OT - Tigers/Nationals matinee and MLB Trade Deadline open thread

First pitch 1:08, Verlander vs. Gio Gonzalez.  I'm desparately hoping this is the start where JV looks like JV again and strikes out more than 5 guys for the first time in a month.

With the tire fire that the Nats have become, they look even more foolish for shutting down Strasburg super early last year.  The playoffs don't come around all that often and for this Nats team it might be a while until they are back in the picture.  Wonder if they'd do it all over again if given the chance....

Yeah, I think it's a tough call to make, but I still think it was a decision that will pay off more in the long term. Keep in mind, at this time last year, Strasburg still hadn't completed a full season in the majors, and had thrown just 48 innings in all of 2011.

Despite their performance this year, you've still got to feel confident in the strong young core they've built for this team. You've got Strasburg anchoring the rotation, Harper, Desmond, Ramos, and Rendon are all exciting young players, and you've got Jordan Zimmerman and Taylor Jordan, two more promising young pitchers, to bolster the rotation. I think they're in good shape long-term.

...but aren't they a kind of a young team?  With a lot of hype coming into this year, frankly, I'm not surprised that they are suffering a bit of a "sophmore slump" so to speak.

The Tigers clearly seem to be the superior team so it might not be a bad thing if the Indians keep a little pressure on for the rest of the season.  With a soft schedule left that might even push the Tigers to the best record in the league.  I wouldn't necessarily mind Cleveland snagging a wild card spot either.

There's a big four game series between the Indians and Tigers next week in Cleveland.  Depending on how that goes, I think, we'll have a pretty good idea of how real the threat is.
