They were just a pretty big band two years ago. I'm not a diehard fan by any means, and I didn't even really start to listen to them until last year, but I had been hearing all the praise from Spin, Uncut, etc. during 2008 and was kind of wondering what the hell the deal was. But if I remember correctly, you graduated that year and the dropoff from college to the real world in music is always difficult.

Also I don't really like this kind of music. I'm more into angry rock. My friend and I decided to share musical tastes one day and we both realized that we were opposite sides of the pole. I like bands like Saosin, Anberlin, Alexisonfire, The Kill, etc. He likes bands like Lady Gaga and pop bs (not that there is anything wrong with it) it's just strictly not my cup of tea.

Haha "angry rock." Awesome. I actually liked Vampire Weekend's first album. . . and also listen to "angry rock," and a whole bunch of other stuff. Everyone's got their own tastes. They're totally different genres, obviously (VW vs. Anberlin, The Kill, etc) but can all be appreciated. Also, I realize how cliche it is to say "I listen to everything." When I ask someone what they like and that's what they say, I immediately must follow up and delve deeper- what bands/songs in the various genres? Anyway, "angry rock"= good for working out, getting pumped up, listening to on the iPod on the way to work; Vampire Weekend= definitely not for working out or getting pumped up; but also good for listening to on the iPod on the way to work, or in the summer months when on a road trip to somewhere warm or a day at the beach.

Cuz it's kind of emo and also very screamy (especially Alexisonfire This could be anywhere in the world). This isn't to say that I don't like softer music some of my favorite songs of all times are Foo Fighters Everlong (acoustic version), some Incubus, Jimmy Eat World, etc. I honestly don't ever see myself listening to anything by Vampire Weekend. It just seems, I don't know how to describe it. I know what I like and this... I do not like. Again though to each their own. I'm sure many would say the same about the music that I like to listen to. That's what I enjoy so much about the arts is that it speaks to different people in different ways and that no two people will interpret a song, a painting etc in the same way. I just wish I was a more creative person because while I can appreciate art/the arts I'm terrible at it.

Someone must not like you because you keep getting negged. What did you think of Thrice's newest album, Beggars. I thought it was good, but really different from The Illusion of Safety or Identity Crisis. I think the progression in their sound just shows you how talented they are as musicians.

VW is a polarizing band - I did listen to the stream of the album over NPR - some of the tracks were huge earworms - which was also a surprise. Some of the reviews of the album were interesting - there were several reviews of the sort that "these damn snotty Ivy League rich kids have ruined African music for me." I thought that was a wee bit florid. They're certainly unique, which is rare.

i love indie music and VW was suggested to me by both iTunes and Last.fm, but i just find them to be relatively bland and generic for the most part. i do like the song that was on Stepbrothers, though.

I believe they came before the whole vampire craze, however, Twilight was published in 2005, while Vampire Weekend was formed in 2006. However, the name came from Ezra Koenig's (the lead singer) student film of the same name. The protagonist, Walcott, is on vacation when suddenly, vampires begin to take over the world. Walcott has to go to Cape Cod and tell the mayor about the vampires. In fact, they have a song called 'Walcott' on their first album and it explains the plot.

Divisive band. Their eponymous first album was a great listen, and I still find myself playing "A-Punk," "Boston," and "Oxford Comma," on sunny days in A2. Their latest offering was leaked (well, not really, as every song was uploaded on their page about a week ago), so I've had just a little time to digest it. Songs like Horchata and Cousins have been out for a while, but they don't necessarily encapsulate the feel of the album. If you have even the slightest interest in the band, I'd have you check out "White Sky," "Taxi Cab," or "Giving up the Gun." I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

VW is good in the sense that they keep their sound extremely simple and straight forward. But keep in mind that a 2nd album (haven't heard it yet) needs to contrast enough from the 1st to keep them fresh and innovative. There lies the success or failure of said band. With that said, I like Discovery better and wish Rostam Batmanglij would devote more time to it.

Heard it the other day on Sirius, but computer problems have prevented me from purchasing it and giving it another listen. But, I was impressed with what I heard. Also, IMO, MGMT is the consumate college band at the moment.
