OT: What is the highest moment of your fandom?

Submitted by sarto1g on

We've got some time to kill before season previews start....

Good Friday, March 2013.  Drinking Bud heavies with my mom at a townie bar in the middle of nowhere.  Trey Burke hits the shot and Michigan subsequently beats Kansas in OT. A flurry of text messages and phone calls that dont say anything but AHHHHH.

So, what is your happiest sports moment?

Knew a friend in the athletic department who gave me awesome seats for the 2011 OSU game. 5 rows up at the 50 yard line with all of the recruits. Being on the field after the win was great.

Hard to pick one, but worth saying in retrospect that attending Michigan from '88 to '93 was very good fortune.  Excepting the rocket and Desmond getting tripped there was a lot of winning going on back then.  I guess if I had to pick it would be AC in '79 just because it taught a nine-year-old that anything is possible.

Removing sentimentality UTL 1 rises above.  The entire game was memorable.  So many unique details (pom poms, scoreboard not working, history, finish of course).  Yeah.  Damn that was fun.

I was there - it was sweet. Didn't want to leave the stadium.

I also was at the game in Columbus the previous year and had to go to a party afterwards... All I heard was Rex Kern, Jim Otis, Jack Tatum - they were going to kill us in Ann Arbor.

17 point underdogs at home! Ohio State unanimous No. 1 - They never trailed in a game all year, and everyone had written us off.

Chicago Tribune story lead after the game - "Someone forgot to tell Michigan that Ohio State was the greatest team of all times..."

Don't know if I will ever see another one like that one - 1998 Rose Bow (National Champions) was close.

The 1997 win over OSU.  The importance of the game, the last time Charles Woodson played at home, and the last game I saw in person with my father (he passed the following spring).

Hands down.

Greatest in person Michigan Fandom moment was the comeback against Virgina (and the Barber twins) back in 1995, my junior year.

I was attending law school at UCLA but never missed a game in 1997.  Just an amazing run lead by a transcendent talent.  Every game was better than the last.

Greatest Professional Sports moment was the Red Wings winning Game 4 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Championship and hoisting the Cup.  I worked in the Arena on game days.  That day, we took every old, discontinued item out of the back of the mechandising warehouse and put it in a stand outside of the arena.  They put me in charge of selling all of it.  Folks were in such a Wings frenzy, I sold every peice of that junk mid-way through the 2nd period.  They allowed me to watch the entire 3rd period from Standing Room in zone that McCarty scored the eventual game winner.  Literally have never experienced anything like it.

Highest fandom was 2004 vs Minnesota. It was my first game at the Big House and the comeback win topped off a great day. Other close ones would be Desmond diving for the catch when I was a kid, Fab 5 two NCAA tourneys, Braylon vs Michigan St, 1997 football season, NCAA run to game vs L'ville, 2006 vs OSU, and watching Chris Perry (same hometown as me) run wild his senior year!

Low point was the Punt Block. I thought losing to my alma mater in the Horror was bad because of the shit I had to here in NC but I had several friends call an hour or so after the punt block to make sure I was still alive!

season and 1998 Rose Bowl are obvious #1 but a few other moments seem to stand out. 2000 Orange Bowl v Bama, Braylonfest, NW slide FG in 2013 and Manningham v PSU.

Stayed the whole game. Got popcorn thrown at me for standing up and cheering when we were down. 5 rows up in the endzone that Tree caught the winning touchdown in. Lost my mind. Sang with the crowd after. It was fucking awesome.

Every time I hear that song, I automatically think of UTL I.

I forget that it was an actual song and not just something written specifically for UTLI, that's how much I associate it with that game.

Watching Ryan Leaf scramble to NOT get his snap off on time. My only trip to the Rose Bowl and during my 5th year of undergrad (after four 8-4 seasons). Winning the National Championship seemed almost an impossibility after so many years of mediocrity (obviously dated now!).

There is a close second in my heart and that was the 1992 Rose Bowl where Wheatley came through the middle of the Washington defense, their entire team trying to catch up with him while he pulls away. I only knew then Image result for Rose Bowl Wheatley Wolverines we were gonna win that damn Rose Bowl finally.

Best moment for me would have to be when we hired Jim Harbaugh. My first memories of Michigan football are from the '06 season, so most of the Michigan football I've known has been awful. I was really worried that another bad hire would see Michigan slip into mediocrity for another 15-20 years. Luckily, that's no longer something I'm worried about! Trey's shot against Kansas, and the subsequent title run are a close second. I actually listened to most of the game on the radio because I was heading to Florida for spring break with my family, and we got to the hotel room with about 10 minutes left. I've never cheered louder than when Trey's shot went in. Looking forward to more great memories being made!

1986 Michigan - Ohio State at Columbus, the "Harbaugh Guarantee" game.

My seat was at field level right near the Michigan band on temporary bleachers set up on the running track at the time.

Ohio State dominated the first half scoring 2 TDs to our 2 FGs.  But then in the second half Jamie Morris ran wild and we pulled ahead.  Harbaugh made the guarantee, but Jamie Morris was the one that backed it up.

Ohio State was driving to go ahead at the end of the game, but we stopped them on a third and medium out pass, just short of the 1st down.  They sent out Matt Frantz to try the game winning field goal.

Since my seat was right at ground level, I just walked right out on to the field to watch the kick from behind the play.   All eyes were on the kick attempt, nobody was paying any attention to me.

When he missed, I absolutely exploded and started to run up the field.  Then I caught myself and quickly ran back to my seat.  I was afraid that there might be some kind of "fan interference" penalty for being on the field that I didn't know about that would nullify the miss.  I wasn't taking any chances.

When the game was fully over, I ran out on to the middle of the field and danced on that weird block O they had in the center of the field that also made a 10, as in "Big 10".

After the game we walked around the campus.  Before the game, I was careful to keep my coat zipped over my Michigan sweatshirt.  But after the game, I didn't give a damn.

We were walking near some student housing when I heard a loud "Fuck Michigan!" and looked up just in time to see an entire beer keg come flying at me from a second floor window.

One of my best Michigan memories ever.

Brendan Morrison ended a long run of frustratingly close calls and OT heartbreak. Being there after following UM hockey for so long is to this day my greatest UM sports moment.
Being at the Rose Bowl in 1998 was a very close second.

After the Iowa game in 97 I realized no one was going to beat us.

The OSU game that year is brutal to re-watch, but it was the absolute peak of my Michigan fandom.

Tate's run against Notre Dame on 4th and 4(I think) is probably the single greatest moment of my life. I thought it was going to be a sure sign of things to come.
