OT: World Cup Thread / GERMANY HAS BEEN ELIMINATED

Submitted by Chuck Norris on

Matches later today (2 ET):

Switzerland vs. Costa Rica

Serbia vs. Brazil

As it stands currently, Brazil and Switzerland will advance. If Serbia can pull an upset, they'll advance. Plenty of intrigue.

Also, with a stunning 2-0 loss to South Korea this morning, Germany has failed to advance past the group stage for the first time ever. Sweden wins the group, with Mexico advancing in 2nd place despite being pasted 3-0 by Sweden today.

Dangit, Mexico. You had ONE job. Beat Sweden. With Korea pulling off the two stoppage time goals (which WHAT????), had Mexico beaten Sweden, Korea would have advanced.

Regardless, fun World Cup so far. Been only paying attention to Mexico, Argentina, Korea, Brazil, Germany, Spain, and Portugal. I guess that's a lot :)

Watching the end of the Germany game knowing that either Germany or Mexico would be eliminated was fun!  Now let's see if Brazil can get eliminated this afternoon!

The World Cup used to be my one and only time to really get engaged in watching soccer.  I must confess I would watch nervously when the US was in it and definitely got into the sport, at least for this brief window of time every four years.

But with us not playing it's very hard for me to give two shits about the outcomes.  It's like the dark years from 1999 through 2009 when Michigan didnt make the NCAA tourny.   I'm sure there was great basketball being played it's just I couldnt get excited to watch it cause my team wasnt playing.

It's certainly better when you have a horse in the race but the passion that flows in World Cup Soccer is second to none. It means so much to the players, the fans, the nations. It brings me a lot of joy to see so many other people joyous, I really get a great vibe from it. To see South Korea defeat Germany, to hear the commentators screaming, their fans rejoicing, heck it almost had me crying...

First off, I am no soccer fan.

With that out of the way, I've been watching and enjoying this World Cup. This morning though was something else! Sweden taking it to and out playing Mexico, South Korea doing everything to tie Germany and ending up scoring in extra time and winning 2-0, eliminating Germany who seemed to have the easiest path to the advancing of the three possible when the day started. The Mexican fans going crazy after their game, watching South Korea pull off the win.... great great stuff!

Germany's coach, Low, was absolutely terrible.  From the selection of the squad to the pre-tournament prep to his lineups, everything was a mess.  The team clearly missed Lahm and Schweinsteiger's leadership, and Khedira, Ozil, Meuller, and Neuer all had a subpar tournament.

Very disappointed  in how Germany played today. They choked. Nothing else to say.

I was hoping Brazil would lose, but alas Serbia cannot finish.

Interesting to see what happens with Marcelo’s injury. Big loss if he cannot play.

Thanks for posting this...I tried earlier but apparently I can't start threads any more.

Awful World Cup from Germany...lead for a total of 2:30 in three matches. 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

Germany is a team in transition, and I agree with other posters questioning why old guys like Khedira and Ozil were on the team at all, let alone why they were starters.

Said before the tournament in rooting for Belgium.  Still am!  Also rooted for the many upsets thus far and have been very entertained the last ~2 weeks!  Fun stuff.
