OT: Video Games

Submitted by Mineral King on February 4th, 2019 at 5:05 PM

So... my life has changed because of a video game. I am not a big game guy because I usually don’t have the time. I have some free time currently, so... Last week my buddy finally convinced me to play Red Dead Redemption 2. I did not play the original. This game is the greatest game I have ever played by FAR!!! Story, choices, gameplay, free roam and graphics are unreal. I think this is the closest I will get to going to West World, which I want to bad.

2 questions. 1 Have you played RDR2 and what are your thoughts on it? 2. What other game have you played that changed your life?

Isn't it just grand theft auto with cowboys?

My opinion is irrelevant, I still play MUDs and hope the next great MMORPG is actually a good game.

Though, if you like card games, magic the gathering: arena is basically playing magic inside hearthstone. All the polish and the free to play stuff but with an actually quality card game instead of the abomination that is hearthstone.

1. No, but I thoroughly enjoyed RDR1.
2. Very few video games have "changed my life", though plenty have had moments that stuck with me. For the former, I learned plenty of philosophy (none of which was unique to the game) from The Talos Principle.

As far as life changing experiences I don't think anything can touch the change that was ushered in with Mario 64 (and then OOT). Just, mind blowing. Upgrades are too incremental now to get that same drastic change.

I don't know about life changing but Halo 2 and then 3 helped me through many tough times. I started playing Halo 2 split screen in between missions in Iraq. A good portion of my platoon played and we continued online and in the barracks even after we got back. I wasn't a big gamer before that and would consider myself a gamer now because of that. Played many long hours in Halo 3 after it came out.

I'm currently playing LoL, PUBG, and WoW (patiently waiting for Vanilla later this year. Going to be awesome!). All on PC. Going through school and trying nerd out as an adult with kids conflict with each other often.

Loved RDR2. It was a very unproductive couple of weeks for me when it came out.

Other all time favorites are witcher 3 and last of us. Cant wait for last of us 2.

I have played quite a bit of RDR2.  I didn’t play the original, though.  I spend an insane amount of time doing things other than missions and side missions.  I spend an embarrassing amount of time just killing bounty hunters and stacking their bodies in piles by a lake, on a boat, in an outhouse, on a mountain, etc, and then pull out the camera and take selfies.  The key is to get your bounty over $1000 and they will come after you 7-12 at a time and quite frequently. Get about 25 bodies piled up and pose for the camera with a majestic view in the background. It’s the little things in life.

The first Halo was amazing. Loved the original Rock Band and Guitar Hero series. Really enjoyed Skyrim.

My daughter was born 21 months ago and I haven’t turned on my Xbox since.

I'm pretty much only a PC fps player. At 33 I thought my skills would fade cause of work, reflexes and a child but I'm still pretty damn good. If my skills have gone bad I would have started playing more story driven games. I did play rdr2 for a bit but FPS gaming is my love. One day I'll come back to it cause I do think great.

I don't often get to play new video games. I have a very old Dynasty on NCAA 14 and have made a whole bunch of old Michigan teams on there. By now I am surprised nobody has managed to crack open that game and create an online community of modders. Operation Sports keeps rosters coming but EA is progressively less interested every year in maintaining the servers and more times than that you can't download anything because the connection is down.

Outstanding games out there recently.  Aside from RDR2, I'm about 5 hours into the new God of War and its incredible.

The Last of Us is one game that I was truly amazed by.  When I was a kid, it was Ocarina of Time.

Shenmue on Dreamcast changed my perspective on games. Day/night system, open worlds, and so much more interactive than anything before it. A real masterpiece, especially for it's time. Dang thing was 3 GD-ROMs!

Pong, Space Invaders and Missile Command on the original Atari.

Defender in the arcade.

Unreal Tournament at the office.

Call of Duty WWII.

Return to Wolfenstein.

I played the first. Haven’t tried second. Probably won’t anytime soon. I need to beat Sniper Elite 4 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It also doesn’t help that I am addicted to NBA 2K19.

I played both RDR1 and RDR2. Both great games, and I loved RDR2. Great story, Arthur was a phenomenal lead character. Liked him a lot more than John. So much more depth to him, and then Dutch’s descent from charismatic Robin Hood figure with a code of honor to unhinged, paranoid, cold-blooded murderer was a great story in and of itself.

I don’t know that I’ve played video games that have changed my life per se, but video games that have gone above and beyond for me and set the gold standard, in no particular order:

1) Mass Effect 2

2) The Last of Us

3) God of War (newest one in the Norse lands) and God of War III

4) Arkham Knight (right up there with Spider-Man with being the best superhero video game ever)

5) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1

My two favorite video games of all time are M.U.L.E., best game to play with others.  My brother and our friend spent many evenings playing this.  The first and best online experience was the FPS Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

My favorite game is probably The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I've just never had so much freedom in a game. Beautifully designed with just about every detail well thought out.

At the moment I'm playing Smash Bros Ultimate, Red Dead 2 and Detroit Become Human. Although what I'm really waiting (hoping) for is Red Dead 2 on PC. The PC version of GTA V was such a step up from PS4/Xbox One. R* mentions it was built from the ground up and you can really tell by how beautifully it plays. I know Red Dead 1 was never released on PC so I'm just hopeful for 2 at this point.

Man...I absolutely love the Zelda series. I have defeated the original, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. I really want to play Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, but don't own a Nintendo after Gamecube. I'm just so into Xbox now that I have a feeling I will never play another Zelda game again, which is unfortunate. Hopefully I will.

The last good video games I played was before my son was born.  Assassins Creed 2 and the first Red Dead (started, but never finished).

Only video game I've ever played let alone gotten into was Diablo II. Like, GOT into it.  Yea I played Madden and NCAA back in college and Halo and buddies house when it came out. DII was a game changer though and excellent entertainment back in middle/highschool.

I don't know about "life changing", but the Paradox epic strategy games (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron, et al) are pretty damn close.  I have literal weeks of my life sunk into those games.

Game of the year? Doubtful. I think it’s going to be tough to compete with Last of Us 2, but it should be a good one.

I’ve seen some of the early fatality videos and once again, MK finds a way to one-up itself with every new game. The gore just keeps getting more and more intense.

Would love to be one of those game designers. Just sitting around in a board room and thinking of the most gruesome, disgusting ways your characters can kill each other.
