OT: What do you do for a living? What do you drive? Social pressure?

Submitted by dupont circle on
Although my dad was in management for the Big 3, and we always had new nice cars, I've never been a car guy. Having lived in two major cities thus far after college, it seems like even my peers who said they'd never buy a car, period, let alone anything flashy, are caving. (Where did all these Audis and Land Rovers come from?) Mid to late 20s the el and Metro have officially stopped being acceptable, I guess. Amongst friends and especially at work there is this weird undercurrent to fit in or fit out, with regard to buying a luxury car or SUV. Also projecting a certain image.

1. School Counselor

2. 2011 Lexus CT (40+ mpg city/highway!!)

3. None, hence why I drive a hybrid hatchback.

Don't really care one way or the other about thread topics, but what is this all about anyway?

1. Insurance agent

2. Chevy Traverse

3. Live out in the sticks, not really an option to not have a vehicle. Had a car but needed an upgrade to haul hunting and fishing gear.

1. Utility billing

2. 2010 Ford Fusion (nicest car I've driven in decades)

3. Peer pressure?  Nah, I happily drove a Kia Rio for a few years.

1. Actuary

2. Cadillac CTS.  Bought it used at 2 years old, 25k miles on it.  Paid it off in 13 months.

3. "Actuary" and "social" are two words that do not go together very often.

So I picked not for fun-to-drive but for reliability and minimum cost to own over the whole lifetime (insurance, gas, repairs, etc.). My first car was a 1992 Toyota Camry that I drove for almost 19 years :) As I told my sister when she was looking, "Keep in mind I didn't choose my car to affirm my self-worth, flaunt my wealth, status or style, or display my desirability. I picked it to get me from Point A to Point B every day." Now, I'm a software engineer driving a 2005 Prius (my wife has the 2010 version for child transportation). As to peer pressure, nope, not even when I was younger. It frustrated my parents to no end, but life is way too short to spend any of it apologizing for what you like and dislike.

1.  Fly FIshing Guide  2.  2011 Ford F150 Supercrew  3.  Not really...  I use my truck for work; and it doesn't hurt to have a nice clean rig for my clients to ride in.

1. I get paid to eat lemons and crap buckeyes.

2. On rainy days I drive a 4Runner. On sunny days a Sky Redline. On days when my wife isn't looking I drive her '59 Austin Healey Sprite.

3. Somewhere around 40 social pressure became less significant and trying to find a plan to put two kids through schools an retire someday took precedent. I don't much care what the Joneses are doing. We have friends without cars and friends that own Lamborghinis.

1. Preschool Director 2. Volvo C70 3. No

1. Preschool Director
2. Volvo C70 convertible
3. Made a deal with wife that I would get rid of the family '62 Tempest convertible sitting unmoving in the garage in return for family consent to buy unpractical car, since enough practical cars already in family. I wanted convertible, front wheel drive, reliable to buy used. That = Volvo. Still haven't parted with the relic yet.

1. Great SUPER HIGH paying job

2. Oh wow, absolutely the nicest Rover you can buy, of course I have no family and I'm not very outdoorsy.

3. Oh no pressure, I don't care what others think of me. That should be obvious.

I'm a co-owner of a small edtech company, my wife is a dentist.

I drive an 08 4Runner and freaking love it, bought it CPO and best thing I've ever owned. I'll drive it till the wheels fall off. My wife drives an 05 Accord that has low miles but beat to crap with dings and dents and bad paint.

Couldn't care less what people think, if what I drive mattered to them they probably wouldn't be a part of my life.

That being said, my next car will be a Tesla.

Car guys don't drive audis and land rovers (unless they're pre-1990). Car guys drive weird rare things that don't usually work and don't care what you think about their tiny impractical underpowered death trap.

1. Male prostitute (see my avatar). Before that I was a WW1 fighter pilot. Chicks dig it. 2. 2010 Toyota Tacoma. 3. No. I'm not 12, plus consensus makes me suspicious. I never went for the Hammer Pants, Lance bracelet or social media either (except for MGoBlog of course).
