OT: Unpopular opinions and guilty pleasures, Music edition.

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

From past music topics on the blog, it's clear the mgocommunity has good taste in music. Now I want to talk about your not too popular opinions on music. Guilty pleasures edition, and those artists you like but bury in your playlists and don't necessarily make public. I'll start.

I like earlier Radiohead when they embraced melody and traditional song construction more than current Radiohead.

I love the first Boston album.

I dismiss Journey except when any of several songs pop up.

Come on Eileen is awesome.

Have at it.

I dismiss out of hand anyone whose favorite Beatles album is the White Album.

John was the greatest of the Beatles.

Dani California is the best RHCP song.

Stevie Nicks' live version of Landslide is terrible compared to the studio version.

I listened to Led Zeppelin more in the 1980s than in all the decades since combined.

Guilty pleasure song:  "No Release" by Rainbow.  Fabulous guitar opening.

Greatest live band of all time. What they just did at MSG was unrivaled in music history.

13 shows(26 sets of music) in the most iconic venue in America over only 17 days. Not one song repeated over that span. Was like watching my favorite team win a championship.

Hmmm, how about this - 100 years from now, no music from the past 10 years will still be played (except Adele,) but classic rock will still be around.

Bullshit. Go listen to the punch brothers, arcade fire, LCD Soundsystem, daft punk's most recent album, white denim. I know old people love talking about when they were young and how everything was better. Music is harder to find these days, there is a lot more of it and the good stuff isn't on the radio. But there is dynamite music that will stand the test of time still being made. Edit: throw in Andrew bird.

was released in 1987 and Tom Sawyer by Rush was released in 1981. Many of Iron Maiden and Metallica's seminal hits were released in the 80s (or do you not include heavy metal in the rock genre?) So I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. (but that's the whole point of the thread, so congrats, I guess.)

I think "Bohemian Rhapsody" is overrated and sucks and I think "American Pie" is just garbage.  Neil Young sucks too.  His voice sounds like a dying cat trying to sing.

Rhapsody overrated?  Um, maybe.

American Pie garbage?  Too strong. Sure, played to death over the decades (every time the DJ needed to go to the can and grab a cup of coffee), but not bad enough to qualify for the garbage pile.

Neil Young = dying cat?  Oh, hell yes. Painful voice - like Shove-an-icepick-into-your-ear painful.

I'm not too ashamed to admit that despite all their cheesy, overly-dramatic lyrics and themes, Queensryche can still ring my bell.

I saw Riverdance live at the Fisher Theater back in the day and LOVED it.

Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire is one of my all-time favorites.

- The drum fill from "In the air tonight" is alright, but in all actuality, "Easy Lover" represents the zenith of Phil Collins' legacy.  On a related note, to me, Earth Wind and Fire shouldn't be anywhere near a guilty pleasure thread - it's universally acknowledged that they're tighter than a nun's keister and hotter than Danerys Targaryen's pets.

- Don't even care about Lady Gaga's aversion to pants: she's legitimately talented and while her last few albums haven't been as impactful as her first 2.5, 'Bad Romance' is a near perfect electronic pop composition that's got a ton of interesting things going on and stands up to repeated listens.

is a touch overrated and the personality cult around him is pretty bizarre.

The Beach Boys made some very good music, and Pet Sounds is a phenomenal album. However, the man lost his mind (and voice) soon thereafter and very little of note came out of the decades thereafter. He's still touring, heck all the surviving Beach Boys are still touring and it's sad because they're all shadows of what they used to be.

Unpopular opinions- can't stand Eddie Vedder, Kid Rock Music or most anything Auto-tone. Guilty pleasures- 40's Junction on Serius , Shabba Ranks and a lot of random Regee other than Bob Marley, a lot of 80s music I didn't accept back in the day sounds a little better now a days. Get the fuck off my lawn, nothing to see here!

The Beatles are far and away my favorite band/artist and I'm 19. All these frat bros are blasting Brocolli and I'm just wondering what the hell is happening and why.
