OT: UM prof arrested for seeking sex w/14-year-old

Submitted by NoVaWolverine on

While Jeff Moss is trying to make something out of nothing w/Harbaugh and Exposure U., someone else connected with U-M has apparently been up to something actually illegal and sickening:

A 51-year-old University of Michigan professor was the subject of a two-year federal investigation that resulted in his arrest at a south Florida hotel where he thought he was going to have sex with a 14-year-old boy, records show.

James Cavalcoli had corresponded with a police officer posing as the fictitious 14-year-old boy's father since November 2013 before attempting to meet the boy for sex Friday at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Florida.

Cavolcoli admitted to law enforcement officials waiting for him in the lobby he came to Florida from his home in Ann Arbor partly for the boy, but also for work. Cavolcoli is an assistant professor of biology and the director of the Bioinformatics Core.

"Mr. Cavalcoli has worked for the university for about 13 years," U-M spokeswoman Mary Masson said in an emailed statement. "We are currently reviewing the matter and will cooperate fully with law enforcement investigators."

A federal complaint was filed Monday against Cavalcoli for one count of traveling across state lines for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with another person. He remains in federal custody, records show.

Assuming he's convicted, I hope they throw the book at the guy.

EDIT: Per some suggestions in the comments, I've labeled this off-topic. I realize it's not the most pleasant thing to post on the board, but it does involve the university so I figured it might be of some interest. Just a reminder that this sick exploitation of kids is happening all around us, and no institution is immune from having someone like this in its ranks.

there are thousands of employees and Michigan isn't going to know everything each and every one of them is doing. This has nothing to do with Michigan other than he happens to work there and it makes for bigger headlines.

Since he admitted he planned to see this kid, I will say he's one sick fuck.

I can understand not wanting to see this stuff here, but we're all here because of our connection to the University.  This horrific person doesn't make us guilty by association but to the extent that we care what happens within the U-M community, good or bad, this is a relevant thing to post.

Anything related to the university is relevant to this board? I don't think so. I think it is just those sensational media stories related to the university that you would consider relevant here. Or do you want to see a post for everyone who steals a phone from a dorm room and every MIP issued at a house party? This is here because it is gross and scandalous.

Police blotter. Are we back to scanning the crime report for michigan employees or students who violate the law? Let's keep circulating stories of bad apples related to the university so we can rally around our public disgust of them!!! That will prove we are good people! Of course, we could just keep the talk to entertainment news (I.e. Sports).....

I don't really know anything about frat moms. I think old movies referenced them. I guess I have no opinion. Of course, if it means that frays are either more entitled or privileged than others, then I think we are bound to hear some grousing about it.

I know there isn't a ton of news out right now, but this still seems like a troll post.

I guess this is par for the course during Fall practice though.

I'm not sure why, but I just don't think this is story is a good post for this blog.  I understand its relevance to the readership, but not sure that relevance alone is sufficient justification for posting it. I think the membership and opinions that make this a great sports blog aren't necessarily the kind that would make this a good site for socio-political-current events discussions.

Cant we keep the topics on this board to sports? The world is a very unpleasant place and we are BOMBARDED by these kinda of stories on a daily basis..It gerts depressing...Im not saying stick our heads in the sand but there are PLENTY of other places for this to be discussed..This is a place to escape all that for a few brfief moments....

sports discussed on the blog then you need to be consistent.  Where is your outrage for the Friday night drinking thread?  The talking cars thread etc.  get over yourself......that said I am sickened by the story itself, not that it was posted.

It won't be long before we start to hear it's ok for this type of relationship to happen from the same people who brought us gay marriage. It's deeply rooted in the history of the gay life style and has a very long history in gay culture. I am not making a judgement but just an observation knowing the history of it. I am not gay but have spoken to gay men about it for a research project on a different matter. There is a reason why many gay men in the US travel to certain Asian countries and it's not for the food.
