OT: Warren worthy of a 7th rounder?

Submitted by itsallgood65 on
What do you guys think about the Lions using one of their 7th rounders to grab Warren? It seems to me that it would be a great value pick even with the Lions already taking a DB in this draft...

i am shocked to see soooo many CB's picked before DWarren. Why? Was he so grossly mis-lead by people when he was considering leaving early for the NFL? Right now I imagine he is strongly second-guessing leaving. I am trying hard not to dwell on what could have been at UM with T-Wolf and DWarren, but damn damn damn. Back to my original question, must he have been grossly mis-lead? What round was he thinking he could have gone when he made his decision, and who in the hell made him believe that. This smells bad. (edit): smells bad, like freep-bad. i'm not sayin', i'm just sayin. is there any limit to what factions can pull off? i'm beginning to think not....

He didn't even wait to get a free report from the advisory board before declaring. Or maybe I should rephrase it as: DW misled himself. Sad. I like him. Going for your dream (playing in the NFL) can cloud one's own judgment. That's why it's best to have someone else give you advice (e.g., advisory board)

Yeah, Jordan Pugh just got selected. I've watched the entire careers of both Pugh and Warren. Warren has significantly more upside than Pugh. Another data point in favor of off the field stuff.

Agree about the coaching and position changes. And to be fair, Pugh was hung out to dry a lot by the general weakness of the Aggie defense the last three or so years. I really like Pugh as a sixth rounder. He's a high effort guy who will be a good special teams guy and can be a backup for two different positions (CB/S). I can't see him as a starter in the NFL though. On the other hand, I still think that Warren has the raw talent to be at least an average starter in the NFL. It's looking increasingly unlikely that ever will happen. I'd love to see someone like the Patriots take a chance on him. And definitely, GigEm!

With Rolle off the board, I almost hope the Texans take Warren. I haven't been huge on Warren as a NFL CB. He's got potential, but the mental side I've had questions about. We've already got another CB, so he wouldn't be bad to take a card on in the 7th for depth options.

There is no reason that the Lions shouldn't draft Warren. Except, of course, that they are the Lions. If he can't see the field on that team, he made the wrong decision to leave early.

So if the Lions don't take him then they are stupid and being the typical Lions? What about every other team that has passed on him?

cjpops

Yes - the Lions are stupid not to take him, especially with their clear need in the defensive backfield. Hell, they picked Speivey in Round 3 with the clear intent for him to only contribute on special teams initially and "compete" for playing time on defense. I would think that Warren can at least to that. I can't speak for others since I don't really follow other NFL teams. I think that Donovan would make a solid NFL player. Without a DOUBT he's good enough for the Lions pathetic roster.

1) What rant? I posted an opinion and supported it with a few words. 2) All I was saying is that Warren can contribute to the Lions. You don't agree? Which way do you want it? Am I stupid for not agreeing with the draft strategy of Detroit? Pardon me for being cynical after 34 years of fandom of that franchise. I'm stupid for thinking that Warren is a good player? You wouldn't want him on the UM squad for this Fall? Are you dismissing him as a player because of a slow 40 time at the combine? What about all the quality football he played for UM this past year? What about all the crying/hoping/wishing on this blog for him to return to UM for his Senior year? Is everyone who called for him to stay at UM stupid now? I'm a homer because I want a kid from UM - who happens to be a good football player, by the way - to get a shot at the NFL? Well, excuse me for wishing well to those from my alma mater. I guess that's a good reason to neg a post.

They played against the same talent and Warren played much better. Warren is a 1st or 2nd team all-big ten and the other guy is an honorable mention who has 2 career picks, and had 6 pass break ups last year. Warren had four picks last year and 11 pass break ups. When one kid plays better against the same teams, I would pick him. The logic of so many teams putting so much into a 40 time is so stupid

One school of thought is that when you get into the 7th round you are arguably better off as an undrafted free agent. The money isn't that different and you have some say in where you go.

I believe the free agents get something upfront, and the 7th round bonus isn't that much. It really is a case of being able to pick the team you think you have the best chance with. The most important thing by far is being able to stick on a roster and making the league minimum as a roster player, and the chance to practice and improve.

Some draft picks are never even signed by teams that drafted them because once they get to camp, the team realizes that they made a mistake. Some FAs get better contracts than 7th rounders. So, yes, because getting drafted does not necessarily ensure money, it's probably better to be a FA than a 7th round pick

Something like that. With Owen Daniels going down mid season, and the uncertainty in whether or not we'll resign him, they're taking their chances I guess. I don't understand it, but it should make for some good banter when I go back to work in August.

Only 30 picks to go. 3 CBs in a row have been taken. Someone has to take him. ESPN does have him as the best corner remaining and Minor as the #4 RB. I'm surprised that Blair White hasn't been picked yet too.

I'm not, given the (controversial, yet very real) bias against white players at the skill positions. It didn't appear to affect Gerhardt too badly. Of course, Gerhardt had the advantage of being high profile enough that the issue was brought up with respect to him pretty frequently over the past couple weeks. And Jordan Shipley went in the 3rd round, but he had the advantage of being from U-Texas. White, on the other hand, is from a smaller program and far fewer people know his name.

This is a tweet i thought was funny from the Senior Writer at yahoo sports...Ohio State has had 1 player drafted. Crazy. & whoever advised Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren to go pro is an utter idiot.

Texans pass on him. Bengals and Redskins won't take him, so he's not going in the next couple picks. Hopefully the Packers take him at 230.

Whoever was giving him advice needs to have his ass kicked. The dude leaves early in what appears to be the deepest draft for CB's in recent memory.

Now I would rather see him not get drafted and go find a team that fits his talents as a free agent. Just a theory..... could his jump this year have something to do with his not totally buying into RR and the new defensive system? Discus...
