OT: Ward 8
First off, I would like to note that though I've prefaced this OT, I don't believe alcohol should be OT on this board. Hell if we don't love our boozahol.
Anyhow, I think I've found the perfect drink.
I have a poster up in my kitchen. It is old... old. I think it was originally a place mat at a bar somewhere or something. It's kind of wood-grain, and it has cocktail suggestions on it, with a neat little drawing of each. I found it taped to the inside of a cupboard door in the garage of the family cabin on Long Lake near Reading, MI, and it is at least as old as when the garage WAS the cabin, which is at least 60 years and four owners ago. Probablky more.
Anyhow, I occasionally make one of the drinks off of this thing, because it has the recipies on it, too. Tonight I made a "Ward 8". Actually, 3 Ward 8's. I've not heard of this drink before.
1 and 1/4 oz lemon juice
1 tsp sugar
dash grenadine
1 jigger rye or bourbon (I used bourbon. No rye on hand)
Claret Wine
Shake all ingredients together with ice and pour unstrained into a 10 oz glass. Top off with Claret wine.
WHOO! Good stuff.
Thought you'd like to know.

Don't shake too hard or the ice will bruise and little bits will flake off.

Correct. But my steadfast rule is this: If it is all alcohol, I stir. If it's got other stuff, I shake.

What the hell do I know, anyway? I've never had a drink of alcohol in my life. I read that in a magazine somewhere. Taking advice from me about drinking is like taking advice from Alex Mitchell on losing weight.

No booze at all? Is it religious, or an age thing? That's cool either way. Honestly, it's expensive and it only seems like it's worth it AFTER the drink.
That said, it is SOOOO good.

It's a "People do moronic things when they're drunk, and I don't want to pay the same price" thing.
Also, I am in tip-top physical condition, and the slightest imperfection in my diet could ruin my Matthew McConaughey-like physique.

Bah! Three days after I married my wife, I had more wine in one night than I've ever had in my entire life, during an 8 course meal on the Celebrity Century with a wine specially paired with each course, and my wife is hotter than Sarah Jessica Parker!
Actually, good on you. The most embarassing thing I've ever done when drunk (I am a little bit drunk now, FWIW) is tip wayyyy too much to the nice people at the Murano. But alcoholism is crippling and hideous, and if you fear you are at risk, it is definitely good to avoid it at all costs.
However, it does mean you'll have to drink O'Douls at the MGoTailgate.

about not drinking.

what gave it away? the sarcasm laced physique comment?

I was serious about not drinking.
I was joking about being in tip-top physical condition.

It's a "People do moronic things when they're drunk, and I don't want to pay the same price" thing. The way I figure it, I do enough moronic things when I'm sober, at least being drunk gives my somewhat of an excuse, or if they are drunk they might not remember.

come up with your best predictions for the freep's headline tomorrow

"S.E. Michigan man enjoys Thursday evening cocktail"?
Kinda weak, as far as the Freep goes.

A new thread within a thread? I think you need a drink!

Never heard of a ward 8 but my favorite mixed drink site drinkmixer.com has a recipe. However, it is slightly different than the one you have. Thanks for the recipe and look forward to adding more to my list of drinks to try.

Joke: Correct me if I am wrong but isn't claret wine the same thing as Grey Goose?
February 19th, 2010 at 10:24 AM ^
Only on nights you don't have to get up for work the next day.

I was playing on claret = clarett (Maurice). Probably just a bad joke on my part though.

When I saw the topic DC Councilman /former Mayor Marion Barry was the first thing that came to mind. He he's based in Ward 8 here in DC and was recently accused of corruption by the rest of the city council.
This on the heels of jail time for tax evasion, cocaine possession, and an incident in a DC park a few years back in which he was stalking his girlfriend and found by the police with a suspicious white powder on his upper lip.

Umm... yeah. Not one single thing to do with that, at all. Whatsoever.
A little research puts the drink's origins in Boston in 1898, so... yeah.
