Really, Betemit?
October 4th, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
sets new mlb record for swinging at balls in the dirt.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:52 PM ^
More like record for further average distance between bat and ball on a swing. He wasn't within two feet on some of those swings.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
Avila, Betemit, Jackson - what a murderer's row! At least we get them out of the way to start the 8th.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:55 PM ^
In all fairness, Jackson has had a decent series
October 4th, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
One hit.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
And four walks. .308 OBP. Not crazy, but he's having productive ABs. He is definitely not in the 0-3 3Ks range that Betemit is in.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
I can't recall him swinging at one bad pitch in the series. That's more than we can say about these other hackers tonight.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:56 PM ^
Let's hope it is still a 3 run game....ain't looking good.
October 4th, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
Alex Avila and Betemit are playing horrible...... Rafeal Soriano should not get us a 1 2 3 inning
October 4th, 2011 at 10:56 PM ^
Not enough is being made of these awful ABs coming against A.J. F'ing Burnett.
This is a choke. Plain and simple.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:00 PM ^
Do you convienently only have nights off that the Tigers are losing? It's weird, because when they won 12 straight you must have been pulling 16 hour days or something and unable to post on MGoBlog. Yet, whenever they're losing it seems you get free time.
Stop throwing things out like "Choke." The series isn't over. Even if this game is the Tigers have a significant pitching advantage in game 5.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:05 PM ^
Yikes! Let's pull it together guys...
(Ed: Not meant to be a reply to your comment)
October 4th, 2011 at 11:05 PM ^
Who's pitching game 5? Is it back to Nova v Fister? If so I don't there's anyway the Tigers have the advantage, after seeing game 1.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
This may not be a choke, but it does qualify as "laying an egg". Either way, it was a terrible performance by the Tigers.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:19 PM ^
If this isn't a choke, what is? They faced a bad pitcher and made him work for nothing.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
Did you WATCH the 2nd-5th innings? For whatever you think of Burnett (I think he's a headcase with the psyche of a puppy in a thunderstorm), he had great command and really good stuff.
Chump or not, Burnett showed up today.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:09 PM ^
Who gets in a good mood while watching an exciting, captivating game (like I was last night) and says "Hey, this is great! I'm so high I'm going to jump on my computer and post things like 'Woooooh!' to strangers!"
It's called venting. Welcome to the Internet.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
It seems like every kind of break has gone the Yankees' way tonight.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:06 PM ^
Never thought I'd be saying this, but where is Inge? Wilson Betemit has been awful at the plate and in the field tonight.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:06 PM ^
DAMNIT LEYLAND Y U PUT PITCHERS OUT THERE WHO GIVE UP HITS AND Y U PUT HITTERS OUT THERE WHO GET OUT.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
If we fired Leyland two years ago it STILL wouldn't be soon enough for me. What a terrible manager to waste another opportunity like this. Hopefully game five has a much better outcome...
October 4th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
More times than not, the team has taken on his personality in high-pressure situations. The man figets, paces and runs his hand through his hair when things get tight. Not really surprising for a nicotine junkie when the only waking three hour stretch he has in a day without a cancer stick in his mouth is also the most stressful.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
The team played tight because the manager smokes?
Take THAT, Occam...
October 4th, 2011 at 11:13 PM ^
What, pray tell, would you have done differently?
October 4th, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
it's obvious that tiger mgt is horrible on and off the field. i mean, they have half the salary as the yankees, yet are one game away from ousting them. and their payroll is smaller than the chisox and even the twinkies. i can't understand how they won the division with such incompetence.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:35 PM ^
It's obvious what Leyland should have done today: he should have pitched Brad Penny and started Brandon Inge at 3rd. After all, Porcello and Betemit struggled. When will these dumbasses listen to the cries of the fans? We've been begging for Inge and Penny all season...
October 5th, 2011 at 12:42 AM ^
Not that he should be fired, but was pretty bad. A. The lineup was terrible. I get playing Kelly as a lefty against Burnett, but I'd rather have had Maggs in there against a shaky pitcher. Plus separating Jhonny from Vmart without Maggs in seems silly. Jackson was ok tonight, but I don't get why we don't have Santiago, Young, Miggy, VMart, Maggs, Jhonny, Jackson, Avila, 3rd baseman. That seems to have a better chance of turning over.
B. Not putting Inge in for defense after Betimit's 3rd strikeout was horrible in my opinion. Not getting to that ball blew the game open.
C. When Jackson gets on base against Burnett, I don't know why you don't steal with him every time. Burnett lets things get to him. Let him try to steal without Santiago swinging first pitch.
Nova seemed inconsistent and a little wild in Game 1, if we're patient we can get to him. We're gonna need 5. Unless, of course, it rains and we play on Friday.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
Boy Fister will need to pitch a great game on Thursday because there is no help in our bullpen.

I remember him being on the Yankees and being terrified anytime he came in. Looks like he is still up to his old tricks.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
I'm feeling it.

Glad to have an effect.
I restate it. When the Tigers win, I'm in a good mood. When I'm in a good mood, posting on the internet is usually not real high on my priority list.

hey, at least a local boy is pitching well tonite for AZ.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
...pretty much proves my point that everyone involved in trading CGrand to NY is an idiot that should be fired.

October 4th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
grandy was set to become a free agent and is north of 30. he is now making $13million which kicks to $15million. edwin jackson also free agent bound making over $8 million. we rec'd 4 players who combined made about $2M. That $20M will be put to good use this offseason. plus, jackson is 24 and a better CF and had arguable a better offensive year last year. i don't remember hearing complaints last year.
that said, i'm happy for the year grandy is having. just hope it ends thursday.

So is Scherzer the first reliever in Game 5? Thinking back to that weird split game with Fister and Scherzer, I have to expect if Fister can't get to the seventh that Scherzer will come in the game.
October 4th, 2011 at 11:57 PM ^
benoit in the 8th and papa grande in the 9th to close it out.
but if fister gets in deep trouble (which he won't), verlander would be my first guy up.
October 5th, 2011 at 9:24 AM ^
I said if Fister can't get to through hte seventh we may see Scherzer. Obviously if he gets through the eighth we are looking at Benoit then Valverde.
