I really don't think it sucks that much. I mean, what was he really going to do for us at this point in the season? He is supposed to be quite the ball player, but we haven't seen enough to know for sure if he is a game changer at this time.

He got some college experience under his belt. This season won't amount to much. All we can hope for is making a bowl game, possible Win vs Ohio St. and maybe a bowl victory. I highly doubt all three of those things can or would happen even if we did get Jabril back this week. Hopefully we can just make a bowl game, so the players can get 15 more practices.

Might as well, let him keep practicing for next year. Be able to start fresh and healthy %100.

As long as he can rehabilitate from his injury successfully, this is amazing.  This season was a wash and there's was no point in him really playing again and risking further injury for naught.  Now he's got a full 4 years, presumably under a new regime, to have an impact on this program.  Sucks for him in the the short term, but goddamn if that ain't might fine delayed gratification that will end up being in the best interest for all parties in the long run.

TBH, the "there's no point in him playing" perspective is a selfish fan's perspective.  If he can play and wants to play, he should play regardless of the team's record.

Also, if the redshirt is relevant (meaning Jabrill stays at Michigan 5 years), it probably means Jabrill has an underwhelming career.  Personally I'd prefer to see him take the superstar tragectory and leave for the NFL after three years, making the fifth year of eligibility a moot point.

If he pans out the way the #2 recruit in the country should though, I doubt he's going to be around for his a fifth season. He'll have already graduated and would be passing up Scrooge McDuck money. Hard to imagine he ever uses the extra eligibility.

Here's why I don't think it sucks.  I would rather see him take the time off and heal fully than get thrown in playing with a "boo boo" to try and save anyone's job.  The staff is still being honorable here.  I just want him to come back strong next year.

...it is a medical redshirt.  He can't take a regular redshirt, because he played this year.

The way it might matter down the road is that he could conceivably be awarded a sixth year if he missed most of another season due to injury.  He likely won't be on campus that long, though, so it probably won't be an issue.

I'm pretty sure, as this has been discussed often on this site, that a medical hardship waiver to extend eligability is not actually granted until that eligability is almost up.  Like UM filed Gardner's paperwork somewhere early 2011 I believe, but didn't get the medical redshirt granted until 2013, about two years later.  Eligability is extended at the end only if still needed.  However, with the quagmire of NCAA and conference rules, I could be mistaken.  I don't think I am though.

Medical redshirts really only come into play for granting a sixth year of elligibility.  You get your normal 4 to play 5, and a medical redshirt can grant a sixth year.  So technically, its a medical redshirt, but in all likelihood if it ever comes up it'll philosophically be more like a redshirt/5th year.

But in reality none of it really matters since Peppers probably won't be here four years let alone five or six.

A "medical redshirt" means a "medical hardship" under the rules.  It means that a year is not counted as a season of competition (you get 4) even though normally playing one down uses up one of those seasons.  If Peppers didn't get a medical redshirt, this would count as his first season of competition because he played in 2 games (ASU, Miami).

There is a separate waiver that can be sought of the 5 year rule but a "medical redshirt" normally refers to getting back a year where a player played in a few games then got hurt.

Not sure what you guys are getting out of what I wrote, but that's the same as what I said.  Medical redshirts/medical hardships don't matter at all until you've exhausted all of your other eligibility.  We went through this with Devin Gardner when there were questions on whether or not his medical hardship had been granted.  DG had redshirted one season before he got hurt and they went after a medical hardship for him.  But that would only kick in once he exhausted all of his other eligibility.

Maybe you're getting caught up on the whole philosophical thing.  My point with that is that before the medical hardship, Peppers had 4 years left to play 3 seasons.  Meaning he still could take a normal redshirt season.  But Peppers isn't going to redshirt because he's too damn good.  So Michigan was really only looking at the possibility of having him for a max of three more seasons of playing time.

With the medical hardship now a factor, that restores a full season of play for Peppers, meaning Michigan can now get a max of four more years out of Jabrill.  And because he won't be taking a normal redshirt season, philosophically this medical hardship waiver will make Jabrill -- if he's still here at that point -- the same as a fifth year senior that redshirted the normal route.

What part of what I said is wrong?  You get five years to play four seasons in college.  If you play any part of any game, that counts as a season.  Because Peppers played this season, he still had four years left to play three seasons.  But, because they are going to go after a medical hardship/redshirt for him, that restores a season for him.  So instead of four years to play three seasons, he's back to having five to play four.  He's essentially a member of the 2015 recruiting class now.

And again, none of this really matters because he'll likely never be around that long to make use of the extra years.

Goddamn people, if you're going to keep saying I'm wrong, please tell how I'm wrong.

EDIT: You know what?  Don't tell me how I'm wrong.  I'm so goddamn tired of explaining how redshirts work to people I really don't care anymore.  Believe whatever the hell you want.  Infinite eligibility for everyone.

A player could have played part of a season and still get a medical redshirt.  That's why a medical redshirt matters.  DG would not be playing this year if he didn't get a medical redshirt since he played in 2010.  DG played 5 seasons in 5 years.  If they let players take a regular redshirt even if they played 1/4 or 1/3 of the season (whatever the rule is) then every team would play all of their freshman in the first 3 or 4 games to see if someone might break out and be able to help them that year and still redshirt the rest.

to mess with the Press's collective "minds."

The OP did list Pepper, singular, so it's still possible Jabrill Peppers, plural, save us against the Bucks.
