OT/MLS Draft: Justin Meram Watch

Submitted by Thatguy2525 on

Just figured I would give us something else to look at today. It's the 2011 MLS Draft! If take a closer look, five out of the first ten are from Akron. I guess that's no suprise though.

Anyway let's hope our former Wolverine star gets drafted. That will be huge for soccer program if so. Go Justin Meram and GO BLUE!

I was going to post the same thing but thought "meh". I was watching live for a while til I realized I don't care about any of it except Meram, and watching Akron player after Akron player made me very angry about our loss to them

I've also been watching, and Justin Meram seems destined to drop into the second round although he had been projected as a first rounder. For any of you who were watching the Big Ten tournament, some familiar names have been taken, Will Bruin of Indiana, Corey Herzog of Penn State, and Rich Balchan of Indiana have all been drafted. But seeing how 5 of the first 8 picks were from Akron actually made me feel even better about how decently we fared against them in the College Cup.

How p[erfect would it be for him to spurn Columbus, play football for 1 year, hit the gw fg against the nuts and then go to another MLS team and haunt them for years.

That would be fun.

I went to HS with Justin and hope the best for him. He was a hell of a FG kicker too it's a damn shame the soccer coach wouldn't let him kick for Michigan this year.

...Justin Meram for being Michigan's second ever first round draft pick in the MLS SuperDraft.

MGoBlue.com story here.

Other Michigan players drafted by the MLS:

  • Mauro Fuzetti, 41st pick in 2010, Sporting Kansas City
  • Peri Marosevic, 5th pick in 2009, FC Dallas
  • Michael Holody, 59th pick in 2009, Colorado Rapids
  • Knox Cameron, 44th pick in 2005, Columbus Crew
  • Kevin Taylor, 25th pick in 2004, Colorado Rapids

Hey, hey lets not associate the Crew with OSU. I grew up near Columbus and am still a big Crew fan so I couldn't be happier with where Justin ended up. Also since the Crew is in the process of dumping half our team, Justin will likely get a good chance at playing time. We already got rid of our 2 best forwards from last year (Barros-Schelotto and Lenart, who was basically traded for Justin) and although we took Cunningham in the re-entry draft or whatever that was, I heard he is unlikely to actually sign a contract with us. As long as he can beat out Andres Medoza, Justin will likely start opposite Emilio Renteria.

(Of course, the Crew does not have a stellar draft history considering 1 of our 2 first round picks from last year was cut b/f the season even started, but that guy went to Notre Dame...our other first rounder played 3 games last year and I don't think injuries had anything to do with it...)
