Outback Bowl Open Thread

It looks like that safety might haunt MSU. 2-0 Georgia going into the 2nd quarter.

Great win for the B1G, getting swept in the 1 o'clock SEC v. B1G slate would've hurt everyone going forward. Need Wisconsin to pull a big one here, and then Michigan twice more and the B1G will be back to proper form.

As the MSU coach, Dantonio is now 1-4 in bowl games and 6-12 against ranked teams. This year he was 3-2 against ranked teams (first time north of .500 for him).

Maybe one that sits on a couch for the championship game of their league gets dominated by their little brother four a fourth straight time has no major road victories and goes to a BCS game. HahahHahahahahah

Haters gonna hate.

Gholston is going to be soooooo fired up to play u of m next year

1. MSU is giving up.

2. MSU can't win a bowl game.

3. Same old Spartans.

And on and on.

11-3, people with a 4th win over you. Beat us next year and then start talking.

It's not either/or.  Spartan are celebrating their much deserved bowl win, thank you very much.  Spartans also enjoy watching all the teeth gnashing of Wolvrerine posters who pretend they don't really care abouit MSU, but post more comments in this thread about the Outback Bowl than any other bowl thread today.  Appears the shoe is on the other foot regarding the little brother complex.

1)  MSU didn't give up - Georgia did.  UGa played scared and handed MSU the game.

2)  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

3)  MSU has done a nice job of stepping up to fill the void created by Michigan's and OSU's respective implosions.  Unfortunately for MSU, about 90% of the big plays that they made in that game were made by seniors or players not likely to return.  It will be interesting to see what they do next year.

  1. I want the Big 10 to win.
  2. Our rival is Ohio, not MSU. Would rather a MSU win than Ohio win.
  3. Too much focus on MSU here. When someone can say Michigan is their favorite team, and whoever is playing Sparty is their second favorite, well, that person is on the way to being Sparty.
  4. An MSU win looks better for Michigan. If the teams we lose to lose, it makes us look worse.
  5. I want the SEC to lose whenever possible.
  6. Did I say, I want the Big 10 to win?

Never have I seen such collective little-brotherism on display. Well done folks; your frequent use of the clever phrase "Sparty NO", your inability to effectively rip on Mark Dantonio at all, the obvious reversal of the state's little brother complex, and the delicious irony of you calling out a program that has bitch slapped you four years running was almost too much for me to handle as I read through all of this. Somehow I managed. Well done, and thanks for the terrific read. Can't wait to rub elbows with you intellectual giants in October for the 5-peat :)

Of course it chafes us that we played MSU so early in the season before we really hit our stride.  Things might have been different if we had played MSU later, but that is how the schedule shook out (MSU with bye week before, Toussaint injured, Denard staph infection, etc.).  MSU also narrowly beat OSU when OSU didn't have most of its offense suspended.

MSU has done a good job of capitalizing on the recent mediocrity in the B1G, but I don't know if it is sustainable for them.

As far as "Sparty No" goes, your QB threw a pick in OT.  That is not exactly a clutch performance, and should have been the game right there.  You guys were just lucky that UGA was even more dedicated to throwing away the game than MSU was.

January 2nd, 2012 at 8:02 PM ^

You speak as if MSU has played 10 games prior whereas you've played 5. Laughable. Had you played MSU later, the results would have been no different; if anything, it would have been more of a pounding. MSU was the better team in all phases that day. The only reason the game was ever in doubt was because of self-inflicted wounds. UM looked like a MAC team in comparison all game long.

Your QB throws more picks than any "high profile QB" I can ever remember. Should the phrase be switched to "Wolvie NO"? How about the decision by your genius O-Coordinator to run a PA on 4th and 1 against MSU, only to watch Denard get bodyslammed by J5? Wolvie NO!

Yawn. I've heard all of your tired excuses. You weren't complaining of luck when Ryan Mallet's fumble landed conveniently into Mike Hart's hands as he ran for a first down to begin the comeback against MSU 5 years ago. If not for that fortunate bounce, the streak would be 5 games.

Don't worry, 2012 will see that streak come to fruition.

January 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^

Actually, for a team that was implementing new schemes on both sides of the ball, there is a big difference between playing early and playing late.  In Denard's first six games he had 3 multi-interception games.  In his last six, he had none.  Once Denard and the OC got on the same page, things improved dramatically on offense.

You act as if Michigan wasn't even close against MSU.  The ill-fated 4th down play only happened because the previous play was spotted incorrectly.  It should have been first down going in for the tying score.  Late in the season Denard and Toussaint got healthy and things really clicked.

It is not just a coincidence that MSU has been playing well during a time when the dominant teams in the conference have been down (Michigan's rough transition during RR-era, MSU not playing OSU last year and playing a mostly suspended OSU team this year).  As Michigan's roster and coaching are returning to form, things will return to the way they are supposed to be - MSU winning 2 or threes times against Michigan per decade.  That begins next year.

January 2nd, 2012 at 11:09 PM ^

Is that the Internet record for most excuses in an openin two sentences? You guys know the rest of the league calls you "no excuses but...." hahaha.

Whatever junior best part about it is we play again next year Till then you can say "well we beat this team by 3 at he and you beat them on the road " or we were better in November even though we lost to Iowa" and all we can say is "we beat you,,,,,again"

Oh well we all have our cross to bare.

January 2nd, 2012 at 7:43 PM ^

Of course the difference is that the last four years are an anomaly that is unlikely to be repeated at any time in the near future.  Coming off of MSU's best two years in decades, recruits still prefer Michigan, as do the bowls.  When you guys are at your best, still nobody cares.

January 2nd, 2012 at 8:04 PM ^

Whatever helps you sleep at night brother. I really do love the excuses you guys come up with; never has a fanbase so eloquently spun losses into wins as yours has. Hell, you are even attempting to discredit a 4-game winning streak.

As shown by the past 5 years of the MD era, the continuity will reap benefits and the recruits and bowls will follow. Until then, we'll have to "settle" for 10 win seasons, beating your sorry asses in October and shots to win the Big Ten year in and year out. I'll send you a postcard when all the winning wears thin on me :)

January 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^

piss you off. And, to verify that many (not all) UM fans are jerks. And the ones who aren't total jerks are patronizing, nevertheless.

Yeah, yeah. "UM hadn't hit its stride yet." "MSU's success can't be sustained." And so on. How about beating us on the field. Until then, you've got nothing.

January 2nd, 2012 at 10:52 PM ^

Drew Stanton says "F U". Oh wait, they were cheering the sack for a really, really long time. How I forget.

Lewan deserved that punch; regardless, Big Will shouldn't have done it and he learned his lesson. Won't stop him from decapitating DRob next year though.

I love how "classless" is what MSU teams are accused of being now by our loving neighbors in AA. Used to be that you could point to some ridiculously long winning streak against us, or simply call us losers and be done with it. Now you have to resort to calling us "classless" because you really have nothing against us at all. Reminds me of when the MSU fanbase could only really bitch about Lloyd's classy handshakes post-losses. My, how the tides have turned :)
