I agree, overall it's a relatively high payment, probably overpaying about 1 million each of the first two years then probably underpaying about $500K each of last two years but overall not a bad deal and the Wings certainly cannot afford to lose scorers at this point.  Would have rather seen 5 years at $24 Mil if they were going to do that.

I think they overpaid slightly to get a shorter term.  I think the way Holland wants to see things now is less the 47 year Zetterberg/Franzen deals, and more the here's a couple years and earn a better paycheck later if you can.

But compared to the Saad deal, this is a bargain.

Upvoted but... Datsyuk also started very slowly in his career in the playoffs as an undersized European type player who suddently didnt find the same space he didn in the regular season.  Now I am not comparing the two in other ways - one is a world class player and one is a very good regular season NHL player.   One just hopes he is closer to Pavel than to Jiri Hudler in career playoff impact.

That's a little bit higher than I think most were expecting. The term seems pretty good to me. Hopefully Nyquist can keep growing and developing his game.

I know people see that as a lot...but in today's NHL...its just not.

Ryan O'Reilly has had almost identical PPG stats as Gus in Gus' two NHL years and he makes 7mm a year. TJ Oshie is another who's about the exact same player statswise and he makes right about what Gus is going to. This is a fair deal that will be a steal if Gus goes to the next level somewhere during the course of it.

Ok but Saad is 6'1", 205 pounds, 22 years old, with great playoff performances

O'Reilly is 6'0", 210 pounds, 24 years old.

See the difference?

Edit: Overall, it's a reasonable signing but IMO it's full market rate, not really like the Wings got a bargain but they did wrap it an important piece to the team and a player that has a bright future.

Gus is relatively young and has something the Wings lack overall and a reason why they struggle with teams like TB... Speed. This is a steal.

He should continue to develop some, and that is a good price for a guy who can consistently score 55-60 points.  Would like to see him develop as a defensive player; that is where he has a lot of romm to improve.  With his strength on the puck and ability to skate, not unreasonable to see him becoming a very solid two-way guy.
