OT - Worst Living Artist or Band

Submitted by InterM on

Greetings fellow music fans,

In honor of Prince and the other great musicians claimed before their time so far in 2016, I'm wondering whether we should propose a trade with the Grim Reaper?  Not that I would be so crass as to wish something bad upon someone, just because they might suck at music or make noises that hurt my ears -- but, just for the sake of argument, if something just happened to befall a living artist or band, who would you choose?

To get the ball rolling, I'll suggest Rod Stewart.  And not because he is and always has been bad at music.  No, his greatest offense is that he proved himself capable of putting out very good songs early in his career, only to continually assault our ears for many, many years thereafter.

And now I open the floor to my fellow MGoBloggers.

Had the worse songs from the 70s. I cringed as a kid whenever his stupid songs came on the radio. Clint Holmes was just awful as well. I hated that song playground in my mind. Just awful 70s music.

David Soul was Hutch in Starsky & Hutch - about 2 days ago when this thread began I put up Baby Ima Want You by Bread as the worst shit ever, but David Soul would've disagreed strongly with that opinion as his music tried to emulate it. I will say though, I still smile when I recall a really cute girl asked me to rollerskate with her on Ladies Choice song to one of his...so he has a warm spot in my old heart.

Before Prince's death, a couple of months ago I had a conversation with my friends and I said "I hope Prince doesn't die any time soon because I don't want hear his terrible music on the radio for months on end". Now that he has passed, we are now cursed with his terrible music, playing over and over again on the radio.
So everyone who hates Prince, and I know there are many out there, you can blame me. I feel like I jinx'd it.
For the sake of this thread, Prince's music can stay dead. But In the words of Biggy, "I don't wish death on nobody, there ain't comin back from that" RIP Prince

OP that is an unwarranted hot take on Rod Stewart. South Park is a retrograde cultural virus that allows young people to form opinions without any context or appreciation of the subject matter. Rod Stewart has talent, even if his best song other than "Maggie" is a Tom Waits cover. I am not here to sing his praises, but he has more originality in the cuttings of his early 1990s Detlef Schrempf mullet than dudes like Justin Bieber could even imagine.

Have always thought The Offspring was always musically terrible which is hard for me to say because it's hard not to admire the lead singer who is quite the accomplished PhD student at USC I believe...

I don't know how to limit it to just one, so I'll have to do a top 3 worst singers ever. I judge music primarily on vocals first.

1. Robert Plant. Yeah I know LZ is loved, and I DO love the music, Page is a master of his craft, but Plant has zero vocal talent imo. He is a good performer, he is not a good singer. A terrible one actually, imo. LZ is like the best of one world paired with the worst of the other, but somehow it works together.  The best parts are just instrumental though, I could listen to Page shred for hours.

2. David Grohl. Despite his years of vocal training over the last couple decades, his voice remains mediocre at best. His early stuff is even worse. Add that to repetitive choruses and very basic song structures and you have a similar picture of Nickelback with worse vocal talent. He belongs on the drums. I compare it to Jordan trying baseball. On the drums, Grohl is one of the best.

3. Serj Tankian (System of a Down singer) - The one guy on the list who has actual vocal talent, but his horrible overuse of vibrato and runs makes it unlistenable to me. Some love that aspect of him, but it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Honorable mention: Brian Johnson

is criminally mistitled.  The title should be "Name a band or group that is, while maybe not made up of the greatest technical musicians and may have sold out to a music label on occasion, but still is clearly a very talented collection of musicians, singers, and/or songwriters, evidenced by the millions upon millions of people across the world and across cultures who will actually spend their money to buy the output of this group or band or to see the group or band perform in person, and yet, you really don't care for the band or group."

To title this thread "Worst Living Band or Artist" and then to include the Beatles fer chrissakes, U2, Springsteen, Steve Miller, Rush, etc.?   Come on.  You don't like 'em?  You're entitled.  But WORST?  Gimme a break.

That is IT man, that is Fuckin IT!!!! I said I was out after Robert Plant & Stevie Nicks names were dropped, but like an idiot I had to come back and see what inanity and insanity could possibly be added to this thread from Hell. But, Cumong Man, this is too much for a man to take, Goddammit!!!

GTFOff this blog if you dare come in with hate for A2's own Godfather of Punk, you sniveling know-nothing... I mean there have been blatant racists and homophobes, and even bucknuts and spartys on this blog that haven't gotten me this riled up!!!!

And Fuck any Stones "fan" that would boo Iggy off the stage too. I saw the reformed (surviving) Stooges a few years back, and even after so many years and so many drugs they killed!
