OT - Worst Living Artist or Band

Submitted by InterM on

Greetings fellow music fans,

In honor of Prince and the other great musicians claimed before their time so far in 2016, I'm wondering whether we should propose a trade with the Grim Reaper?  Not that I would be so crass as to wish something bad upon someone, just because they might suck at music or make noises that hurt my ears -- but, just for the sake of argument, if something just happened to befall a living artist or band, who would you choose?

To get the ball rolling, I'll suggest Rod Stewart.  And not because he is and always has been bad at music.  No, his greatest offense is that he proved himself capable of putting out very good songs early in his career, only to continually assault our ears for many, many years thereafter.

And now I open the floor to my fellow MGoBloggers.

I am not going to say he is the worlds’ worst living artist but Bruce Springsteen can fuck off any time now. I am getting sick to fucking death of him feeling compelled to torture my ears with some overly saccharin bullshit every time he walks by someone doing manual labor. I know he means well and that he believes hes trying to help but his music has all of the nuance of a high school freshman who just took their first political science course(see American Skin for the worst example of this in recorded music). You’ve suitably burnished your millionaire every man status, maybe just go back to writing songs about trading sex for shoes.

Bruce Springsteen WAS great at one time. He's much older and much less great now.

Same goes for his idol Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler and literally EVERY other artist who had the (mis)fortune to not die young. How Robert Plant still sounds so good is a topic between him and the devil, but he hasn't written any desert island must haves in a few decades either.

You're gonna get downvoted (and so far some upvotes too) but the most truly hateful thing you're likely to see is your own attitiude toward the proletariat and people who've been victimized.

Ask yourself a crucial question:

Why would someone using their heart, soul and yes, their bully pulpit to try to call attention to that make YOU so angry?!

I will say Dylan still has it to whatever degree he can be fucked enough to care on any particular night. If you see him now playing some of his new music you can tell he still has the same range he always had.

The reason I hate Springsteen is because it’s middle class white boy dilatant puffery. There is no authenticity to his music. When Joe Strummer sang about something there was a venom and a hatred for the political causes of injustice, with Springsteen it’s paternalistic sorrow. Also how does a supposed man of the people go by the nickname The Boss?

fortunately for The Boss, there are a lot of us middle class white boy dilatants (particularly from this region) who've been affected by the real world issues facing working class Americans that are rampant throughout Bruce's discography.

Inauthentic? tell that to someone who lost his job in the auto collapse.

Also, Wolverine Devotee shares your sentiment, so I know it's misguided.

we know Springsteen's discography is fundamentally dishonest. The working class is not the doe-in-the-lion's-den. It's a collection of human beings with  foibles and virtues like the rest of humanity.

You know who is affected by "real world problems"? Every single human being on earth. Being rich, white, black, male, female..et all does not make you immune from the trials and tribulations of life on this planet.

Torture your ears? He's rarely played on the radio (any of his new stuff), so if you're tired of him torturing your ears, I suggest you don't listen to him. Also, his nickname The Boss, he doesn't like being called. It was given to him and stuck. And no authenticity to his music? Have you ever heard My City of Ruins or The Rising about 9/11? I think that's pretty authentic, not to mention the hundreds of other songs that have true meanings.

Until yesterday I would have also said Prince.  I'm guessing he was a revolutionary and changed the funk genre, but I don't think his music has stood the test of time.  You have to appreciate it from a historical perspective and not from a do I actually enjoy listening to this right now perspective. Just one Koala's opinion. Nothing beats the sounds of koala mating season especially at night while watching the sun set.

With Pyromania and Hysteria both certified Diamond by the RIAA, Def Leppard is one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies each in the US.[11] The others are The BeatlesLed ZeppelinPink Floyd and Van Halen.[11]Both Pyromania and Hysteria feature in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[6][28]

But Kiss, Ted Nugent, and Van Halen all suck. I fully realize any of them possess more talent in their pinky finger than I will ever display, but I hate their sound, they can all disappear for all I care. Won't be missed. Not by me anyway, neg away.

Saying Nickelback is like saying you dislike getting punched. Of course, everybody does.

To stir the pot, I think AC/DC is absolute trash and only enjoy "If You Want Blood (You Got It)".
