OTish: Oversigning In Basketball

Submitted by CRex on
Source. So the OSU Basketball coach oversigns his class by one. The senior captain voluntary gives up his scholarship and will be paying tuition via money he saved up working odd jobs over the summer. I have to give the credit for really being a leader, he says he is doing this to help his teammates out, but I have to feel the coach is taking advantage of this kid's willingness to take one for the team.

But it depends on where the kid got his "odd jobs" and how much money they paid him.  For example, if he got paid 25K to "work" for T Boone Pickens, it would raise a few eyebrows.  If he worked in a tipped position at Southern Hills and someone let what he would be doing this year "slip," I'm sure the members would have been quite generous.

Sidorakis' sacrifice is a great story, but to me it raises more red flags about where he got his money than anything else.

I still don't understand how you can just oversign.  There are x amount of scholarships.  Except commitments until x scholarships are full.  What circumstance can justify taking more than what you have?
