OT: Trolling Chelsea fans!
Haven't had a good, solid soccer post in a while....
Today's result -- Leicester 2, Chelsea 1 -- pretty much creates two of the most amazing one-season turn-arounds in major sports history, and in the same league at the same time, encapsulated in one game.
Mighty Chelsea: Won the BPL last year in a run-away, 12 points clear or something, wrapped up the title 4 games before end of the year. Brought back basically ALL the same players and coach. And... now they SUCK. Particularly their defense (defence) is dreadful. Are only 1 point above relegation. Their next game, with Sunderland, is oddly an early battle not to be in the relegation zone. This is a team owned by a multibillionaire, they buy expensive players like fish breathe water...and they have gone from the best to almost worst, inexplicably.
And little Leicester: Two years ago you'd never heard of them, they were in the lower divisions. They got promoted last year and did ok for themselves. But this year, they are LEADING the league -- "top of the table" -- and have beaten several of the heavyweights. Their best player, Vardy, has set a record scoring (goals or assist) in 14 straight BPL games, he scored goals in 11 straight, he is absolutely going to get a huuuuge $$$ contract offer from Barca or Real or Man U this summer. They score 2, 3, 4 goals a game... their defense (defence) is pretty shaky, but when you score as much as they do, who needs it. So they have gone from nobodies to leading the league. Everyone keeps waiting for the wheels to fall off, and maybe they will; but today's result shows, they are still the quality of the league.
(Then there's the Gunners' fans, FINALLY you have a team capable of winning... and now you're chasing Leicester. Somehow, it's always about Arsenal's frustrations, isn't it?)

I know nothing about soccer, but I can always appreciate a good underdog story.

I do also....

come from behind underdog win. Unless of course its against UM. When I meet Robby or Bobby Bosco I am going to tell him I know he was faking that ankle injury, But boy howdy Brent Mushburger bought it and played it like a fiddle through that second half. I was wondering if he was going to offer him a ride to the hospital.
Personally, Brent and our pass rush was making me so sick I was hoplng Michigan would break his other ankle. But like I said our pass rush had me prepped for some projectile vomiting....... Twas a long time ago and I still cringe when I hear someone mention that game. We wooped it up on BYU fhis past year and my Dr said it went a long way in healing me.....

I don't know much either, but I can appreciate a team with no history with a bunch of bandwagon fans getting good by spending shit tons of money going down in flames.

LFC is up to its usual despite changing managers midseason: bumbling around, drawing almost every game, blowing games in ridiculous ways, and putting loads of players on the injured list. It was fun to watch them beat the snot out of City, though.
Mourinho at Man U might be fun for the off-field entertainment value. On the field it would probably be about the same as Van Gaal.
December 14th, 2015 at 7:31 PM ^
I could see it working out early for United. Mourinho is like the Jim Harbaugh of the premier league at least for the way the media portrays him in that he wears out his welcome. Though obviously its not true for Jimmy.

or English Premier League. That is the wealthiest soccer/football league in the world. Chelsea--the original one--is a wealthy suburb of London.Leicester is located in the Midlands region of England.

Cliffs: Rich team loses, poor team wins and their best player will sign with rich team next year.

Yep, that's why it is difficult to have too much fun with league standings - the same 4-5 teams (or in Spain the same 2-3, or in Germany the same 1-2) always stay at the top over time. You have the 1 year wonders and then those "assets" are sold off to the highest bidder. Which are the same old clubs.
Wish it could be more like U.S. sports where small market teams can actually keep their teams together for a sustained period. There is no Kansas City Royals extended run in European soccer leagues nowadays.
I really don't know how fans of the other 40ish non "top" German, Spanish, English clubs do it year after year knowing their ceiling is anywhere from 4th best to 6th best depending on league 95% of their history.
As for Chelsea I read Mourinho has some ridiculous buyout that he only gets if he is fired so maybe he is tanking on purpose! It makes Les Miles buyout look petty! 37M POUNDS.

I was in London at a pub last week; someone quickly identified me as an American (maybe my accent?) and wanted to know if I was a (NY) Giants fan. I replied that I wasn't into pro football, but followed my college team. They then asked me which Premier Club I followed (why?), and I said I wasn't familiar with all of the teams, but I liked the name "Hotspur." I was then treated to a stream of anti-semitic invective....strange.

The last time a team outside of Chelsea/United/City/Arsenal won the Premier League... Blackburn in 1995.
Even mighty mighty Liverpool hasn't won since 1990. When it wasn't even yet called the Premier League.
December 14th, 2015 at 7:37 PM ^
Wow that's surprising. The point remains in England almost every game is close whereas in Spain or Germany, its Bayern, Real Madrid or Barca winning by 5 every game
December 14th, 2015 at 7:43 PM ^
The goal differential stats prove this. Last season the GD of the champion in la liga was Barcelona with +89, in the premier league its Chelsea with 41. Both playing 38 games
December 14th, 2015 at 8:16 PM ^
Barcelona dominated La Liga more than Chelsea dominated the Prem last year, sure. Well, maybe. Barcelona won the league by 2 points over Real. Chelsea won the league by 8 points over City (and I think they had even locked it up well before then too).
But some (most?) of the goal differential is also playing styles. Barcelona keeps attacking and pressing, even when up big. Chelsea under Mourinho would park the bus after going up by a goal or two. So, all things equal, Barcelona's goal difference will generally be higher.

There is no KC Royals extended run in European soccer leagues nowadays.
There is also no Leicester City run in any American sports league either. The Toledo Mud Hens won't be promoted to the big leagues anytime soon.
Not to mention that small market teams do just fine. To use Germany last year as an example:
- Wolfsburg (pop. 120,000) finished second
- Moenchengladbach (pop. 250,000) finished third
- Leverkusen (pop. 160,000) finished fourth
- Augsburg (pop. 280,000, and only promoted to Bundesliga in 2011) finished fifth
Compare that to the rubbish teams playing in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Duesseldorf...
December 14th, 2015 at 8:58 PM ^
Both of them have the financial muscle of Volkswagen and Bayer respectively backing them. It'll be the same when RB Leipzig finally make it up (and then hopefully drop with Hoffenheim).
Now if Darmstadt manage to stay up after this year, that will be incredibly impressive given their recent (last three years) history.

Bournemouth beating ManU was also cool this weekend. If you havent researched Bournemouth's ascension it is truly an amazing story how they have risen from the ashes and how quickly they have risen thru the ranks. This was a club that was 1 goal away from dissolving less than a decade ago!
December 14th, 2015 at 7:21 PM ^
They are a very small market team. They knocked off Man U in front of 11,000 fans, That's it. 11,000.
The Big House holds 11,000 . . . plus another 100,000.
But they were 11,000 very passionate fans.
December 14th, 2015 at 7:29 PM ^
11,000 is all their ground holds. They are the smallest club to ever compete in the EPL just edging out Blackpool who used temporary seats to hit 16,000

I know exactly jack-shit about professional soccer. That said, I now have a favorite player. Vardy....rhymes with farty and with party....both typically very funny events.

Chelsea have issues of their own in the locker room. They players are acting like dickheads.. Believe Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, and Courtouis were the only ones to walk over and applaud the away support after the match..
Still in play for the Champions League this year and STILL THE ONLY TEAM IN LONDON WITH A EUROPEAN CUP!
..but it's Chelsea so let's talk shit, right???
