Paul Schmidt out as football trainer, Pats' Granito in
Head football athletic trainer Paul Schmidt is out and transferrring to a new role. New England Patriots trainer David Granito will replace him.
Is this like off-season weight gain? All change is good change?
Per UM -- David Granito is new head football athletic trainer. Was athletic trainer with New England Patriots since 2002.

Bubble Butt?
+1 to you.
To be fair we had some pretty bad injury luck down the stretch last year. The S&C coach has far more to do with injury prevention than the trainer, however.
I am not sure about the Pats injuries but isn't that more related to the S&C coach, not the trainer?
... but how about the 3 Super Bowl Championships in that timeframe? I'll take it.
Or Rap Bubble Butt?
Sorry......lost my inner dialouge for a minute there
Edited....got a hold of myself
"...got a hold of myself"
Not sure if serious, but I laughed aloud at that one.
But really...a 14 yr gig at the top org in the NFL...how does this happen? What's granito's story?

That's a good point! What conspiracy did JMFH engage in that Sankey will have to outlaw, now? Was Granito on the way out with the Pats organization? What would make a 14-yr vet just opt for college? It'll be interesting to hear the inside story of how JMFH sold this...
Is Oakland in play?

Assistant to the trainer.

Happened under Barwis and Wellman as it will happen regardless of who the trainer is. The fact that these players are training more than ever, especially in the off season, injuries are going to be more frequent with more wear and tear on the body. There might be an argument that they are over training.

IIRC, Double-Posts happen...
My MGOBOARD S&C regiment. It's making my index finger too stiff and thus why I double click.
Any word on where Schmidt may wind up - internal new role or external? Wishing the best for him and his family.
Schmidt, per a Michigan spokesman, transitioned to the role of head athletic trainer/rehabilitation specialist in April
Do we get the Pats equipment managers too?
I'd like to have their QB too.
Oh, wait . . .
the new weight room etc?

I like having NFL experience at every position related to the football program.
I like it as well, and I would think that bringing on a former NFL trainer is the staff's way of taking "pro-style" to another level and tackling the term with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
I will show myself out. I mod the place, for eff sakes, I know the drill. *shuts door*
Schmitty has been a trainer at Michigan since the early 80s. Hopefully his next move is a long, fulfilling retirement.
The guy has been here a very long time and worked under Bo and the coaches that followed him as you pointed out. This is probably a transition for him into retirement. Well deserved too.
100% agree.
It may not have been the OP's intent, but the wording of the title—"Paul Schmidt out as football trainer"—is the language that is used when somebody has been fired or demoted, and there's no evidence that's what has happened.
We like to feel we are the 33rd NFL team. Maybe Granito doesnt realize we are actually a CFB team because nearly the entire staff has an NFL pedigree ?
Doc Brown has NFL experience?

NFLU being built brick by brick...
"nearly"
Very good for us. Schmidt was part of the whole concussion mess. He tended to Shane's leg and didn't even evaluate Morris' head injury that somehow only our sideline missed during the Minnesota game. I think this may have to do with some quiet house cleaning.
This is not punishment for the specific Shane Morris concussion situation. It is more about overall control. During the Morris incident, the entire medical staff proved that they could not be bullied. This may not be a popular opinion, but Harbaugh wants as much control as he can get and the medical staff he inherited was not willing to be pushed around. So medical staff with a more NFL style philosophy that aligns more closely with Harbaugh's objectives are being brought in.
I don't think Harbaugh plans to mis-use this increased control to jeopardize player health in any way, but I do think he wants more flexibility to push the envelope on medical related issues, especially on the administrative side of things.
Schmidt served as liason to the medical staff. The medical staff does not report to any of the coaches- it reports to an Associate AD. I think JH is more concerned about player health than most coaches in college football and doubt he wants to "push the envelope" and put a player at risk. Even if he did, after the Morris fiasco, I doubt very much that the medical staff would be amenable to pressure.
Thanks for correcting my terminology. But several people that have provided medical related services for the football team have left or been reassigned in the last 6 month or so. It is not a coincidence.
I'll take it. Anyone involved with the Pats knows a little somethin' somethin' about the game of football.
Detroit Lions get Pats scout guru as GM
Detroit Lions take Jake Rudock
Michigan Wolverines take Granito
Coincidence?
