OTish: College Football Awards open thread (featuring "Sad Michigan Fan")

Submitted by wahooverine on

Ashamed to be watching this and eating Chipotle instead of going to the gym but here I am.

First award of the night goes to Deshaun Watson with the Davey O' Brien National QB award.

Here are my observations so far:

1. Most Michigan Relevent:  There is a "student section" with jersey wearing college students standing up next to the side of the stage who high five the award winners as they exit stage right.  INCREDIBLY the bespectacled Michigan student, otherwise known on the internet as "Sad Michigan Fan" from the MSU game is FRONT AND CENTER wearing his Michigan hoodie.   He had to be invited right?  Not sure if funny or depressing.  Maybe deserves it's own OT thread.

2. ESPN is horrible at staging and broadcasting award ceremonies. The whole thing has a stilted awkward feel to it.

3. Chris Fowler is not good at award show comedy  (but is a good Gameday host). Lot's of awkward moments and silence during moments of scripted humor.

Edit: 4. Sam Ponder is hot.

Yeah, his commercials would've been much more entertaining to me if I knew he was hopped up on cocaine and a whole bunch of other drugs.

Come to think of it, that Shamwow guy also was arrested for drugs and beating up a hooker.  I'm noticing a trend here.

Tom Hackett from Utah won the Ray Guy award and his interview was pretty hilarious.

Fowler asked him about Aussie Football or "Footie" as they call it over there.  His reply "The main reason I'm playing this sport right now is cuz uhhh.. I'm fat and I don't like running very fast.   Running 20 yards on and 20 yards off is about all I got for ya".

If anyone doesn't know, the kid was interviewed on a segment for Game Day-  so he's definitely connected with ESPN now.

They showed how people are marketing T-shirts with him on it, and he doesn't get a cent for that.

Yeah, it was Paterno saying it, but I did chuckle:

"It's always nice to be interviewed by a guy from Ohio State who can speak English."

Also, Desmond King winning the Jim Thorpe Award - not shocked and well-deserved honestly.

More power to that kid. If it was me, there's no way I would show up to stuff like that. I can't stand being reminded of that game, and my reaction wasn't broadcasted on national television.

Sad Michigan fans have been easy to find around here, especially football fans. You would have thought they would be tired of seeing sad Michigan fans by now. Obviously Staee fans could never get tired of this.... I know I don't ever need to see another sad Michigan fan. Thats just piling on
