Penn state recruiting

Submitted by Mgoczar on

M has been recruiting well under Harbaugh and even Hoke recruited well, but looking at Penn state they are doing well also. Is the an effect of winning / James Franklin or penn state always has recruited well when not mired in controversy etc? I mean want it big2 (M , OSU) and rest 8 back in the day ?

I know being negative is your “thing” but please name me those best players other than Winovich.

if you meant starters, I will accept Perry and probably Mone (but think he wouldn’t be starting if not for Soloman’s appendix and then injury.)

i laugh if you claim you thought Marshall or Watson would be anything other than depth players this year.  (I have been very impressed with Watson but doubt he would be at this level under Hoke’s staff.)

Have some pride in what you do.  Make sure you actually base your negative arguments on something approximating facts.

its year 4 since Hoke, so hard to point to many players when a good chunk of them have graduated

Hoke couldn't coach on Saturdays, but he was a very good recruiter...he was responsible for recruiting the class that had 11 NFL picks and 16 NFL contracts in total.

I acknowledge at least half of those guys were not NFL players until Harbaugh et al got their hands on them to coach them up... but the talent was there already

Have you guys been to PSU?  I drove by once 15 years ago or so. PSU is there with hotels and places to eat and nothing else.  It makes East Lasting look like a happening metro area.

Franklin black?  Who cares.  That would be the dumb reason to pick a school.  When I was 18 I would have looked at how the girls looked which is another dumb reason : )

I only cared about how quickly I estimated I could pay my loans back.

On Topic Time: This op reads as a 12 year old, or new to college football.  Penn State is the only decent addition we've had to the big ten in awhile.  Sure Nebraska, but they sort of imploded as soon as they joined the Big Ten.

Then the Sandusky trial which is starting to look like jaywalking compared to Nassar, cratered them temporarily, but honestly their recruiting during that time was even really good.  It was just the mass exodus of players and short bench which screwed them.

It didn't look that way until Joe Moorhead came in and had Saquon and McSorely to work with.  Let's see if they can maintain that planets-perfectly-aligned scenario.

No matter what, they are not going away.

We are going to be glad we have Sparty on the road (and not Penn State on the road) in the same seasons we have Ohio State on the road.

I think PSU has some great classes here and there.  They had some good ones in the late 90s and early to mid 2000's.  They obviously had a drop off during the scandal.  Lately it's picked back up which I think is partly a return to the norm, partly because of winning some big games, and partly because Franklin is a personable guy.  He's a player's coach.  But, they also tend to start their recruiting classes strong and fade a bit late.

Penn State is (was) a legit sleeping giant.  They have many of the same recruiting advantages that Ohio State does . . . the only legitimate major program in a talent local rich area - PA, NJ, DC area.

For years, they were sleepwalking.  Paterno would not even go visit recruits for a number of years.  They played boring football and had no identity.  Then came the sanctions.

They underachieved greatly vs. potential.

Now all of that is in the past.  Paterno is gone.  The sanctions are gone.  They play "modern" football.  They have an identity with the night white out games which they do to perfection.

Their recruiting is returning to where it should have been.

This is a direct threat to Michigan.

Our pipelines into NJ and the DC area have been picking up kids that would typically go to Penn State.  It is quite likely that if the recruiting battles were being held today, we would not get players like Peppers and Gary.

Michigan needs to get critical mass to the point where we are perceived as peer "local" program with Penn Sate in those areas.  We also need Maryland and perhaps even Rutgers to get a pulse and drain off some of the talent that would otherwise go to Penn State.

Being in the Big Ten East is the best thing that ever happened to us in terms of recruiting the east coast.  We need to stay there.

Agreed. Sure would help if they suck more and we could steal their recruits. I know its childish but it's better there is less competition for M picking up east coast recruits. For example, a lot of M graduates come from east coast (I suppose those who dont grt into princeton etc ) why cant recruit do the same ? Penn state is only OK academically.

Late hope M train starts in earnest this year and keep beating Penn State

From what I understand of your question, you are asking if Penn State's recruiting success is based on current wins or just being Penn State.

IMO, these are both correct. Penn State's name will ways be an advantage to produce an above average team, but the recent wins have certainly fortified this. They are a lot like Michigan in this respect.

And ultimately, whoever has the most consecutive winning seasons will have the advantage for the blue chip recruits as long as the winning continues.

Not that the other good schools won't have a good team, they just wont have quite as much elite talent and it will be up to the coaching staff to coach whatever recruits they have to that elite level.

Again, just my opinion, but it sounds good at the moment!

Just worry about Michigan winning. Whether or not the rest do super well is irrelevant—See Bama in a league that features similarly underperforming former good to great teams like Florida and ATM. Teams like Scar and Ole Miss and Miss State are solid but rarely going to be NC caliber.  Vandy can always be mediocre. As long as two or three teams in a conference are really good, then Michigan winning the Big will have hem in contention for NC.

In short, I would say yes. Michigan faultering (8-5 last year..unable to win big games) has killed their “magic”.

I don’t think Franklin is a better coach than JH. Nor do I think he is a better person. But he may be a better salesman. We will see how this year unfolds for both them and us. Franklin reminds me a lot of urban Meyer personality-wise. He’s a douche-nozel, but he can sell the snake-oil. They have a terrific campus, program, and stadium/facility. And they put kids in the nfl. And let’s face it...not all these kids are going to college to get that first class education. Simple ... as... that.
