Patterson - the possible nightmare scenario

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Just saw a discussion elsewhere about a nightmare scenario involving Shea Patterson. Let’s say we accept his transfer. (1) It’s a reasonable scenario that Brandon Peters transfers. It’s not much of a vote of confidence. (2) that means O’Korn plays the bowl (whatever) (3) we still have to wait and see if Patterson is cleared to play in 2018 which would require him to sue the NCAA Let’s say we take Patterson and the NCAA holds its ground and he has to sit 2018. (1) again, O’Korn plays bowl (2) Peters probably stil transfers as the legal battle will take time to play out and Peters probably doesn’t want to sit around and wait to find out. (3) McCaffrey is your starter in 2018 with two true freshmen as the only backups while Patterson sits. (4) 2019 sees McCaffrey a returning starter competing with Patterson coming off a year on the bench. If the Patterson thing comes to be, Jim should hold off accepting his transfer until he’s cleared to play 2018 through whatever legal means. Otherwise it’s a pretty big gamble that could seriously damage the program.

I doubt Patterson transfers at all if the NCAA holds that he has to sit.  He wants to play next year and then enter the draft.  He's not going anywhere where he has to sit.

You can bet if he transfers to Michigan, the NCAA will make him sit. Get the legal stuff done first, if he's cleared to play in 2018 then it's a great move.

We absolutely need a second viable option at QB outside of a RS freshman, given how Big Ten refs allow roughing Michigan QBs.

Why would he transfer? Patterson isn't going to be eligible next year, so why wouldn't he stick around to play next year? If after starting for a year he still thinks Patterson will take his job then he can transfer with much better credentials. I would think that McAffrey transferring would be more likely. Two solid QB's ahead of him means he's not seeing the field for years.

a) the Michigan fanbase literally has PTSD

b) on a more serious note, i've always wondered given the supreme importance of the position, that coaches must (and if not, why not?) try and get as man QBs to their school as physically possible.

From a sheer probability standpoint, and we certainly live in the age of big-data invading sports, I can't figure why you wouldn't.

People have lost their minds. How can you not want a higher rated player at the position UM has been horrendous at for year??? It boggles my mind. Especially since we all know Harbaugh wouldn’t guarantee anyone a job anyway. He could come in and Peters or DM could win the job. It would still be worth having him on the roster.

* usually only applies to seniors.

in this case as in others where schools recieve bowl/post season bans it depends on the length of the ban. if the ban would eliminate the player from ever seeing the post season then the NCAA usually allows the player to be eligible immediately. So for the two year ban of ole miss that could mean that shea could get a waiver and be eligible from day 1. this is where the back and forth then comes in casue adding him would make for a scenario where you now have a redshirt sophomore and true junior as your top two guys

The 2 years of the bowl ban are for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Since Patterson will be a junior next year he could stay at Ole Miss and play in a bowl game after the 2019 season. He isn't covered by the current ruling from the NCAA.

I have no idea why anyone thinks the NCAA would make an exception for him.

It makes no sense to assume Peters would transfer. He would have had to compete with WS next year anyway if he stuck around, with no guarantees of winning the starting job. Patterson would only be here a year. Peters is a redshirt freshman. You're inventing a problem here.

Speight didn't "get a handshake." He concluded that a transfer offers him the best chance of playing time next year to impress the pros and chose to leave. You can be sure that Harbaugh wishes he would return since, at a minimum,  he would provide valuable insurance in case of injury. With just BP, DM, two true freshmen and walkons our lack of depth is scary.

about this Patterson transfers in, there is a QB competition and Peters wins it because he is the better QB... why does everyone think that Patterson would just walk in and be named the starter???

The bowl game would be a chance for Peters to display his talents to all viewers, including other schools.  Why on earth would he transfer before the bowl game?

Here's a nightmare scenario: we don't take another QB because we think we have our next two guys. Then both these guys turn out to be busts and our program is handicapped for the better part of a decade.

Is that Harbaugh has an inherent issue with Peters quiet demeanor compared to himself as a QB and other Michigan QB's who were more vocal in the past. Shea brings some of that flair to the table while being a good QB. I don't think Peters has scratched the surface but in this scenario, if his "widdle feelings" are going to get hurt after averaging 97 yards passing per game while primarily handing off, he can leave (again in this hypothetical.) Good healthy QB competition is important for every school, you never want your starter feeling permanently entrenched, you want "the guy" knowing them performing at a high level means they will start each week, if Shea wants to come here and push Peters and McCaffrey for the QB job, let him do it, and may the best player start.

Put down the pipe!

Peters in the current #1 and has already taken a redshirt year. Leaving UM and taking another year off from game competition would be the dumbest thing ever.

Looking really good in a spread offense doesn't always translate to looking really good in a pro-style one. Maybe Patterson should get some practice reps before he is named the starter.
