OT: Unique Brissett II's Unique Approach to Recruitment

Submitted by UMgradMSUdad on

The headlines still exist, but a lot of the stories posted by various sports blogs regarding  Unique Brissett II's recruitment have since been deleted or locked, and with good reason: most, if not all, of the information about him seems to be fake.  Here is one story about him that had not yet been deleted:

Michigan State recruiting has made the cut for top JUCO wide receiver transfer Unique Brissett II from Troy, N.Y.

There aren’t many spots to fill in Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class, but there is one guy who could still be added. Unranked, surprisingly, JUCO transfer Unique Brissett II from New York recently named Michigan State in his trimmed list of schools.

Brissett has narrowed his list from 14 to five in the past few days and the Spartans have remained a constant. Michigan State made his most recent top five, released on Sunday.

Moreover, the speedy receiver/athlete is visiting Michigan State on Monday afternoon, which could give the Spartans a major leg up when he decides by June 9. He plans to visit rival Michigan on May 24. Miami, Maryland and Kentucky are also getting visits before his decision date.

The Spartans extended an offer on May 19 and instantly became one of the favorites to land the JUCO transfer from New York. He has been blowing up on the recruiting trail lately and was even offered by Alabama on Sunday.

It’s easy to see why he’s getting so many new looks. Just check out his highlights:

And the linked highlight is tape of another player, not Unique Brissett II.  He has no offers from anybody, certainly not Michigan or Alabama.  Hell, at this point, I'm not sure Unique Brissett II even exists.  He (or whoever is pushing this fake news) sure fooled some of the fans and sports blogs (at least temporarily) at University of Kentucky, Miami University, and Michigan State University though.

Sean Scherer, MSU's 247 guy, even gave a confirmation at one point that Brissett was on campus. Safe to say he's not the most respected guy on the network.

The biggest problem that Crouton writers face is that like some outlets in non-sports news, they try to focus on being FIRST over being right. Prime example of that behind the Green Wall (TM) is Hondo spewing bullshit and hoping it sticks. I think Brissett is just another example of how maybe, just maybe, we focus a little too much on recruiting, and how in May, you really need to vet your sources for CFB news.

Throw in a good measure of The Secret of My Success, with Michael J Fox, and a dollop of Captain Tuttle from MASH. This guy could become the most sought after prospect in the nation, all without anyone ever actually meeting him...

Just another example why everything on 247 needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Offers and visits are self reported by the recruits. Just because it says they have a Bama offer doesn't mean they do. It is an NCAA violation for the schools to publicly comment on a recruit. This isn't the first faux recruitment to occur.

Also, few things would make me happier than if this turned out to be the ultimate troll job on Dantonio by Scott Bell or Ant Wright.

Lorenz works his ass off to verify information from third parties and has legitimate sources. I believe he monitors closely who has offers. He called this out quickly.

Scherer on the other hand has no credibility with a RCMB board willing to buy and shred of positive news whether it's true or not.

The 247 boards operate independently. That leads to some good sites and some RCMB.
