Parking at UW?

Submitted by SpreadGuru on

Has anybody been there before?  Any details on parking?  Is there a proximity to the Gameday location?

There is a decent amount of parking, but as others have said, it's nothing like Ann Arbor where you have large lots (Pioneer, golf course, etc). It's mostly businesses, houses/apts, and other areas where people can cram cars in. Drive down Regent St from the east and look for people waving you in. Shouldn't be too difficult to find something relatively close (I parked at the Dean Health Care building the last time I drove to a game). Otherwise, you can roll the neighborhoods around the stadium and you'll find something.

I would not recommend parking down by the lake in the big lots. It's too far and requires a long walk or shuttle ride. You're better than that. Proximity is worth the extra $15-20 it'll cost.

I was at the Wisconsin-Maryland game a few weeks back. Their tailgating is NOTHING like A2. I got there about 2.5 hours before kickoff, paid $20 to park, and was maybe 3/4 of a mile away from the stadium. The walk to and from the stadium is pretty quick. And the drive out of there took less than 10 minutes... Again nothing like A2. Probably had to do with the parking being spread around the stadium rather than concentrated like A2. I parked at the Madison Surgery Center parking lot on Regents Street. Hope this helped a little bit!

I live about a mile from the stadium in the Vilas neighborhood. There is generally some street parking available until an hour or two before the game with spots closer to Regent St being taken first. If you don't want to walk, I would suggest one if the paid options closer to the stadium.

I’ll be parking cars at my grandma’s place at 1929 University Ave, about four blocks away. Bring me a maize and blue hat and some outerwear size M/L to borrow for the game and you park free (I was not expecting to still be in Madison so am unprepared). Hell just bring the energy and you park free. Show up early and let’s do this. 7 total spots available. GO BLUE!!

on Saturday, I just might take you up on that offer.

As of right now I'm pretty likely to stay home, but the lure of another game during a season of only 6 home games is mighty powerful. I've been monitoring StubHub ticket prices since Saturday; I'll likely make the decision by Thursday.

Road tripped to WI for a game in the early 90's.  We were young pups just getting started in our careers and had little $$.  Our tailgate consisted of a case of Miller Lite and a couple bags of chips.  Parked near a big group of WI fans.  Called us over after seeing our lame ass tailgate and treated us to a pre-game feast of BBQ and brauts.  We had a group of new friends.  As we headed off to the game and thanked them for the incredible hospitality, reminded us to come back after the game for round 2.  Only in the Midwest!!!!!

to Madison the only time I've been there, back in 1981. We drove in that morning, only brought beer and cold sandwiches and planned on tailgating out of the back hatch of my Plymouth Horizon TC-3. Some nearby Wisconsin fans saw our sad tailgate and invited us over to their feast: lots of bratwurst and snacks and unlimited beer; we finally stumbled into the stadium right at kick-off after massive consumption, courtesy of our new friends.

We've been there twice and both times we drove around the neighborhoods a couple blocks from Camp Randall.  Found some small apartment complexes that make residents move their cars on game days.  Good tailgating and only a few blocks away.

which now appears to be a parking garage (height limit of 7 feet).  Not sure they allow tailgating - so getting there early and meeting up with friends that live close to Madison.   The bar scene tailgate might be the way to go if we have 20mph winds !!!

I don't remember where, but we parked in a structure maybe near a medical campus or something?

Then we drank old style on someone's lawn.

And I was reminded of Ann Arbor's ill repute.

Then there were the free taters.

(2) park out by the hospital (up by the lake) and hoof it the 1 to 1.5 miles in.

The latter isn't a terrible option.  It's at least cheap ($5).  Sort of Wisconsin's equivalent of parking at the big lot all the way down Farm Lane at Michigan State.

Yikes. I'd definitely give yourself at least 3.5 if coming up on gameday. And do not take 94, as much of the traffic will be coming from Milwaukee. While it's not as bad as Ann Arbor on gameday, the 11 a.m. kickoff condenses all game traffice to a small window, so it's gonna be a mess. And with the shitty weather that's expected...

My wife and I are staying in a hotel south of town. Anyone know about the bar scene downtown on a game day morning? Will parking be available?

If you want to do gameday on state street there will be plenty of people down there but you'll have no trouble getting in anywhere or getting a drink. I believe you would be able to get into one of the ramps down there as well. You could walk to the stadium, but it's a bit of a hike.

As chitown said, the bars on State Street - which is what most refer to as "downtown" - will be up and running, and parking is easier because it's farther away. However, the bar scene nearer to the stadium in the Regent/Monroe area is where the crowds will be. UW is more of a beer garden/bar scene for gameday vs. tailgating, anyway. The 11 AM thing makes it less energetic, though.

What bar(s) might we expect to run into fellow Maize and Blue friends Friday night? Was given a list of bars to try downtown, but those are mostly based on beer selection.
