Over/under on dumb comments you expect to hear at games this year

Submitted by Sommy on

I don't go to many games (mostly because I believe that I am cursed, given my track record of games I've attended), but I've been to enough to know that there are some dumb memes that get batted around the stadium during the game.

I'm going to make a bet on the reappearance of the "Man, Max Martin really isn't getting many carries this year" meme that I caught wind of last year, which was particularly grating considering how many seasons ago Max Martin transferred.

What about you?

to the woman who sits in section 9, row 40 or so.  Last year she would go on and on about Tate's "accuracy."  I'm not a coach, but if you are going to pick one thing to harp on, why would it be that player's best quality?  It would be like criticizing Stonum for his straight-line speed or Kovacs for his tackling.

1.)  What the hell?  Is JT Turner back and now playing running back?

2.)  Gardner is playing linebacker also!?!  Man, that kid has talent.

99% of these comments will be completely correlated to duplicate numbers.  I remember hearing someone asking why Minor was on special teams last year when in reality it was Brandon Smith.  I cringed.

I don't get too down on people for that sort of thing. At least they know most of  the players numbers. Really, how many people attend the game knowing #5... and that's it? The answer is a lot. That's not dumb. Just... uninformed.

Dumb memes pop up all the time, though. Things that were said directly to me (because I don't have a chance to overhear) last year by people around me included:

"We gotta get some penetration and get to the quarterback!" - That would be true, if that hadn't just been an obvious 3rd and 1 running down where we sent nobody at all to rush the QB.

and

"Well, if we lose this game, that's it. He'll be fired right after."

I'm going with 0. People will be too stunned at the potency of this team to say anything at all. I look forward to hearing the clatter of 109,901 jaws hitting the concrete.

I expect a couple hundred retarded gems from announcers in regards to D-Rob not tying his shoes.  Again.

In the stadium, expect to hear "Rodriguez needs this win to save his job."  a few million times.

...the followers of the green greek boys from East Lansing never cease to amaze me.

I wonder if the idiots on TV will still say "Troy WOOLFORK" when talking about his injury.

I'm going to he MSU game, and there's usually a few Spartan stragglers in the section where I sit, so I'm going to assume that I will hear non stop dumbness. That is of course if I bring my Durpty-Durr to English translator along, in which case I'm sure these translations will appear:

"Har har, Dick Rod, har har"

"You're a Wal Mart Wolverine!"

"I got accepted into Michigan but chose MSU instead"

"My other seat cushion is a Trans Am"

"We're sweet in basketball, too!"

and somehow gets stuffed on the first few plays, just get ready for the stadium to collapse under the weight of "everyone knows Denard's going to run the ball" plaintive comments

Even as the offense jogs out onto the field, It will be difficult for me not to throw my popcorn at the dad who tells his 9 year old, "Oh... Denard's starting... so they're going to be running the ball..."   The guy who picks up this season where the last left off is bothersome.  As if offseason events hadn't occurred

My addition to this thread is not something that happens at the game, but after the game.  It is the voicemail I receive from my dad, which I always let go to voicemail, after a loss.  It usually goes something like, "wow, son, they sure sucked out there today...grumble..."  I hate that call.  My dad went to EMU though, so he doesn't "get it."  Plus, he's a natural born pessimist.  I can, however, avoid this voicemail if a certain team wins all of their games.

My personal "favorites"

"The spread is a gimmick offense"

"Our linemen are too small to play Big 10 football"

"We'd be winning if Dick Rod hadn't chased off all of our talent" (this is the most infuriating because it's so patently inaccurate)

***sigh***

At the end of the game during the rush of people towards the gates and the inevitable traffic jam a sorority sister said "OMG this is ridiculous its like such a fire hazard"

At the Purdue game last year there was a guy in front of me who was ranting about how the coaches weren't recruiting ANY players on defense, as in not a single one. Totally insane.

move Ray Roundtree to cornerback.  He was the fastest receiver they had last year!"

"They pulled Woolfork for a converted receiver?"

"Look for Tate to transfer when Devin Gardner starts."

"Why won't RR recruit any OL with any size?"

"Put in Minor and line it up in the I formation!!!"

Ugh it's always rough out there.
