved after this game is wrong.

We're better, potentially much better, on O than we were last year. Our run game still looks really good. Our QB, WR and OL play look much better. Much better than awful can be average or it can be good, we don't know.

How good are we? We don't know. ND tells us not as good as we're seeing/hoping right now. There are reasons to believe we're better than ND as well. How good are we? We'll know after Wisky/MSU/PSU.

I think it was a good win to help the team and especially OL get more confidence and game time experience. Sure, against a good DL they may still be jello but I'll take games like this any day if they help us improve. How many years in the past did OSU look like hot garbage against a team early in the season but by the time they get to the end of the season of various mediocre teams to build to the end, they are like a finely tuned machine. I like how our schedule lines up with bad and middling B1G teams to start and builds up even giving us two bad teams before OSU.

A) This is LITERALLY what the snowflake threads are for.

B) Yes, Nebraska quit, but so far the team has done what they did not do last year which is emphatically put away a bad opponent.

speaking of undersized, Michigan State's tackles were about 280 each.  That combination on their o-line last night was the first time they played together and there's no guarantee they'll play against Michigan but that doesn't seem ideal.

TCoB and come out healthy against NW and Maryland and let's see what we can do. Go Blue!

On one hand, you bring up some excellent points. It's a good idea to manage expectations with careful, performance-based analysis.

On the other hand, this is the greatest team in the history of football.

Correct. I’m glad you started this thread. Everyone else here including me thought Nebraska was good until now. We need more threads like these with useful info. Keep up the good work and don’t just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Let's repeat:

1. Don't schedule ND at night on the road to open a season, ever!

2. The team needs these wins to build momentum and team chemistry.

3. Best Northwestern.

A few weeks ago, the Northwestern game looked a bit scary.  A few wins later with noticeable signs of improvement, things look much less scary.

So, don’t best Northwestern, just beat them...like a dusty old rug.  Maybe they can have another second half implosion like they did against the Zips.

So you’re saying an 0-3 Nebraska team that got beat by Troy & has a freshman walk-on QB who sees a lot of playing time really isn’t that good?

Well fuck.

The problems that we all thought Nebraska would cause us were not a problem at all! That’s what we all should be excited about. Their defensive line caused havoc in their first 2 games even tho they lost. Looked good stopping the run and were racking up quite a few sack and qb hurries which is exactly what we were struggling at. We are making strides

I am taking the optimistic side of things.  I saw a better team annihilate a lesser team by 46, doing it in all three phases of the game.  Vegas had them as only an 18 point dog.  Not buying that Nebraska players quit before the Michigan game started.  I think they fully expected to come in and stand toe to toe with Michigan.  But then the man handling started, we went up 20-0 in a blink of an eye, and then they realized they were overmatched.  That's probably when they checked out of the game and we coasted to an easy victory.  In other words, Michigan forced Nebraska into that situation.  It's what good teams do.  And it gives me optimism going forward that we can win the more difficult games on our schedule.  Can we beat Alabama?  Probably not.  But I see no reason why we can't be the best in the B1G.

I think we are all to jaded at this point to think we are just going to roll into November with just one loss. Don’t get me wrong...I’ll take it if do...but October will be a TEST.

Best thing I can say about the Nebraska game is that it is good for the players confidence. I honestly think we could have hung 100 on them without much of a sweat.

I don’t think I ever saw a team check out after the first drive of the game before Saturday.

I signed in just to say this. I am so fucking sick and tired of threads titled "Perspective" by some sanctimonious shit that thinks they know better than everyone about what really happened. Every goddamn year we get 2-3 of these fucking things. Usually after a loss. If we have start dealing with these bullshit threads after wins now too I will burn this fucking blog to the ground and piss on the ashes. Fuck everyone that has ever made a thread titled "Perspective". I hope you stub your toe really hard every morning for the rest of your life. If it was up to me everyone that makes a "Perspective" thread would be auto-banned. I hope you have a shitty Monday.

Everyone else, have a good week.

This thread is showing an impressive use of italics and bold print. It's also another thread where more than half the replies are just to tell the OP what a load of shit this thread is.

Wonderful stuff--I'm guessing the parents of the Michigan graduates would be proud of their progeny if they were to read these replies. They'd be happy to know they didn't pay for their child to get that great M degree only to spend it doing something productive.

And when will people give up trying to call for perspective on a college football message board? Fans with perspective don't come to these places.
