OT: What are your favorite Android apps?

Submitted by Braylon1 on

Thread title is self explanatory, but I'd appreciate your contribution. I tend to be pretty busy, and have little time to catch up on all the fun/useful apps on the android market.

For Exchange, I really like Nine.

For podcasts, I find Pocket Casts to be best.

For calendar, I use the beta version of Sunrise, which has Exchange write capacity.

Todoist for tasks.

Play Music is my preferred music app because I have the All Access subscription.

Yahoo Weather is the prettiest weather app I've found.

Beautiful Widgets is great for home screen widgets, especially for having clock and weather displayed with configurable shortcuts.

Chrome for browser if you use Chrome on anything else.

Tapatalk is great for forum reading.

Waves is my favorite instrument tuner.

And MGoBlog is my most used app.

-DU Battery Saver is a great app too. I'll check out Battery Doctor and see which one I prefer.

-Smash Hit for gaming

-MX Player for playing various types of media files

An amazing keyboard that learns from your texting, they have a trial version so you can try it out. I've had it for years and recommend it to anyone with an Android phone.

Agent- Has a couple really awesome functions you can customize such as automatically detecting when you're driving and either reading out the full messages and who its from or autmatically replying to calls/texts with an "I'm driving, I'll call/text you when I can" message, along with Battery conservation when you get low to automatically shut off some functions you choose, GPS based parking reminder, and a sleep mode to only let calls or text from certain contacts get through at certain times of day.

AirDroid-Lets you read and answer texts straight from your computer instead of needing you phone nearby at all times as long as they are on the same wifi.

WiFi Mouse-Let's you use your phone as a mouse with quite a few really good features. Useful for presenations too.

Last but certainly not least:

IR Remote-I no longer need to use or buy any remote for a cable box or a TV. The only caveat with this app is that your phone needs to have a IR blaster as a part of it (I know that the Smasung Galaxy S4 and S5 have one, but the S3 and many older models don't have one). This app is awesome though and I highly reccommend trying it out. It has a database of most TV's and cable brands, so you can also use it when over at a buddy's house when he really wants to watch the MSU game, but Michigan is on and It's Michigan Fergodsakes!

Has the IR Remote on it.  Love it.  I find it much easier to use my phone for channel surfing as it pulls actual movie posters when scrolling through movies and shows a small red bar below the art to show you how far into a movie or TV show that is currently airing.  You can also set it up to only show the channels you have and do it for multiple TVs.  Even connects to the soundbar for turning volume up and down.

Is nice.

If you want to learn a lot about Android ...
ES File Explorer. Great file manager with built in media players.
Terminal Emulator. I use shell commands all the time.
Root using TowelRoot and manage using SuperSU manager.

For fun apps ...
If you have IR, the Smart Remote app is awesome.
Watch ESPN. Awesome especially on a tablet.
Pandora or Milk Music if you use a Samsung.
And I think the best browser is chrome.

Pandora

SoundHound

MGoBlog

Map My Ride

SportsCenter

I do enjoy Bands in Town as well to track artists you like.  It typically does a pretty good job of alerting you of bands you like or similar bands to bands you like that will be playing around your location.

good for a certain subset of humanity that doesn't want to fidget with their phone. But if you're into really configuring, experimenting, playing, I think that the Android experience--after living with both--is more fun. I think that Android has completely caught up with Apple in terms of dependability, so that you really have to fetishize the Apple thing to declare it better. I recently sold my HTC One, with its incredible music possibilities, for a Moto X, which I think is the current most dynamic and useful phone on the market.

You enjoy overpaying for an admittedly nice piece of hardware and WANT to to be locked into a walled garden device with basically no ability to customize or consume what you want in a format you want without paying through the nose.

This is why I just bought a OnePlus One. In a word. Awesome.

I've been on the forums for over two months. Another early supporter gave me one, but mine should be coming and I should get 3 to share as well at some point. I don't know if I know enough people who actually want one though.

I'm a phone junkie. I've always had a least one Android phone since the original G1. There are too many great Android apps to list but I'd suggest any enthusiast or someone just looking for highly recommeded apps check out the weekly App Appreciation thread over on Reddit. Always some excellent suggetions depending on what you're looking for.

I try to find useful apps that automate every day things and cost little or nothing. Generally, they're apps that require set up and time up front, but after the setup, I forget they're running.

- WiFi Toggler
- Timerific (a poor man's Tasker. You can set time and/or location triggers to toggle things on/off. I use it to silence my phone at times when I know I'll want it silent. Or turn on Bluetooth when I know I'll need it, turn it off when I don't. There's more to it, but that's what I use it for. Pretty crappy UI, but it works.)
- SkipLock. Allows you to bypass the password for unlocking the phone when you're connected to a Bluetooth or WiFi network.
-AcDisplay. This basically simulates the active notifications on the Moto X. Really useful.

Moving to more everyday apps I use:
- EvolveSMS for texting.
- I've used the United, Delta, and AA apps and I've found United's to be the best, with Delta a close second.
- ES File Explorer is great.
- Dashclock widget.
- CamScanner is really useful for scanning/emailing receipts for when I submit expense reports for work travel.
- PF Voicemail+ for visual voicemail.
- Ready (beta) as a dialer.
- Play Music because I have All Access.

I have a Nexus 5 btw. Absolutely love Android.

I took a trip to New Jersey last weekend and one to Grand Rapids this weekend. I swear every car on the shoulder of the road, construction zone, and police officer came up. I am sold. Also seems to give good routes. I haven't had to have it redirect me around traffic jams personally but have heard it's great for this also.

I use Nova Launcher to customize my screen, app drawer, etc... swiftkey for keyboard and luxx icon pack for customizing my icons.

I keep things simple, but use the hell out of google drive, google keep (a must), spotify, skype, mgoblog, around me and google now (customize news/events thats important to you).

I'm starting to get familiar with Pocket, which seems to be nice.

Id like to find a few more games and podcast

posting the thread, Braylon 1---I'm in the market for a new Android phone after having a major "oops" with my Moto Atrix HD and needing to replace it this week.  Your request for advice was answered by many with some really great suggestions for apps and even some comments that might point me in the right direction as I narrow down possible phone choices.

As it is (at this hour of the early morning), I'm more or less "bookmarking" this thread for future reference.  While I'm here, though, a useful app I've not noticed on a quick trip through this thread is the GasBuddy app.  I'd estimate that I save about $15-20/month ($200/year) more during football season) using this app; while not a ton of $$$ in the total budget, I prefer to look at it as being 3 free months each year of smart phone usage.
